I think you just hit the nail on the head. After the fall of the USSR, the US dreamed and demanded global hegemony. Russia desires its 'sovereignty'. World domination means domination in the military and economic spheres, but also in those of thought and culture. Russia holds out here too in its criticism of neoliberalism and the consumer culture it depends on.

We love Putin for his security politics and raising military strenght. Orherwyse the US would have pushed the NATO into more troubles with Russia. Balance of power is the only force the Neocons respect. Regards from Switzerand ☀️

The Neocons respect nothing. They are obsessed with their maniacal push at finishing the Trilateral Commission/PNAC goals and that is to finish old rivalries in Europe. I just wonder if they will throw Switzerland under the bus. They have done enough tunnel building in Syria and have profited enough on weapons sales, so under the bus might be their deserved resting place. Where is the Peace Movement?

I’ve been in this fight all my life, I can remember marching with my Grandmother for equality and thinking “If this is the most Democratic country in the world then why is there so much inequality.” I’ve been studying Marx lately and I believe he is one of the greatest philosophers of our time; because he defines the Human Being in a transition of becoming through the evolution of Capitalism. Anyone that studies Marx knows that the US is the Poster child for “contradiction that leads to Crisis that eventually leads to collapse.” The ultra right wing Libertarian doctrine that Trump and his Puppet-Masters are implementing in this country and the world is the contradiction that leads to final collapse. This Cabal is the result of Capitalism mutating because of its refusal to deal realistically with the over-determent contradictions of the 1960’s, 1970’s and 1980’s. Some of the contradictions contributing to the final collapse we’re presently in are 1) destroying the social safety net when the West is aging 2) dividing the world into makers and takers when society is where it is today because we are ultra-social individuals and the notion that 3) we can continue to soil in our nest and think it won’t become uninhabitable. As Marx points out there are an unlimited number of over-determinants that are a part of Capitalism and for the last 250 plus years it has been able to mutate. There is no Democracy in this country it’s just another one of the contradictions. The US has been living off of the rest of the worlds Dime since the end of WW2 and it's coming to an end; that is why we have Bernie and Trump. I watched as the housing market imploded, my kids and wife tried to get me to join the something for nothing Gravy Train. I watched friends and family members buy homes they couldn’t afford then keep refinancing them to buy STUFF they didn’t need and when things imploded saw the blame get shifted to Sub-prime buyers. I’m so tired of hearing liberals talk about Obama blew it; Obama was so much the mirror of me, the dialectic which is America. The child that is not accepted as Black or White, the child that embraces the “Will to Power.” If the crash of 2008 had of happened just a couple of months later it would have been Hillary’s problem. All the people of the US wanted from Obama was to get the something for nothing party started again. The reason China is the villain now is because they told the west it’s time to shut the party down. It’s pretty rich of the US to look at another country and say they are doing it wrong when we’re the enablers of the genocide going on in Yemen and Gaza and no one seems to be concerned with the fact that over 60% of America’s population has been deemed disposable surplus. Trump can’t find money for affordable health care or money to relieve student debt but he can find $12 billion for a crisis he manufactured. Trump and his band of Sociopaths are doing what is in their nature to do; the $ Million question is why are we allowing it. Because we are the real contradiction that leads to Capitalism’s collapse “We think we’re separate entities from the Universe when we are a part of this complex living organism. Russia, China and the rest of the World see the collapse that is coming; we can’t see it because we’re to use to living off of someone else’s Dime so we put the Trump Circus in charge hoping that contradiction won’t lead to crisis and we can avoid collapse.

Brian Booker I think it's important that everyone read Marx if only to understand the friction between the classes. But I don't think the current US government is Libertarian...if anything they are neoliberals ie. Corporatists and that is similar to the regimes that Thomas Paine and Adam Smith were writing about 250 years ago. Libertarianism is an offshoot of Liberalism and for that you have to go back to them. But just remember they lived 100 years before Marx so their differences in perspective are largely due to their differences in eras.

I just read Nancy Maclean's "Democracy in Chains" and she chronicles how James Buchanan developed this off shoot of Austrian political-economic theory that was adopted by Charles Koch and his Billionaire friends. Everything that the US is accusing Russia of doing is what this Cabal did and more. They now control the levers of Democracy; politicians (republicans and democrats) are controlled by them and now they have control of the courts. This is the final contradiction; the US can no longer be regulated to create equality; we're going to have to start from scratch and create a post Capitalist/Carbon world; if we haven't waited to long.

Interesting to see the disagreement on the existence of social democratic opposition. Buzgalin is right that until last few years there was virtually no such movements in the West. Paul Jay is right in that some have appeared recently. I don't know about Russia. This series is excellent for the in depth look at a terra incognita.

Well, the results of US hegemony have not been good anywhere, we have actual history to show that. We also know that it is not people orientated, but rather for corporate and military interests. It is also apparent that US hegemonic activity is always ultimately aimed to achieve illegal regime change and frequently if not always foments dissent to bring about regime change under the guise of promoting democracy and at the same time demonising current leadership. Subsequently destabilising legitimate governments, which are labeled 'Regimes', with so-called colour revolutions, has been a favourite methodology. Therefore this approach has encouraged strong central government in countries under threat. Without the constant threat of US hegemony natural political development is more likely to proceed everywhere as long as the US does not continue to meddle and act as the 'values' policeman of the World under the guise of US exceptionalism when in reality US values are a myth.

Paul Jay, the duopoly has does everything it can to eliminate social democracy and the word 'socialism' from our political discourse. We have no effective left -unlike Europe, where multi party systems, the ability to organize, stronger unions, massive demonstrations in the main streets and the right to put on a general strike. We have none of that here and Buzgalin's question to you is more than justified. I ask myself every day the same thing. Most of what progressives here try to get to the table has existed in Europe for decades, such as 12 month maternity leave, 40 days of paid vacation, healthcare, etc.

Big issue not disused, how many extremist would spill over tomorrow across slack borders into Russia, and strategically, two bases in Mediterranean only flight distance fro home bases are valuable assets, worth maintaining. We heard from US sources where the monies and military "experts" come from to train the various factions that could in future be linked to predatory capitalism, it is investment goes the argument...
