Why does my hen have a messy, smelly bottom? Is it Vent Gleet?
Phill talks about the causes of Vent Gleet in Chickens, which is a serious condition if left untreated.
Certainly, the wet muddy conditions in the chicken run won't help as bacteria becomes rife - watch this week's #AskPhill video where, despite his man-flu, Phill battles through to answer your questions on this rarely discussed condition. Phill describes Vent Gleet, a bacterial yeast infection - or 'a messy bottom' - how to prevent it and how to treat it*.
Symptoms of vent gleet in chickens may include a foul-smelling discharge from the vent, inflammation, swelling, and redness of the vent area, and a decrease in egg production. Chickens with vent gleet may also have difficulty defecating and may appear weak or lethargic.
*One thing that was missed in the video is that due to the nature of the bacteria, the over-the-counter Canesten Cream can be very effective when applied to the vent daily.

Thanks Phil good advice....I’ve started to give my flock fermented feed and yogurt regularly and ensured that their coop is kept clean. I also found using Kombucha in their water every day in fresh water ...cheaper than apple cider vinegar and easy to make. Kefir yogurt is also very good. If anyone knows if sodium bicarbonate would help........

You suggested apple cider vinegar and garlic in the water. Is there a specific concentration? And what form of garlic do you use? Also, is this safe for ducks? I have two ducks in with my hens so I need to make sure that any treatments I use on the hens won't hurt the ducks either.

Suggestion: Don't use vinegar in a galvanized water can. Your birds can get metal poisoning from the chemical reaction and your can will rust.

It may vary depending on which brand you purchase as to what they advise, but as a guide we usually recommend about 20ml per litre of water

If I can't eat it safely, then I don't feed it to my hens.
