Key Points:
The monoamine oxidase enzyme A is primarily responsible for breaking down serotonin and norepinephrine and isoform B mainly breaks down dopamine.
Selegiline, available in transdermal patch, is a MAO-B inhibitor at low levels and is FDA approved for both depression and Parkinson's disease.
Food particularly high in tyramine includes aged cheese, aged sausages, marmite, sauerkraut, and kimchi.
Practice caution when combining MAOIs with SSRIs, SNRIs, chlorpheniramine, synthetic analgesics and ziprasidone.
MAOIs tend to cause orthostasis rather than hypertension. If you want to use concomitant stimulants, use methylphenidate to avoid serotonin syndrome and pressor reactions.
