LOVE your breakdowns! I'm an elder millenial, and a pretty hardcore feminist, and I actually love Eminem and have been following his journey throughout his whole career. Slim Shady is and has always been satire, whether he fathomed that early on or not. It's a caricature of white America, and the type of resentment and hate that's been percolating within our culture all these years. The man himself does not and has never endorsed the beliefs or actions of Slim. He's a fking artist and a genius, and I'll love him forever, whether his albums are critically acclaimed or not. I'm rooting for Em, and we all should be. He is holding up a mirror to white patriarchy and supremacy -- no wonder everyone is mad at him! GET EM, MARSHALL.

I pay all my own bills and have worked for the last 3 years. I'm not still growing up, that was forced upon to grow up too fast but since your comment I guess you wouldn't know anything about that. Not only was the SSLP huge through 1999-2004 but MMLP came out then as well..that's crazy how millennials think gatekeeping a persona is a highlight of their generation, cause it's really not. Gen Z is well into their 20s now. As am I. For me personally I was 7 listening to MMLP and SSLP and then got into The Show and Curtain Call. That was 2008. Well after they were released however, we still grew up listening to Slim. Weird concept ik.

there's a reddit post that breaks down what days eminem has dropped since his first, and it was always a tuseday or a friday, however since 2012 all albums have dropped on Friday. so he just said he's dropping a single on Tuesday 2nd and garenteed the album on Friday 5th.

I'm starting to think the Gen Z that tries to cancel Eminem is a very small group of people, and they don't seem to be organized at all either, they're just individuals who hate him... Every time anyone makes content saying "Gen Z is trying to cancel Eminem!", the comment sections are filled with people saying "No we don't, we consider him a legend!" or "Just because that one dude hates him, doesn't mean our entire generation does!" The only person I've met who doesn't like Eminem is my mom (Gen X) and I think her biggest problem was that in the turn of the millenium, me and my brothers were all still very young children (under 10) and we liked Em. We're Finnish, back then we didn't start learning English until 3rd grade (~9 years old), so we didn't understand a word Em said, but mom still didn't like that we listened to him. (Nowadays, kids start learning English on 1st grade, ~7 years old.) My step sister is 14 (Gen Alpha) and she likes Eminem. She also likes Skandaali, who's this Finnish rapper who's clearly very much influenced by Slim Shady. His lyrics are blatantly misogynistic, but I had a discussion with her about the lyrics after I found out she listenes to him and we agreed on that the lyrics are so over the top, they're obviously a joke. Similarly to Slim Shady. And no, I didn't introduce Eminem's or Skandaali's music to a child, she discovered them on her own and I felt like a serious, but chill conversation about the lyrics was necessary as a grown-up sibling she looks up to. So I sparked up a conversation about music in general and then naturally directed the conversation into the lyricism of Em and especially Skandaali. I've known her since she was around 7-8 years old and she was already into hiphop back then. Her discovering GOATs such as these guys was just a matter of time. Edit: Realized we start 3rd grade the year we turn 9, not the year we turn 10, and fixed that. My point stands - none of us three spoke a word of English back then.

And because she has adults in her life who are on her side and *not* only talking about it just to disapprove or lecture, and especially because she has sympathetic adults who are *not parental figures,* she is gonna be fine. As a grandmother I'll tell you you this is more important than we often know at the time, a relationship like the one she has with you. It's the kids who never learn there's a difference between art and real life, and between an artist and the artist's public persona, that we need to worry about, the ones who have only other children around them who they talk to as they grow up. And our worrying should result in more listening and helping them deal with difficult emotions and experiences, not in censorship and trying to keep them in a bubble away from things we don't like. It's so important for kids to know they have adult allies. Good job.

You're absolutely right with that assumption. There's probably a total of 3 Gen Z people who seriously want to cancel Em. The rest of the people who complain are just doing it for the publicity and the other 99.9% of us either know he's a legend but don't give a shit about Rap or love him. When we grew up Slim Shady was already a well established character since we missed the controversies around him in the early 2000s. There is no reason to be surprised "something like this is allowed to exist" because for us it always did.

It's actually even HARDER to cancel Eminem NOW than it was in 2000. Back then, pressure could be put on radio stations, MTV, and record store to not play him/sell his albums. Media is now consumed differently. Spotify listens matter more than album sales, and let's be real, Spotify won't even cancel Joe Rogan.

Correct except Spotify listens don’t matter more then pure album or single sales. Spotify adds up to equivalent of X amount of actual sales. You can easily buy music directly from Spotify, apple & other platforms online and Ems website so your right it’s impossible to stop online purchases & listening on apps. Not to change topic but i also think its crazy that even tho alot of Ems fans don’t use Spotify he’s still no.5 most listened to artist on it can you imagine the insane numbers he’d be if all fans paid for Spotify 😂

As always, a wonderful reaction. It was fascinating to see the beginnings of cancel culture & censorship. Even then they were saying "Words are violence," an oxymoron if ever there was one. Even then they were talking about "hate speech," which has no place in the 1st Amendment bc the founders considered most of what is called "hate speech" today to be the most protected form of speech -- political speech -- its true name.
