Why ETA Watch Movements Deserve Respect

For the vast majority of Swiss watches produced, ETA will be the movement manufacturer of choice. Dating back to original controls placed on the Swiss watch industry in the 1920s, ETA has grown into the largest Swiss movement manufacturer yet, in light of in-house movements offered by other brands, regard for these pieces has diminished. In today’s video, I would like to place the spotlight on just why the ETA 2824 and ETA 2892 automatic movements deserve respect.

@@MrJeremy9835 ... right...but Sprod and Sellita used to make produce OEM movements for ETA and their existing movements are basically copies of the 2824 and 2892 as the patents for many ETA movements ended years ago. So the comment holds... a lot of companies... including Sellita and Soprod ...would not be here without ETA ... that includes Patek Philippe which still gets their balance springs from ETA.

Great video. The 2892A2 remains an incredibly robust and versatile movement to this day. One piece of history the video overlooked was the contribution of Richard Habring, who was at IWC in the early 1990s. He redesigned the winding system on the 2892-2, and those IWC improvements were adopted by ETA in what became known as the 2892-A2.

Absolutely correct. The 2824-2 and 2892-2 deserve all the respect it can get. Many big brands survived on it: Omega, IWC, Tudor etc. Nowadays though, it seems that exclusivity and brand snobbism have taken over from the rationale. Good video.

Having a number of watches that date from the 80s and 90s I can whole heartedly endorse the ETA movements. The 2824 is robust, easy to source parts for and easy to fix. I have watches from the 80s with this movement that have barely seen any servicing in their lives and they work just fine. The 2892-2 is my favorite movement of all. This is a fantastic movement and, in chronometer-spec, genuinely as accurate as all but the very best movements money can buy. I have an Eterna Kontiki Sport from 1992 with the full printed report from COSC. In all five positions, at each of three temperatures, the watch recorded +1 to +2 seconds with a delta of just 1 second throughout the testing! That is staggering accuracy and consistency.

Fascinating. I think unless you're getting a high end watch (Omega co-axial/Rolex and above), I think you're better off with ETA. In Sinn, Oris etc, I'd much rather an ETA/Selita than an in-house movement. In-house will be more expensive, not necessarily better, with slower servicing and no guarantee parts will always be available. Nonetheless, brands that charge £2.5-4k for a 2824 - based watch (Doxa, some Tudor/Breitling etc) are simply gouging your eyes out. 2892s are moot - some amazing ones with great value (Longines Spirit), some good, but poor value (IWC Mark). There are some big movement wars ahead though: Kenissi is going to be a big player if Tudor/Rolex/Chanel get their way.

Never realised ETA struck so deep into the heart of Omega. I think this is only a very good thing in the end. The tried and tested backbone of ETA, combined with the panache and extra development from Omega. Just purchased an Oris Aquis 400, mainly from the proposition of the in-house. I just couldn't get my head round the setting issues. Reluctantly, I'm sending it back. Such a beautiful watch, I'm sure Oris will iron out this issue in time, even though they publicly dress this issue as a 'quirk' rather than a problem. Just bought Breitling with the 2892, I can now rest in assurance of the reliability paired with the added features that Breitling has added to this movement, not as extensive as the Omega, but a great balance between quality and individuality. Subscribed 👍

Another workhorse is ETA ´s 7750 which needs a video of its own. Great rundown of the 2824-2 & 2892 👌❤️ very informative 🧐 Another variant based on the ETA 2892 is the 2895 which is worth talking about. The 2895 has 27 rubies (much higher than earlier 2892 /21 rubies), these were seen in: Tag Heuer (Caliber 6), Gucci , with surprising accuracy! Due to ETA freezing stock as a supplier in recent years, a lot of changes have been brought up. Sellita seems to be the newer supplier of movements in the watch industry: Oris, etc.

Great upload Armand. As an owner of several pieces housing the standard 2824-2 & it's Hamilton/Certina extended PR variants I think it's a perfectly capable mov't for sub $1K USD watches. If one is not fussed about Swiss Made 'branding' on their timepiece (for it has devolved to simple branding IMO) I believe the Miyota 9 series mov'ts to be the better option. That said, the though some favoured pieces in my modest collection hold ETA 2824-2 / 2893-2 mov'ts, others hold Seiko's 6R35 or Miyota's 90S5 mov't. The 2824-2 and it's variants are undoubtedly solid and reliable entry level Swiss mov'ts, Japan's ability to equal or possibly best them is interesting to me as the community starts to question the meaning of 'Swiss Made' on our watches.

Very reliable movement indeed. Most of their issues is solved by cleaning and oiling which is cost effective. I think in particular of the 2824 tendancy to get the rotor rolling while being handwound. Also very accurate in my experience, even after 25 years for the oldest I own.

I now have another watch with a derivative of the Sellita SW200-1 and I definitely cannot say the same...infact I read many users simply saying to treat SW200/SW200-1 as a non-manual winding movement and to ONLY wind it enough to start it and let the rotor do the rest.

I’ve been working on watches for years. Recently my grandfather passed down a vintage submariner to me. The movement was long since dead and the quote I got to have it rebuilt would be enough to make you throw up in your mouth. I ended up removing the original movement and fitted the case with an eta2824 and I machined an adapter ring. It’s been regulated to run +1 second a day on my timegrapher. Someday when I have the cash to drop on a used 1520, I will. But until then, the ETA powers my Rolex. Kind of funny in a way. LOL

As a watch technician i always tell my clients that ETA movements(COSC grade Silicone hairspring)are the same as Rolex movements.

Percentage-wise, how similar is it?
@horologywatchmaking13
@horologywatchmaking13 3 года назад
@@BetterTodaywithJasonCruz after servicing and regulating , in terms of performance they are equal. Since the ETA movements that are equiped with silicone hairspring are quite new to the industry, i can't say anything about their longevity yet. But those ETA without silicone hairspring they have always been long-lasting, same goes to Sellita movements. ETA also offers 80hours power reserve 3hands movement & 60hours power reserve chronograph movement that performed exceptionally well. Now combined all these together-80hours power reserve,COSC grade,silicone hairspring,incabloc shock absorber and you got yourself a truly wonderful movement with a price that won't break your bank and performs the same as the watch that will cost you 10 times more. Hope that this simplified explanation helps. Cheers.

@@horologywatchmaking13 Hey mate, thanks for that wonderful and detailed explanation! I appreciate that you took the time to write that out. I used to think low of ETA movements but I've to say, I've gained a newfound level of respect for it. May even shop for an ETA-powered piece soon 😊🤘🏼

@@BetterTodaywithJasonCruz Pleasure is mine. Do keep in mind that for those modified ETA movements with longer power reserve and silicone hairspring they can only be found in brands under The Swatch Group like Tissot,Certina,Mido,Hamilton. They are exclusively only for the Swatch Group's brands and don't sell them to outsiders. Well then i hope everything is well and please take care.

Quality has multiple attributes. In the West people say the word "quality" but what they really mean is exclusivity or luxury. There are people willing to pay outrageous money just to have something others don't have. We could get into philosophical debate why this is the case. But in my opinion quality also consists of reliability and serviceability. If I buy a machine I want it to work and even if it breaks it should make economic sense to fix it. In this sense, ETA-based movements are quality. There are other, more exclusive movements but not all of them are actually that reliable. Some of them are but the service costs are significant. So, one needs to ask what's so special about wearing a watch and make a decision. Also, I think that most customers base their decision on brand, looks and finish. Movement is not always the most important consideration. It's a spectrum where ETA has its place.

What I don’t understand is why with these mass-produced movements people pay so much for watches using them. I am not saying that those watches are bad watches, mass production usually means that something works really really well. But, for an industry where mechanical art is its cornerstone, I just don’t see the appeal of getting more than one or two of the same movement. I also feel uneasy about spending a lot of money to buy a brand when I am essentially just buying an ETA watch with a few modifications and a branded case and dial. I can sympathize with people willing to pay more just to get the entry level (lower quality) in-house movement because at the end of the day, they bought a first party watch as opposed to an ETA watch bearing a name brand.
@baze3SC

They sell you this romantic idea of an old watchmaker assembling your watch but it's not true. 99% of them are branded cases. Even Rolex mass-produces its movements. They ship more than one million watches per year. Do you think they do it by hand?

Can someone help me? I have a ETA 2824 automatic and I noticed that from a cold start (due to no usage after a few days) I can only start up the watch if I spin the rotor counter clockwise. Is this normal? I’ve read that the 2824 rotor had bidirectional winding.

ETA makes the best work horse movements in the industry. This is not to say they lack the precision of high watchmaking. On the contrary, imo the 2824 strikes an ideal balance between reliability, serviceability and finesse. It’s not the best but it is an extremely practical movement.

ETA also produced normal winding movements I.e. non automatic. Those were useful & long lasting for very common man-especially ETA 1080, -ETA 1180 etc. these movements were - tropicalised , having unbreakable mainsprings, have 40 hours winding power, requires very rare maintenance so famous in watch world . But now not available

ETA movement’s are getting difficult to find, but since they have been so popular, there are plenty of parts available. Why are parts important? It’s important because most name brands with in-house unique movements must be returned back to the manufacturer for repairs. Even a minor repair that your local watchmaker could have once ordered a part and performed the work must now go to the factory. In-house parts are not distributed or obtainable to private businesses. Even some of the unique modified ETA parts from a particular manufacture are not for sale. So basic ETA parts being plentiful provides local options. I have a Ulysse Nardin 1846 Marine Chronometer which needed a replacement crown with UN logo and crown tube. Although my local watchmaker was fully qualified to make the repair, he could not find the parts. Instead, I had to send the watch back to Boca Ratan, FL for a complete-non optional-overhaul. My watchmaker could have overhauled that ETA 2892A2 locally.

Really i don't know anything about a ETA automatic movements, but as a user i can say that i didn't saw a better quartz movement than ETA FØ6 quartz movement....really impressive. It can be the end of the world but that movement will survive.....and a most important thing....plus or minus 1 second per week (that's less than a minute PER YEAR)....that's not bad at all i think. There's no ETA or any other automatic movement which can be close to that. good video, like

@@brothacaim well, i don't think.... i would say that Seiko will outperform it only with a price without any reason, and with the amount of scam.... by the way, a 10 USD quartz Casio will outperform any 4000 USD Seiko with a durability, a value for a price and most important... with an accuracy.

Well yes, the Citizen A660/A060/0100 calibers will outpewill Grand seiko 8F and 9F. But it's apples and oranges, the price difference is big. I think GS 8F has been found in some Seiko but it's still in house, 9F is fully in house to GS and the Citizen calibers are only used under the Citizen brand. So apples and oranges IMO.

I think the internet people get used to saying and hearing the notion that in-house movements are more prestigious and somehow inherently better than eta. Which isn't always true. But that's the soup people like to cook up for themselves. So the watch companies oblige the consumer and make more money while at it. That's just one example of the myths that are propagated by social media. And the more they're repeated, the more they are become rooted.
