Choice cannot be the theme as it is merely an element of the narrative that derives the actual themes through defining the character's actions. In other words, to identify a theme, you have to understand WHY a certain choice was made, not just the fact of a choice being presented. Saying "choice" is the theme of stories in this genre is like saying "heroism" is the theme, when any reasonable person would say "no shit, but that doesn't really count". One could get away with saying that things like legacy or sacrifice are more accurate themes as they actually speak to choices that characters made, but the mere presentation of choice in and of itself is not a theme. This essay's thesis would've been ripped to shreds by the profs back in my film theory or college English classes...

I was just saying the same thing in a few other comments I made. It's sad that I used to equate screencrush to other "academic analysis" channels like Wisecrack in terms of their research and analysis of pop culture and film theory but just applied specifically to superhero media, but it seems that these days screencrush is very far removed from anything resembling an academic or critical analysis of the texts they cover.

Truth is if marvel wouldn’t be in so much trouble, RDJ would’ve never come back. Marvel is desperate, and RDJ sells. Period.

But just imagine it. Like what if he was attempting to save everyone from the snap and build time travel like the original. But loses. He again travels and gets stuck in the fantastic four universe and attempts to leave it but fails. He becomes miserable. He has no family. No Pepper. No Happy. No Peter or his daughter . He learns magic to escape but it doesn’t work. Soon Reed Richards comes along and together they build an device to help him return. But he ends up in the 616 MCU. He is different. Colder. So the people who knew the other Tony, wants nothing to do with him. Now you have an Tony Stark who knows magic, still have the intellect but just angry. He can do an lot of damage. Who can even stop him?

I agree the choice of doom dilutes his og story but I think we will get a real doom story after the reboot. But also I don’t agree with your sacrifice theme. Sacrifice is more like the theme of the hero’s journey. But the theme is more than just the end. All those people who made sacrifices made choices that effect more than them. Like loki for example. He wasn’t going to sacrifice himself, that was never his goal, plan, or even assumption. Only in the last 20 mins of the last episode does that “theme”become clear. Think about all of season 2. It was all about the choices made by variants and how those multiversal misshapes can change the entire multiverse with a choice. Even Enchantress choice to kill he who remains. That’s the whole basis for season 2, so much so they revisit it as the entire reason any of the multiverse is happening. She didn’t sacrifice anything atleast that’s not how she sees it. It was a choice made by one person with multiversal effects. Which I think is exactly what marvel is going for. Even if it does dilute one of our favorite characters. I’m not saying it’s a good theme I’m just saying it doesn’t seem forced, or atleast less forced then a sacrifice theme would be . Like is it really a sacrifice to become the avatar of the goddess that determines if you go to heaven or not. I feel like that’s a free ticket to the field of reeds…. Okay when I say it like that it sounds like a sacrifice

Exactly! This video essay's analysis really misses the mark by focusing so intently on choice yet missing the point that the Multiverse as a concept is much more about probability than about choice. And when it comes to storytelling, it's about seeing how those probabilities play out based off specific branching points that may or may not be derived from a characters choice (if RDJ is born a native to Fantastic4 universe as their Victor but "just happens" to look like 616Tony, that's not really a choice he made now is it? or if a universe is filled with zombified versions of beloved characters, the story is not about the choices they make since we already know the choices they are likely to make, the story is instead about the probability that their skills, abilities, and choices will help them resolve/survive the apocalypse scenario).

thats honestly my biggest issue, even more so than the choice to not just recast Kang, is that they muddied up Doom so badly with this casting when Superior Iron Man was right there! Now everyone divided and half of fans hate it and other half are bending over backwards to justify how Doom equates to Iron Man when this split reception could've easily been avoided had they brought RDJ back as Superior Iron Man or just say "evil iron man". Even if that's exactly what RDJs role in the movie will end up being, having used Victor Von Doom's name to tell that story is just so muddy.

I am still very upset they nixed the Kang saga. Jonathan Majors is such a great actor and I was genuinely excited. Like even after his court stuff was over they didn't bring him back, nor even offer an apology. But Ezra Miller gets to keep doing DCU movies. Guess that's what happens when you're part of the tiny hat gang.

Yeah, it's really not gonna make any sense if secret wars doesn't make reference to the multiversal Kang war that is supposed to end with he who remains at some point ascending to the throne at the end of time. It will make this whole story nonsensical to just drop Kang completely, because that was a pretty big "future event" that was introduced into the MCU for them to just pivot away from. But who knows if they still care about what makes sense as opposed to what makes dollars, lol
