One reason why Thailand drives on the left is because the British used Thailand (then known as Siam) to travel between their two colonies, which were British Burma (now Myanmar) and British Malaya (now part of Malaysia). Back then, during colonial times, both Myanmar and Malaysia drove on the left, so Thailand had to follow suit, due to sharing borders with two former British colonies. One reason why Singapore speaks English is because Singapore's government wanted English to be a language that Singaporeans of all ethnic and linguistic backgrounds can use to communicate with each other.

To add more to the question of why Southeast Asia is so populated, there are certain parts of Southeast Asia that have very fertile land like Java Island in Indonesia, Mekong Delta in Vietnam and many others. Stupid! Vietnam has 55 different ethnic groups, 55 different peoples. The "ethnic Vietnamese" (84% Vietnam's population) you referring don't call themselves "Vietnamese" but "Kinh". "Vietnamese" is exonym. In Vietnam, "Vietnamese" means all citizens of the SRVN regardless of ethnicity, but in outside world, the Kinh are outspokenly recognized as "the Vietnamese". So, back then thousand years ago the Austroasiatic Vietic-speaking ancestors of modern Vietnamese Kinh were just tribes among tribes and not representatives of all Vietnam!!! There are many Tai and Chamic peoples and play the equally significant roles in Vietnam's history and, fight against Chinese empire.

Because metric is superior and much simpler it become world standard

As a Thai with many vietnamese friends, The Vietnamese has a simple answer to why they "like" the us. At least in Vietnams case, the US admits its war on Vietnam was bad. You can always make friends with a Bully that apologises, than one who pretends it never happened *coughchinacough* and have been best of friends all along. At least that's what they told me. While I understand the general context is a a little bit more complex than that, because the Vietnam war has always painted the US unfavorable in the case, which has been seen positively by the Vietnamese in general public, while the US general public has been in general Negative towards the US decision on the Vietnam war and its involvement. And not to mention condemning the atrocities that US committed on Vietnam. So the Vietnamese people generally see the American Citisens positively, for they understand that many of them stood up against their own government to end the war. And it is what Ho Chi Minh was playing at as well. and why it was never pushed a fierce Anti-american rethoric in Vietnam, and mostly focused on Defend the homeland against invaders. Rather than painting that every American is the embodiment of evil.

So don't potray vietnam war is US vs Vietnam, cos it wasn't. It's the communists in vietnam who were destroying their own people (esp the south) and US (whatever their agenda is) had huge role to help vietnamese, some of which were those who had to run and escaped by boats like my acquaintance family. Make a history of Myanmar please. Especially the name around it, almost all the RU-vidrs got it wrong by saying the military regime created the word "Myanmar", infact the word was created more than a thousand years ago when the kingdom of Bagan was founded. You can find the written word on tablets, scrolls and walls of the pagodas. While Burma came from Bama which is how Indian traders called the Myanmar people. The name came from the kingdom and the people east of Brahmaputra river which is the Bagan Kingdom, ofcourse this name stuck around as an informal name around traders and when the British first arrived to India and asked them who are the people in the east? The indians simple said Bama.

Before that, people could drive from Singapore on the left all the way til Pakistan. Another trivia: Indonesian also drive on the left.

The flag of malaysia wasn't inspired from british east indie company flag. It was actually design based on johore sultanate flag. In original design the canton was in red colour while the stripe in blue. The head minister of johore sultanate at that time tun onn jaafar ask muhammad hamzah ( the creator of the flag) to reverse the blue and red because the yellow star with red background look like a communist symbolism. Then he ask the 5 pointing star to be 11 pointing star to make it more less communist.

The committee changed it to what it is today, and if they (the committee) say it's based off of the BEIC then you take their word for it because in the end the final design was theirs, only based off of Muhammad Hamzah's submission.

as a singaporean, i would say the lingua franca of singapore is singlish which is a creole of english chinese and some malay, but when in doubt you can use chinese(since most people can speak it or at least understand a bit of it) rather than english as the older people are generally not that fluent in english while the younger generation generally can speak their mouth tougne(aka mandarin/chinese for the most part)

They are mixed Malay from Singapore. Can understand Malay, but can't speak Malay fluently. My grandfather migrated from Southern Thailand 100 years ago, can speak Siamese among his siblings but didn't teach any Siamese dialect to my mom & her siblings. Education is started from home. That's how, a culture developed.

1:20 Yes, including USA's role in it. Apparently Thomas Jefferson was a fan & metric system had some influence in US adopting a decimal system for its currency & US$ was probably among the early decimal currencies. 3:57 I think a better question would be 'Why US adopted British East India Company flag?' coz even the so called "Grand Union" flag is an exact same flag as the EIC flag with different dimensions. 4:46 In particular "Tamil Nadu" not "South India" coz not everyone in South India is Tamil.

Myanmar actually does not use imperial at all in day to day usage. Traffic speed signs are in km/h etc. Malaysia was not the only neighbour that drives on the left. Myanmar drove on the left till a general changed it. Btw most of the world drove, ride and walked on the left, before US changed it to right. Many countries drive on the left that are not commonwealth. Indonesia for example.
