I got engaged in 1997 with no ring, and for a wedding ring we both got simple bands. In the spring of 1998 we put that money towards a boat and named it “Kim’s ring”. My mother in law and many others were horrified but we had the time of our lives on that boat. We even conceived our first child on it! True story.

Look for the lie. Adam always lies somewhere in his videos. Here he states "that ring will have virtually zero retail value if you try and sell it." Lie. Same scam rule of value applies to a good condition used diamond ring as to a new one Of course there is some depreciation like anything else, but you will be able to get 1/2 or more of the value you paid back if you "shop" around. Bigger cut diamonds (like 10 karat) of exceptional quality can be a good hedge against inflation or even a good investment if you know what you doin. I do agree that diamonds are a fake commodity, only valuable because the supply is artificially restricted.

Oh no.. Please tell me it cost the store like $100 and you guys sell it for $2000?
@GeoFry3
@GeoFry3 9 лет назад
Not quite that much, though that would have made the boss very happy. The general scam is this. A $100 item is marked up to $600 and then put 10-50% off. Now sometimes we'd negotiate downward but anything below $200 was up to the boss, none of us worker Bees could go that low. So a $100 piece of jewelry you are going to pay $200-600 for it. Now that was 20 years ago mind you, since I've sold jewelry so the online world has made a dent in those prices, but from what I've seen not that much has changed when it comes to engagement and wedding rings. Diamonds really are quite common. They have thousands upon thousands of tons of them locked away to keep the prices up artificially. As he said in the video just try to sell your diamond and see what you'll get for it. (not much). You might get 1/4 of what it is worth. You can trade it back in at the store you bought it from, but they're making so freaking much off of each sale they can pay you an artificial trade in price and still make a lot of profits. It is the same scam auto dealers run on car shoppers with their trade ins.
@OmniscientWarrior
@OmniscientWarrior 8 лет назад
+GeoFry3 In store they have 900% + mark up. People are so dumb that they haven't figured that out. Some stores even have a 300% off sale. Common sense would say, doesn't that mean you are being paid to buy. Then they would look into it and find the ugly truth.
@TheBooty28
@TheBooty28 8 лет назад
+GeoFry3 True.. there is no shortage of diamonds in the world. That is why when you buy one you cannot sell it back for the same price you bought it for. Most diamond jewellers are ripping people off. I know that as a fact because I did alot of research and was able to get mine in the MIddle east for 60 Percent off the international market price and even then I probably was still paying alot compared to what the guy obtained the diamond for. The key is to do your research and buy your diamond as close to source as possible . STay away from the high street stores. E.g when you buy a tiffany or cartier ring, 80% of the cost is the brand . Who in heaven's name would know you are wearing a tiffany or caratier ring ?? Also there are alot of reaaallly good fakes on the market there now. I think a company has even manufactured a stone that sparkles more than and is harder than a diamond. LOL I believe it is called Amora Moissanite. I would actually recommend women to go down that route because no one would know LOL. I would buy a real diamond setting which usually doesn't cost alot and put the fake stone in it. There are even rich people that do this and know one knows haha.

They told me diamonds were one of the biggest scams of all times and that in the future I should buy from a pawn shop... Even London Gold, who sold us that f***ing ring, would only buy it back for $300... knowing they could put it right back in the display case and sell it again for $4k. Says a lot when the jewelry company that ripped you off tells you exactly what your ring is really worth.

@REgamesplayer
@REgamesplayer 3 года назад
Because supposedly you can't find much of it. This prevents people from inflating supply with said resource and making it worth less. This is why first real money were based on precious metals as it prevented governments from simply making more of it or anyone fabricating forgeries. This however does not mean that there is very little of them. Gold, diamonds and any other "rare" material is mined by millions of tons and there are that much of it circulating in the market. However, when you spread it across all people, governments, etc. There is quite little of it to go around, because people had decided it to be valuable, universal method of exchange. Like diamonds here, they are valuable not because nobody can get them, but because people had decided that these shiny rocks are valuable and that owning synthetic or plastic is not as valuable.

@zaliana15
@zaliana15 7 лет назад
By the way it's more comparable to liking a Porshe 911 and buying a Corvette. Yeah the Porsche is beautiful and you love the qualities but you may not be the type of person to put a lot of value on prestige. So you go with the corvette that still gets you from point A to B in style. The Corvette is not a knock off. Just more sensible. Or you see a black chanel bag. It's gorgeous but the price is outrageous. So you find a similar style made by Coach in Dillard's. Looks very similar but different and the price difference is huge. Is the coach a knock off? No... Knockoffs are made in Asia and Mexico in sweat shops. They are designed for the sole purpose of copying designs. Moissanite is a recreated naturally occurring gemstone. And it is marketed as such. Because of its colorless appears and blinding sparking, consumers compare it to diamonds. It was not marketed or designed to be a diamond. There is already a such thing as lab grown diamonds.

After that, he gave her the roses and took the rubber band only to place it around her finger as a replacement for an engagement ring. bro i'm a girl, and if i ever got married, i'd be 100% okay with not getting a diamond ring. There's nothing wrong with giving a gift to commemorate a big moment in both your lives, but it's plain stupid to sink months of your salary into something so small. If you don't want to support the engagement ring industry, discuss it with your partner. Explain to them that you don't agree with it. Offer some other equally meaningful, but less outlandish, gift to mark the engagement. I mean, yeah, if your partner fully expects a ring and you propose without it all the sudden, i can imagine being disappointed. So before the proposal, find out what your partner wants and TALK ABOUT IT FIRST. Personally, I'd be just as happy with a $100 ring or necklace or something.
@MadDuckInc151
@MadDuckInc151 9 лет назад
Also, if a girl refuses to marry a guy because he doesn't want to spend exorbitant amounts of money on a piece of jewelry, you should really reevaluate your relationship. A marriage is way more than a piece of carbon. If your partner makes you happy and you want to marry them, you don't need to wear their life savings on your finger.

Personally I think it's nice to wear a ring just so everyone knows you're taken, and as a symbol of partnership. But if neither partner is rich, why spend so much money on something that's frankly out of your means? If you'd be taking on debt to buy a diamond ring, then just get a plain metal band, a gemstone ring, or a diamond substitute instead. You could always save money to upgrade it later if you really want.

***** LOL, a friend of mine saw that in one of the Star Trek (next generation I think) that marriage was a contract limited to a number of years. So you marry and two years later it expires. Then if you want to marry again you can extend the contract. Sounds good to me. I have a theory that marriage itself destroys love and relationships because it is a garrantee that you must stay with the person. So people misbehave. But when people can walk away at any time in encourages there lover to mind their Ps and Qs because otherwise the'll find themselves sleeping alone. With marriage people feel trapped and that destroys feelings etc too. You might say that well without marriage people wouldn't stay together so much. Which might be true, but maybe those people shouldn't be together. Two people forced to stay with (and have sex with) someone they no longer want to be with. Sounds like prison to me. ;)

Getting an engagement ring is fine. I think the big point to bring home is that the gem *DOES NOT HAVE TO BE A DIAMOND.* Get something ELSE that you actually want, likely with some color. Emerald, ruby, sapphire, etc. Or if you really want a colorless stone, go for moissanite. Moissanite stones have considerably more of that "fire" and sparkle that diamond ads rave about, and can be as cheap as literally 10 cents on the dollar to a diamond.

My cousin's fiance proposed to her with a ring whose stone wasnt a diamond. Didn't even look like diamond. I have never understood why you should have to buy an expensive ring to "prove" you love someone.
@justmonica9253
@justmonica9253 10 лет назад
Isn't that the core of romance? The point of it all is to prove how far you would go for the person you love, and how much you think of them. Under the assumption you are male, then it is the opinion you just demonstrated that makes this system broken (though I am not saying your opinion is necessarily bad). Because women want their partners to be romantic like this and men don't, romance as a concept has ended up being a pretty one sided thing. Man buys flowers at valentines, man pays for dates, man proposes, yada yada yada. A woman stereo typically has to put up with doing a lot (or simply put up with a lot) as well, but this isn't considered romance. (e.g. being the main contributor to housework, being the primary parent, having sex (apparently this is a bother, who knew?!)). There are other factors as to why this is the case, of course, such as the pre-modern 'women stay at home' mindset, but the romance thing is definitely relevant. Oh, sorry for saying all this, but I really wanted to...

And that's why, when my fiance wanted to blow money on a ring, I said "hell no!" and, instead, had him buy a nice sterling silver ring with cubic zirconia. $18. The ring is meaningless to me anyway. The fact that we love each other is what really matters. He also bought himself a sterling silver ring for $22, even though it's not "traditional" for men to wear engagement rings. As long as it makes him happy. :) I can't stand women who want their guy to blow shit loads of money on a damn ring. You're not supposed to wear it forever, after all. It, technically, gets replaced by the wedding band, so... that's a huge investment on a temporary token. If your girl dumps you for not buying her a $4k ring, she's not worth your time. No, we were in Yosemite at the time of the proposal, we stopped in a nearby town on our way back home, he wanted to look at rings in nearby jewelry shops, I told him that I don't want an expensive ring and that we'd discuss it at home. I brought out a catalog from a company that sells nothing but silver jewelry and trinkets. I picked a ring, he picked a ring, then he ordered them. They arrived and we did the classic "he put mine on my finger and I put his on his" routine, which was touching. End of story. However, thanks for trying to make a non-shallow situation look shallow. I hope you don't think all women are like that and I really hope you don't meet someone who will do what you said in your comment, aka get pissed at you for not getting a dumb diamond ring.
