The standard comes from when film was used for movies. All film contains a bit of “lead in” film that is used to spool the film into the spools and it also contains information to help the projectionist. If the film started at time code 0:00:00:00 the lead in would have a negative time code which is hard to manage. So instead they decided that the start of the movie will be at time code 1:00:00:00 and time before that will be for the lead in.

Thanks Daniel. I am just starting out making videos with this software and am working through all your advice for nubes. Very useful stuff. It's also interesting that I even found a way to turn off sound at my computer while the sound is still in the videos. I don't know how I did that one. I ended up stripping the software out of my computer and reloading to fix the issue. But again, thanks for your videos, we noobs do need a bit of help. Now if I can just remember to get all of my face in the shot I will be doing great. Ah, what the heck, I don't really need the top of my head.

For Feature Films we have a 10 second count down with tone before the film at 00:59:50:00. Then the movie starts at 01:00:00:00 so the timecode is consistent with picture for Audio syncing/mixing reasons. Then there is a 2 pop 2 frames at end of picture.

It's all in how people like to work. The software is quite adaptable. This is good, but it does introduce a learning curve.

@@oldfarthacks I'm moving from Premiere to Resolve which is why I'm watching these videos. When you learn to edit you learn what you can do. But switching you know what you want to do you just now have to figure out how to do it. It's Definitely a Learning Curve. But it seems like Davinci is the new Premiere and looks like many ppl use it for feature films now. Beside the industry's Avid. Bc they hate change lol.

Thanks for the explanation. I'm going ask something that maybe can help some creators, if you think that can be important. Lately I received a lot of emails from people wanted to help my channel grow. I always deleted these emails because I'm not interested and they always talk about my gaming channel or how to complete the monetization requirements. I have to laugh because I don't have a gaming channel and monetization is already done. Maybe it's important or not.

O appreciate all these DaVinci pointer because I will probably buy the keyboard that comes with the license. My question is WHERE are people buying their Blackmagic keyboards ($595). I like the idea of buying from Amazon but there are only 35 reviews which seems strange for how popular this program is.

I can’t tell you why timecode always starts at 1 hour, but it’s been that way as far back as the videotape days when I was in TV school back in the 90s.

Someone suggested it was from the film era when projectionists used to have to swap reels and they needed a lot of pre-roll to align the reel changes. Not sure if that's true but it sounded as plausible as anything

01:00:00:00 Works great (for the 2nd timeline) when using multiple timelines at the same time, in the edit PG. Most of te time people just ignore the or just see if they are moving when there is BLACK in the timeline.

Great comments. I would say if it's an industry standard it's probably best to acclimate yourself so it doesn't cause you issues down the road when you go to work with others.

I don't think it's an industry standard, I think it's an older era broadcast standard. Someone explained to me that it was from the time when film projectionists needed the pre-roll to align physical film reel changes. Not sure if that's true but it sounded as good as anything. Changing it really is a matter of personal preference. For me, all DAW counters start at absolute zero so I change it in my video editing settings too.

CMX editors at NBC would start timecode at 11:00:00 That way when they had to input a record machine timecode number they could hit the #1 twice and move faster.

Someone mentioned that one of the reasons we see that 1 hour mark is back in the day, projectionists needed that pre-roll to handle reel changes and whatnot. Seems as reasonable as anything.

As with everything Resolve... there is ALWAYS more than one way to skin a cat. If you want to set Resolve to always give you the zero'd timecode: Click on DaVinci Resolve in the upper left > Preferences > User > Editing > New Timeline Settings at the very top > Start Timecode. Man... this high-functioning editing software is a workout, huh Iggy? 😅

Ha! Same! Nah, you can change it to whatever you want. It's just a matter of preference. Speaking of which, if you want to change it permenantly for all future projects, you can do that under Davinci Resolve > Preferences > User > Editing >Start Timecode

In theory there is nothing that you can screw up that you can't change back. The whole trick is to remember what you changed, which can at times be a call to reload the software to fix all the things that you have screwed up.

@@Daniel_Batal Actually, it's a leftover from when the Divas of film were told to be on the set at a given time and were always late. Then they would show up and say " I'm ready for my close up.". LOL Actually, I have a daughter like that, always late and then everything runs on what we call Sandra Time.

As I said, it's just an arbitrary industry broadcast standard. It doesn't affect anything by changing it other than to give you something more personalized to your preference as an editor.

When I try to make a compound clip in resolve 19 as I was used to do it in 18, I get this message each time: "The value entered is not a valid timecode value" What has changed in version 19? I never before had to give a timecode to a compound clip...

good to know i fixed this already. but Daniel i have question to you . does old driver for PC user under davinci 17 studio have bad impact ? i still have interlaced problems after render. Some1 who have video with fps problem just told me use nvidia studio version.

There’s just not enough information for me to even guess at why your footage on your system might be having issues. Maybe try enabling the deinterlace feature on the asset.

@@Daniel_Batal when we importing any video davinci is asking every time to change frame rate .My videos are long its 30-60 minutes .So i want to add intro to my videod .Without intro its easy but thats not the way i want to share videos to my audience .Without intro and just by adding animation button and no other subtitles its way easier but i find out that viewers want to read where i am or specific location .I will update my driver to my graphic card as this driver is from CD so its not for studio for sure it gaming drivers .Wonder if graphic driver will have some impact for rendering . Hope it helps as Davinci is really fast app but this fps problem and interlace is really pissing .👋

When I import my iPhone videos into da Vinci, they will not open like they do in Wondershare. Is there a no auto convert in da Vinci? If not, what software do I need to convert the iPhone videos?

If you're using the free version, there are some file type limitations that aren't available but are in the Studio version. I would suggest converting them first.

Well, it seems that Wondershare may have blocked the automatic file conversion feature. I am currently at the lowest level of Wondershare version, and it’s giving me notifications for watermarks will be applied. I have never upgraded from the lowest version of Wondershare.

Those who do not consider themselves noobs in dealing with complex systems such as this software should contemplate the true scope of their noobdome. I for instance have used CAD packages for decades, including AutoCad and Fusion 360. After around 40 years, I realize that I still only know a small fraction of what is there. So noob to me is an honorable title, akin to seeker.

I was also quite frustrated with this, so I Googled for a bit myself. It's more of a interesting, yet dumb tradition that has passed down in the movie industry. Back in the days when the filmed clips were compiled in physical reels, each reel had to be filled by 1 hour long filming tape. In many cases, the first reel was used to store the pre-movie scenes to adjust film settings and etc. And since an hour long pre-movie tape was used in the first reel, the second reel, AFTER an one hour mark, contained the tape that marked the beginning of a movie. We now no longer use physical reels to compile filmed scenes, but using one hour mark as a starting point has stuck as a tradition since then.
