This is, by far, the best video on RU-vid discussing and demonstrating impedance mismatch for guitarists using audio interfaces. What's most telling if you use the wrong input type is the dramatic reduction and change in characteristics of the high frequency range, particularly since it can't really be compensated for. I really wish plugin developers would provide reference information & reference patches, including audio soundbites, so that we can confirm all is well on this front when setting up the plugin for the first time.

Awesome compare! Very easy to understand! Just to mention what really happends when you plug a High Impedance instrument into a Low Impedance Input as you mention is not only in low gain volume (that can be compensated ) but also an undesirable "filtered sound" due impedance mismatch ( High frequences are more affected than lower, so thats why sounds like narrow)

Nice video, one criticism: It's a lot easier to compare sounds if you cut them together with no break in the middle. In the visual domain this is called "change blindness", but you get the same effect when a comparison is interrupted in audio.

Very, very glad someone is covering this. Back when I got my first interface I was running guits at mic level, not instrument level. Very sort of muffly top end, certainly not clipping digitally which was nice, but wow. Fixed my mistake and it was like taking the earmuffs off my pickups. Chimy and loud and great. Cheers

Very good... On the high impedance it sounded kind of overdriven to me, on low importance at low gain in souded a lot warmer but then when the gain was turned up on low importance to match it it sounded overdriven but a bit less harsh. I prefer it through the Roland with the gain turned up personally

Hi! I just sort of want to clarify why this is happening. When the guitar's output signal is being run into the rear (Low-Z) input on the interface as opposed to the front (Hi-Z/instrument) input, ONLY TWO THINGS are actually changing: 1.) the level at which the DAW receives the signal, and 2.) there is some high frequency roll-off. The overdrive effect you're hearing more of in the Hi-Z/instrument input is only a consequence of that signal being received by the amp-sim as slightly louder, i.e. there is more DRIVE going into the amp-sim. Notice how when Gabor turns up the gain on the interface, the overdrive effect increases. The only change in timbral quality is the aforementioned high frequency roll-off. This is just a consequence of the physical aspects of impedance, which is a whole other can of worms to dive into. Have you ever seen on like a Scarlett 2i2, the inputs have a switch on them that says "Line/Inst"? The reason for this is that line-level signals are low-impedance and thus come into the interface LOUDER, while instruments typically output a fraction of that level. If you get the chance to use something that has a switch like that, flip back and forth between the two settings and you'll be able to hear what I'm talking about! You can think of it almost as if the interface is compensating for these differences in levels :)
@FrankNitsch
@FrankNitsch 2 года назад
What you are demonstrating in the beginning of the video is of course right. The difference between a high impedance (Hi-Z) instrument input and a microphone input is however much bigger than the Hi-Z compared to a line level input. But you are adding another factor by extending the length of the guitar cable by the XLR cable from your patch bay to the rear of your audio interface. Just by adding a few meters of cable between a passive guitar and the input of a preamp you're changing the sound significantly. You should have plugged the guitar cable into the read input using a short adapter instead... But as I said: that doesn't change the main conclusion that you should use a high impedance input for passive instruments. For active guitars and bass guitars (with batteries inside) this is not an issue however...

It makes me laugh how many musicians/guitarist expect a pedal or piece of gear to sound the same as someone else they’ve heard, obviously everyone has very different gear/rigs (guitars/amps/pedals etc) with very different characteristics so it’s very unlikely it will sound how you expected or wanted it to from the off, you can’t just plug and expect awesomeness with most things, you have spend at least a bit of time editing & producing your desired sound/tone, to me that’s one of my favourite parts as you can learn so much and much more about the gear you use. Another informative video for people who may need it, cheers

The other thing I see so much from other musicians especially when trying to record they have input levels maxed out, FX levels / inputs / gain / drive etc on full and wonder why it sounds crap or not like they heard somewhere else. Also as I work as I sound technician at a rehearsal / recording studio and play in a band in Manchester, England, the amount of bands I hear that when they start to play in rehearsal basically have everything maxed out and levels so fucking high! Guitarists obviously the worst for this! With my band we start at a pretty low level and then work up to slightly higher level as we play a few songs and to me the great thing about working this way our songs sound so much better dynamically when we build up for choruses / solos / crescendos / endings etc, or when we want to play softer it sounds much better, plus being the lead singer & guitarist in the band working like this really helps me vocally to sing well & in tune and not straining and trying to sing to loud all the time and then vox ends up sounding Shite! I’ve learnt to let the microphones do more of the work when needed instead of shouting or turning guitars etc up to No.11, on my guitar amps now I rarely go above 4 or 5 as that’s their sweet spot and sound great and if I sometimes need to be louder then I’ll mic up the guitar amps and bass amp, this works a treat for me and my band dynamically so everything nowadays is crystal clear and it doesn’t end up being a battle of the guitars against each other and then against the bass and drums and it all becomes a huge too loud mish mashed distorted mess!! But it did take quite along time for myself and the rest of the band to realise starting quieter and building to your desired levels as you go works much better.

I think the sound of the front JFET input sounded best. It has a lot to do with impediance. It's the same with microphones. How they match each other, The input impediance of the preamp and the in-going impediance of the signal. I remember when I asked a question at Gearslutz. -Is it possible to build a box in which I can adjust the impediance input level before it reaches the input of a preamp. Line or mic level? -With a multi winded transformer? Switchable? Well, I didn't get a full answer then. I guess it is more compicated than I thought it would be.Or? That would be a great box. Beacuse with such a thing you could be able to alter the sound in many ways.

Having pretty much all Amp Sims you can think of [Amp4, Amp5, Native, etc] this is one of those "Got To Know This" vids. But there are other things to consider as well: Processing Power, Streaming alocation, etc. Some amp sims produce digital cliping even when using low-impedence due to PC specs. After building a PC that is completely dedicated to audio I noticed quite a change in their behaviour, though in some cases the digital cliping still occurs on high gain amps and pedals [love Muffs, but can't make the ones on Amp4/5 and Native work at all with all the digital clipping they produce]. That said, Amplitube is still my favorite Amp Sim for clean and Bass. Not so fond of the effects though. And the Leslies on Amp5 are yumm-yumm delicious.

Thanks for the video, I just bought this audio interface and noticed that I've had pretty low levels when recording my external digital piano through the mic/line inputs, I'm talking about 1/3 of the line level that I've got on my previous saffire souncard. To have a correct level I had to crank the gain knob too much, thus adding unwanted noise, do you think it is a conscient choice made by the manufacturer ? I tried the DI inputs that can sound great, but sometimes I don't wanna have that colour on what I'm recording.

Hi, very informative review. Kudos. I have a question regarding impedance with headphones. I set my eyes on iD14MKII and just learned that it has pretty high headphone-out impedance of 20 Ohms. I have Beyerdynamic DT-700 Pro X headphones with 48 Ohms impedance so would iD14MKII impose any distortion or any kind of problems when paired with DT700 Pro X. The iD14MKII manual says this: "The headphone output can comfortably drive a wide range of headphone impedances meaning that you will get great sounding audio no matter what model of headphones you have" Thank you in advance.

HI, I use Amplitude 5 as my AMp sim and am running a U-Phoria UMC404HD audio interface with the MiDas Pre-Amps. As far as I can tell, all 4 inputs are the same impedence type. I typically run on INstrument Level with the PAD engaged so I can crank the preamp. However, is it better to not use the Pad. Yes, I am A/B testing it but curious to hear what others do without a separate DI and this interface. Thanks!

Any recommendations? I am using Cubase AI and Amplitube Custom Shop (only for the Leslies).

I'm not a Cubase or Amplitube Sim user myself, but have you tried recording into a stereo track and running the insert on that? Maybe the amp sim will just register it as a mono signal and output accordingly. I'd definitely try that out, but keep in mind you may have to compensate on the amp sim's output by +6dB to combat volume loss due to mono summation

I havent quite understood what is exactly in the signal chain when you connect the guitar to the patch bay? In both cases (batch bay and PRO DI) it ends up in the mic level input of the audio card so I guess in both cases there is impedance matching. Does the patch bay converts the signal to microphone level as well but in a different way that the Radial Pro DI does?

Do you ever compress or limit guitar DIs? I'm in the middle of mixing a metal song with guitar DI I recorded. I just checked it against some DIs recorded by August Burns Red for one of the Nail The Mix sessions, and it looks markedly different to me. Almost looks as if it's been compressed or limited... much less dynamic range, no way higher peaks when hitting chords. Is it common to limit peaks on DIs like this? I've always been taught to never record so hot that the signal clips, and also that the input going into an amp sim should not reach the red. Now I'm wondering if I should lower the gain on the hard-hitting chord parts, or just push the amp sim harder so that it sounds good throughout but goes red for some of the hard-hitting chord parts?

Depending on active or passive guitar...easy to fix, buy a DI pedal/box , for active guitar passive DI as already low impedence...if passive guitar you will need an active DI with input buffer for your pedals to run at low impedence, then preamp/DI pedal with XLR .....you don't lose your top end & clarity liked you showed along with underpowered signal...helps bass players to...more gain, clarity, bottom end tightness etc...your Radial is a good DI...Noble if you can afford it & the 6 month wait but worth it if you've got the money as fantastic DI box for guitars/bass's/keyboards etc etc...

Only Pre EQ-ing and Post EQ-ing will make your sound better if you have cheap gears. Also check your electricity is whether grounded or not. And of course you need to adjust sample rate and buffer size for your DAW and use the right driver as well for PC. I have focusrite 2i2 solo 2nd gen with default focusrite driver. Sound really terrible using every amp sim plugins which already have IR. I tried change default focusrite driver to ASIO4all because recording or playback keeps crushing the DAW with focusrite driver. With that I solved the DAW crushing problem. Another problem might be EMI or EMF problem if your studio is not constructed by professional. DI box is for to keep dry signal of your guitar while you record with your effect paddles which can give you wide options like blending with amp sim to sound advance. Most interface include thier own DI. You may not need it.

Hello friend. I also have focusrite scarlett solo 2nd gen and pretty much every plugin sounds crap. I thought something is wrong with the focusrite so I purchased expensive Babyface Pro FS. But I get same crap results. I thought the problem might be in grounding in my apartment as it's an old apartment. So I dug up 25 feets and inserted a pure copper rod into earth and connected only my computer to this grounding rod so that no other device/appliance can interfere with the ground loop issue. Only my PC is connected to this grounding rod and nothing else. Also the PC is not connected it to any other equipment so as to avoid ground loop. Result is still the same crap sound. I thought something might be wrong with electricity, so I purchased a Online UPS which basically gives a constant pure output electricity signal. But yet, still the same crap sound. Finally I thought to try a different PC. So I purchased a new windows 11 laptop. Yet he same crap sound. It sounds the same on any interface, PC. Muddy, dead and very weird. I'm out of options now. Not sure what's wrong. Were you able to figure out your issue?

Almost everyone record everything with 44.1 kHz. But they mix and master with 48 kHz or above. At first my DSP sound really crappy while listening my playback with 44 khz. Then I switch to 48 kHz and sound become a little bit better. But it give more latency which recording. But you can record with 48 kHz if you don't use too many plug-in too get few latency. My advice is that you have to record with 44.1 kHz first. It may sound crappy. Then export the track and then put it back to 48. Try this instead. I will be keep in touch. Then we will talk about adjusting EQ. I'm didn't know much about audio engineering. But I'll help you as I can.

@@ShalomPhone Hello sir! I have actually use ALL the plugins out there, haha! Yes guitar rig 5, 6, helix native, amplitube, bias, everything sucks FOR ME. Strange fact, even all the neural DSP plugins suck for me. Somehow only overloud works just a little in the ballpark of an acceptable tone. I'd still prefer it to sound much better. But overloud is only plugin I can play through sounding 10% of how it must sound. I've tried playing with 44.1hz, 48khz, 96khz, 196khz, I think 196khz sounds little bit better for maybe just 2minutes initially and then maybe it sounds the same to other frequencies. Some of the plugins don't support more than 48khz, so I keep my default settings on 48khz or 96khz these days. I am mainly trying to get a guitar playing tone right now and not looking to record guitar atleast for next few months. But it just doesn't sounds alright like we hear in other youtube videos.

Great content very informative video. I have been wanting to record electric guitars for year and never got the quality I wanted to, I've wasted money on amp plugins amp Sims, microphones , I even bought a new guitar and amp 😂 . Bias fx 2 does not work at all like it's advertised in the videos with my setup and yet no one really talks about it much. I think people should know what they are getting into and that it is very frustrating to buy something and not have it sound the way you want to. Finally someone that explains it. I have a cheap D.I the donner special-I and I am using the focusrite 2i2 2nd generation. Would you agree that in my case it is definitely the scarlett 2i2 that is the problem as it is a pretty cheap interface with cheap preamp. Should I save up some money and get a decent interface like the one you have or maybe even go for appollo twin ??? Thank you for answers on this, this is a Topic I would like that everyone knows about and stop wasting money on stuff that will NOT give you a better tone.

Dude, trust me, I have been dealing with exact same issue since past several years. I've tried pretty much every plugin that exists out there including Bias, Amplitube, Neural DSP, ML sound, Overloud... You name it and I've tried them all. I too had focusrite scarlet 2nd gen. I thought it's the problem so I upgraded to more expensive RME Baby face Pro FS. It made absolutely NO difference. Sounds the same like focusrite. So $1000 wasted. I've tried all different guitars with Seymour duncans, Dimarzio, Fluence, EMG... Nothing ever sounds right. It's always muddy, horribly weird. Can't even explain in words. @@ratedrsuperstarthega I understand your concern , I was exactly like you asking myself and people around me the same questions. That made me waste a lot of money for what I wanted , people would usually not answer my concerns because it took too long or they trying to keep the secret to themselves. Well, here's the truth. I can get a pretty good tone out of Amplitube4 and Neural stuff , but they usually dont sound as perfect within the DAW , so there is a lot of gain staging involved here and also a lot of EQ work has to be done where as UAD stuff you can configure and then commit to the sound by recording it straight to your daw. Thanks to Unison Technology , it actually matches the impedance to one of a real amp, they sound really realistic. Maybe try to EQ the signal to get it as clear as possible then boost the volume with compression or gain knob. But overrall , if I knew first hand , I would still go with UAD stuff because it would save me a lot of hassle. Hope this helps you down the road , good luck

My Tascam 1820 had 750k impedance for the instrument input. This results in a loss of high end. A DI box gave a more proper response. An AXE I/O with variable impedance gave more flexibility. Amplitube 5 through a Quantum2626 is giving me the opposite issue. Over accentuated high end. B and E string on a SC strat are overly bright, and any previous girth has gone missing. Hoping its just an impedance issue. Specs are >1Meg. I've yet to measure, but its acting like when you change the impedance too much on the axeIO. 1meg is about the sweet spot. Going a little lower softens the high end- too low(750k) and its a wet blanket. Too high? A treble thin mess. (Sounds like going from higher output pickups to VERY weak pick ups). Not sure if this is an Amplitube5 issue, or a DAW issue, at the moment. Hoping its the DAW, because THAT? You can fix.

@@adityabali1939was the issue solved bro? I faced the exact issue with Cort 7 string that came with fishman fluence modern active pickups. Signal clips even at 0 gain on the steinberg interface. Absolutely unable to record anything without clipping. The line inputs sounded muddy and clipped as well. I finally did some research and installed jumper shunts on both pickups to lower the pickup output gain by 8db and then ran the guitar through a passive DI box into the audio interface. There has been a significant improvement after that. I can now raise The input gain knob on the interface till about 1 to 2 o clock without clipping the signal. Basically my understanding of this problem is that most budget interfaces in the market are not really designed to handle high impedance signals. There are some videos explaining how to increase the headroom of the preamps in audio interfaces by modding the guitar cable or adding some resistors to the interface. But eventually the di box is what is keeping me afloat. Problem solved at least by 80%

I've also tried a DI box between Guitar and interface using XLR mic pre on interface. No good results. As a third interface, I also tried my friend's boss GT 10 and Boss GT 100 used only as audio interface (no internal sound from those device). Again, same woofy sound which is full of much. Tried multiple guitars with Dimarzio, Duncan JB, EMG 81, Strat single coil. Everything sounds woofy.
