One of my Buff Orpingtons passed away and she had no feathers around her lower back. I thought maybe it's from the cockerels getting on top. She would give herself dust/soil baths. But I dont know why she passed away. There is another Buff that is slightly the same in having little to no feathers on her lower back. I read Garlic and garlic juice sprayed is good?!?! Also washing liquid and water sprayed in the hutt!?!?! Are good for getting rid of lice.

Thank you Phil, your movies are very informative indeed. I have little chickens (small race I mean) and I have a big problem catching them to check them. I am afraid they peck me or that they are getting a trauma from my miscatching them. How can I best catch them? Thanks.

My hens were doing great. I bought straw for their bedding because it hasnt been a great summer. And now we have red mite. So i lime washed the coop. Hens seem lethargic today. Checked through their feathers and theyve lice too. 🤦🏻‍♀️First time seeing them. So treated them with a anti lice spray and diatomaceous earth. 🤞🏼 Hoping that will help.

🤞🤞🤞 Wishing you the best with your red mite situation! If you're not doing so already, pop a tonic in the chickens water that will give them an extra boost of nutrients, it should help with the lethargy

You are so great with chickens, thank you for all the advice, would you have any advice for pigeon feather mites? chewed feathers on the neck and back of the head. I have tried almost everything on my 300 pigeons. Thank you in advance.
@phillipweymouth430
@phillipweymouth430 4 года назад
Dear Chrysoula, what is required is a topical "spot on" treatment such as Ivermectin or Harkermectin. I am not sure what country you are in but Google will give you an equivalent product.

What was the stuff for the bedding in the coop? And Battles red mite powder is for the birds? Correct?

Thanks Phil very useful videos you've done. I've got 13 chickens out of them are 4 transylvanian naked neck girls and a boy. I've noticed couple of weeks ago my naked neck hens were very dirty at the back. I checked one of them and found out lice on all 5 of them. But surprisingly rest of my chickens were all cleared. Is this something to do with this particular breed?

Hi Phil, Could you please let me know how much of the Invermectin I can use on the spot treatment for the feather mites on the pigeons and how often? should I use it also on the birds that show no signs of feather mites? and what about the coops? Thank you so much for your help!!

Hi Phill, Thanks, that is helpful advise. I am not 100% sure that lice are the problem for my chickens. I have 2 out of 6 who have quite bare bottoms. I suspect that they are the two that sleep in the nests rather than on the roost. Sitting in their night droppings is, I think, the cause. Now I am cleaning the nests of droppings they look cleaner but the feathers have not come back. I have been manually putting them on the roost but this hasn't changed their habit (and it is tedious!). Any ideas?
@flytesofancy
@flytesofancy 2 года назад
Hi Colin, Perseverance is the solution unfortunately - but even then it is not guaranteed. As a general rule the only way to encourage hens to roost is to be direct and place them there, however if it is a habit that has built up over time, it can be difficult to break. In the same way that it can be a slow process with Ex-battery hens and encouraging them to perch as it is something that they never had to learn how to do! As for the feathers, you may find that is a symptom of the nesting as when they bed down they can damage and essentially buff away the softer feathers on their underside. Otherwise try them on a high protein treat to encourage feather growth :)

Hi Phill, I'm following up my earlier question. I have been putting two hens back on the perch consistently each night. Generally they are both sleeping in the nests. Sometimes one is on the perch but never the other. The latter bird even found another spot last night. When I put it on the perch, all the others move away (not so for the other one). It is like she is a leper or perhaps a loner. She also has a bit of diareahea and one eye that doesn't look right. I am starting to think forcing her back with the others may not be the best idea. Open to all ideas!

@@colinscott5656 I would perhaps isolate her for a few days, just in case. i would also block off the nesting boxes overnight to stop them sleeping in them.

You will find that birds that are not on top form will be more likely to suffer from lice. I would suggest giving them all some Oreganico in their water as well as treating the lice with Battles Red Mite Powder.

How much dia earth do you put in the bath please?
@flytesofancy

Depending on the size of your dust bath, a few good handfuls/scoops will do fine. Just be sure to top it up once a week to keep it doing its job :)
