I personally had seen it as a man that completely understands what he is meant to be, a weapon, and by that he’s locked away in his armor by others; but instead of always taking the helmet off trying to let his humanity appear he is owning his role and committing to it. The behavioral quarks are extensions of the stress his soul is under and the skull makings are as much a testimony to his kills as a cry for true freedom. Hence his willingness to sacrifice and how expected he looked during Kats death. As if he knew that was always going to happen to Spartans. Just like George looking for his honorable death.

I never considered Emile to be a lunatic, unstable or crazy. I of course thought of him as trigger happy and had some issues but those three words does NOT describe him at all.

I think it was because his face was heavily scarred. He’s portraying a strong, stoic type when really underneath the helmet, and inside, is a sensitive, hurt man. He was filling the void for sure.

Emile would also say if you stare at him long enough “There was a time you staring at me like would make me self conscious”

I read that during training he excelled in psychology combat so he carved a skull into his helmet to intimidate the enemy and break them

I always hated on reach when you played multiplayer with his helmet it would sometimes glitch up and the carving would disappear completely leaving you with the EVA

There is some super rare dialogue from him that you can hear from him sometime that he say I'm afraid of dying

I like it. The Covenant, the elites especially, hated how the Spartans never showed their face in combat. Seeing a Spartan that actually has a face would probably scare them, maybe even make them question their sanity for a second.

It’s actually said in Halo Lore that Spartans do not see directly through the visor. The outer part is more like a camera with sensors all around and the Spartans see with a video display monitor in front of their face. This is to avoid reducing protection of the face. If it were to just be glass that they see through, then one shot would end them immediately. Think of it like Iron Man’s suits. There’s 2 really small eye holes with a light coming out. But in the movies we have a view from his perspective and it shows a fully open view for him. This is because his helmet has sensors that scan and record everything and provide him with real time audio and video.

Reach was a good game

I feel like his helmet was a memento mori. "Remember that you will die." It reminds him to live his life to the fullest with no regrets and make the most of every single moment. For Emile, that would be killing Covenant soldiers. This Memento Mori works two-fold as a memento mori for the Covenant. To remind them that, no matter what, they will die. Instead of invoking the ideas of living life to the fullest, it tells them that they will soon be dead at Emile's hands.

Reach wouldn’t have been the same if Emile wasn’t put in the game.

During the mission Winter Contingency, when the farmers come out, Emile points his SG at them and tells them to get on their knees. I feel like that really goes for what you said about him not liking non-spartans and insurgents. Especially when, during that scene, Jorge says that they're not rebels but farmers.

I think Emile want to keep his helmet on to show his enemy with that skull on his helmet to show death.

You know, now that I've watched this it gives me a different perspective on him. At the end, when he was stabbed and said his famous like, "I'm ready! How 'bout you!?" He probably wanted to rest finally. Dealing with all the pain and loss of his actual family then his SPARTAN family. Literally watching EVERYBODY he loves die before his eyes. He never showed it, hid his deepest pain behind the mask, but not just the one we see physically. Essentially he did take off his mask, but not the one he wore on his head, but his heart. Which is badass.
