It's a great $960 printer. How did I come up with that number? My Ender 5 S1 upgrade list is: Sonic Pad/Klipper ($160) Replaced every single fan ($50) Modder Board ($40) PEI Sheet ($25) CHT Volcano nozzle ($25) +8 hrs installing upgrades and resetting tension on all wheels and belts To make it a great print will require at least $200 in parts and 8 hrs of labor. I think it a great project printer (if you want to spend a lot of time working on your printer) Out of the box it is an average printer at a high price. My full build can be done for little as $600 using less expensive vendors. Would have made more sense if creality shipped this with Klipper integration, basically combo a Sonic Pad into it for the same price.

@savesilence good thing is you can get amazon returns for cheap these days.. the Ender 3 S1 is a good deal at $200.. and the Ender 5 Plus is $300.. with the ZeroG Mercury.1 being $250, the 5 Plus CoreXY is less than $600.. plus you get the 300x300 size..

@Russell Phelan the sprite pro with a CHT nozzle is a high flow hotend though. I get insane volumetric flow out of mine. No need to upgrade unless you want lightweight, and even then the weight savings aren’t huge.
@NathanBuildsRobots
@NathanBuildsRobots Год назад
@Russell Phelan It depends... For the Ender 5 S1 you get silent stepper drivers and a good direct drive extruder (both are a must for me). You can probably get a lighter extruder, but it is hard to beat the raw volumetric output of the sprite with a good hotend.

Bambu Labs are closed source and not really easy to mod, and they are considerably more expensive than the Ender 3 line. If you don't want to tinker and just want the out of box experience, with no real way to upgrade a lot, then they are great, but if you are the type that likes to tinker around and "upgrade" then they are not going to give you what you need. They are great printers with great features, but are not in the price league for the build size. They are definitely more expensive.

Buying a "returned, unrepaired" Ender 3 was a bargain at $69. Forget the rest of them. This one will do all that I need.
@otohudak5675
@otohudak5675 Год назад
Regarding the advantages, you forgot to add that Ender all parts can be bought and replaced in case of failure. At Bambulab, you will have to buy a new printer in the event of a fault on the X,Y axes. And as another plus I see the possibility of upgrading by the user. Bambu lab does not allow this either. The older Ender design seems more robust to me.
@JJShankles
@JJShankles Год назад
That's not specific to Creality. Almost every printer besides the Bambu can be repaired, and that is one of the things I really don't like about the P1P. I was just using that one as a comparison of what a really fast printer can be.

If you own this printer and use the version of Cura in came with, the first thing I think you should do is go into the start g-code for this printer and delete the line “G29”. If you don’t the printer will execute the auto-level function before every print. If you want it that way then don’t delete the line but I rarely have to re-level my printers after getting it right. That being said, I own the Ender 5 s1, I’ve had it for a few months now and though I agree it’s not worth the price, it has been a good printer for me thus far.

You are all wet on this one JJ! Yeah, I'm a noob and don't have a RU-vid channel with 100k followers, but my early experience with this printer has not been anything like you describe. First, this printer can be had for $450 (I paid $460 for it) now. I've even seen a sale price sub $400. When I purchased mine, they had at least 5 other printers running of different brands, ranging in price from $199 to over $1k. As far as the noise was concerned, it was quieter than the cheapest models and I could not detect it being noticeably noisier than the more expensive units. Since I've had it home, it's never made any of the sounds that you describe. I also don't understand your complaints about the build plate. You cannot see ANY evidence of previous prints on the surface. Given the variety of materials the all-metal hot-end can print, it seems like with the stock build plate that extra adhesion will come in handy. If you MUST have a PEI build plate, they are $40 full retail price. Then, let's get to the print quality. After the simple build and setup, and just one attempt at leveling before my first print, my Ender 5 S1 printed out a Benchy I would put up against any printer costing 2X as much. No artifacts. Zero stringing. Crisp, clear details. Layer lines you can feel but almost cannot see without magnification. IMO an excellent result for a noob like myself! Yes, it did take about 45 min. to print. For someone new to 3d printing, unless you are ready to spend $800+ to get started by purchasing a faster printer or modifying a cheaper one, then there is naturally going to be a tradeoff. As far as specs go, they are not bad. I was also considering an Ender 3 S1 Pro (just under $400 on sale) that is slower, w 10mm less build volume on the Z axis, and a larger minimum layer thickness. And honestly, I like the full frame design. Since I plan on eventually printing with other materials, this design makes an enclosure easier. Yes, I will admit the beep-touch function is annoying after a time. That is the only complaint you had that I can honestly say I agree with. I would say for someone just getting started in 3d printing, but wants some advanced features, and wants to print within an hour out of the box without endless tweaking, and without selling a kidney, THAT is the reason for the Ender 5 S1 'to exist'!

Hopefully we'll have updated Marlin firmware for this machine soon, which will include Input Shaping to mitigate some of those artifacts. Of course, we can't do too much about worn out wheels, and the acceleration out of the box is definitely too high for the weight of the gantry. The UI is also pretty lacking, so hopefully we can improve that as well. Creality provided us with the full Marlin source for us to adapt, but it is altered specifically for this machine (and one other), so it's been a minor hassle to merge it into the root project. The PR in-progress is 25382 if you want to follow our testing and fixups. At the moment it might not run at all, as I was getting a reboot loop on my last attempt. But that should be sorted out soon, so keep an eye on the conversation on that PR.

@viru52000
@viru52000 Год назад
There are Core-XY conversions for this printer, but with the extra cost, you're over the price of existing Core-XY machines that are better (P1P is a perfect example). The most heavily modded one I know of is Core-XY, Klipper, added enclosure, and changed the extruder and hotend... not something I would do, but he got the printer for free, has access to a cutter for the panels, and had most of the other parts laying around.
@GuysShop

Great review JJ! I do agree with everything you have said on this printer. Especially the price point it currently sits at. I will say however once Klipper has been installed on it and pressure advance and input shaping are configured, the ringing does go away. I can now pretty reliably print at 100-120 mm/s with 5000 accelleration. The biggest point to all of that is you shouldn't have to do any "mods" to the printer or the firmware to be able to reach those speeds out of the box at that price.

Lots of very pissed off S1 owners that cant get spare parts for this machine! who in their right mind releases a printer with non standard parts and then makes getting hold of replacment parts impossible? I bought one as my 6th printer, returned it, and splurged on a Bambu X1C. I absolutely made the right choice and will be selling a few of my other printers to add either a P1P or another X1. The Ender 5S1 just did not have the value for the money even though it was a big improvement over my original Ender 5.

I recently got this printer coming from one original ender 3. I got my mine for 400 USD, which i think is what it should stay at and since i love tinkering doing linear rails for the x and y will be fun. So in my opinion i think this is a great printer if you are coming from an older creality printer and u can pick this up for 400 it is well worht it. I have shaved nearly 20 hrs off of the prints so far compared to the ender 3 and i have had less than a week.

I got one of these on Craigslist for 215$ and I basically put it in my car, brought it home, plugged it in, and started printing things, which as a long time 3D printing follower, but first time owner, made me very very happy. After watching this video, I'm not at all disappointed with my purchase, but I'm very very happy I didn't get it at a full price!! Seems like it has flaws compared to other printers in it's "weightclass". But again, for the pricepoint I got, a very very good starting printer.

@GertMalan
@GertMalan 8 месяцев назад
I had mine for about two months now and I am very satisfied with the results, but..... I did upgrade to a PEI bed after one of my prints lifted the coating on the original plate. The PEI plate has an amazing finish and if you let your print cool down, you can just pick it right off the plate. What I should say, though, is that I got it for about 490 USD (Converted from South African Rand) with 4 rolls of eSUN PLA+ filament on a promotion that a local supplier ran. I would say that, if I were to buy myself another printer I would probably buy the E3 S1 Pro because I will not spend the original price on this E5 S1. I think my next upgrade would be an enclosure to enable ABS printing, which is a big plus for this. So, yes, in my opinion if Creality want to keep it at this price point they should at least make the plexiglass enclosure standard, provide a PEI bed plate, some LED lighting and camera and upgrade the wheels to linear rails. All of these are upgrade that I will be doing in the long term which should take my cost up to the original price and then I would think this might be a good deal.

I pre ordered the 5S1 which put it at that Ok price point (they were just under $500 on pre order). Problem is, the pre order machines are riddled with so many issues between the firmware problems and build quality in areas, that the lower price still wasn’t worth the headaches. Apart from the hot end, I don't see any real difference in this from the original Ender 5, which was not as much of a difference over the Ender 3. The build volume, the motion system..... I really don't understand this printer. I did get an original Ender 5. In the original Ender 5 stock configuraion, it can print at 120mm/s with acceleration around 1750 and I can get decent prints with little ringing. Again, that was stock, with stock hot end, stock motion system, stock V channel wheels and Creality Marlin firmware. I don't see the S1 as being an upgrade of any kind, other than maybe having the Sprite extruder, and that is quesitonable as to whether it is an upgrade or not.

I have a Ender 3 neo and the extra space you need is annoying so I think the Ender 5 solved that, but tbh it was Creality way of chucking something together to combat the Bambu and well just doesn’t come close. It’s funny how Creality tries to copy Bambu, fails and then Bambu copy Creality and brings out a bed slinger and does that better. But simple fact is Creality is cheaper so they will always get business
