I believe the 8 pigs is representing their 6 members plus the 2 support guys. One of them being their designer who makes all the album covers and concert visuals and the other being their sound guy(TURN IT UP SAMMY)
absolutely love your reviews and the unique perspective you bring to talking about albums. As a gizz fan I don't judge you for not knowing all the members, knowing two is impressive enough...I DO judge you for having never listened to them live, like what?! Big disservice to yourself! Anyways, avaa
AVAA Professor. There's been times I've listened to a new king gizzard album and walked away from it thinking it was decent, then have my mind completely blown away after hearing those very tracks live, gaining a new appreciation for them. This album however struck me immediately and I have been having a blast tapping my foot and fingers to it the entire weekend.
13:00 Thing is, if you did dive into the live performances, you would say the same as you do about The Dead; after hearing them live, the albums sound kind of 'flat', deflated of the energy. Don't deprive yourself of the enjoyment; setlists are fairly unique to each show so it's not like you're spoiling a surprise for when you do eventually make the pilgrimage.
The random dude is Sammy the Soundman. He rose to fame as the subject of Boogieman Sam and a major feature on "A brief History of Planet Earth" from Chunky Shrapnel.
Saying he "rose to fame" as the "this beer to that man" guy is kind of insulting even. He did so much more for the band, their aesthetics & image than that
I found your channel because of the Kendrick x Drake beef and holy crap I'm surprised about this video, KGLW are my favorite band in the world, so happy you're talking about them
AVAA. This album is a lot of fun. I didn’t know that the title was a pun on “being 7 for 1 purpose”. I assumed it was a reference to a very common blues chord progression. I know Stu is a music theory nerd so the double meaning makes sense
Around the 16 minute mark you articulated for me how ive always felt about Lenny Kravitz. My wife likes him and for that alone Ive wanted to also like him but never could, exactly for the reasons youve expressed here.
AVAA Professor! I was very much looking forward to your review of this album and I was not disappointed at all. The thing I love the most about this record is how simple it is, like there aren't as many typical-gizzardy tricks on here. I say this as a fan of said gizzardy-tricks, but I'm glad they're continuing to explore different sounds and different things. I feel like it'd be so easy to just churn out more albums along the lines of Nonagon Infinity, Polygondwanaland, or even the K.G and L.W albums. There is a "darkest timeline" where KGLW got comfortable and only made psych/prog-rock with the occasional genre experiment to keep up the whole "they make every type of music" thing. Thankfully, we don't live in that timeline. It really seems like they dive into different genres because they just love music and want to express that love as loudly and proudly. They may have made a lot of weird and complex music all infused with a pretty dumb and convoluted concept. However, they show that not only can you have those elements without coming across like a pretentious snob but that there is genuine artistic value in things outside of artsy experimental concept albums. I think that fans of prog and other experimental music in general should keep that second point in their head at all times, because it's so easy to get into the toxic mindset of seeing that type of music as "objectively better" than others to the point where you're dismissing whole genres of music. This is also why you're content is so important because your analysis appeals to that type of artsy and heady music fan but also that you're whole thing is that you are (almost) always positive which is not usually what you'd see in this space.
AVAA! You gotta check out the new Osees album, too. It came out on the same day as this. They're a similar band to King Gizzard but managed to release a very different album.
AVAA! This new album is so much fun! King Gizz albums, no matter the genre, are always so insanely fun and sincere! Not many bands can jump genres and not delve into parody or irony. Speaking of the greatest Jam Bands, you should check out The Mars Volta. Wasn't huge into their newest comeback album, but their classic albums from the 2000s are the only progressive rock albums that have sounded cool released in this century. They were famous for going into crazy long improv sessions during their live shows, and their studio albums really capture that magic. Two completely different styles but I feel both TMV and KGLW capture that same rock 'n' roll magic released in times when it really shouldn't exist.
The album this reminds me of most is Moby Grapes debut album (from the late 60s), and it’s also their best. The sound, the feel, the collaborative vibe.
Phish is my favorite band and these guys are number two and I really feel like they are the spiritual successor to Phish. Absolutely all over the place genre wise, which is exactly what I love. I’m going to be seeing them in Maine on the 20th. That’ll be my third time seeing them and it comes one day after I see. Phish do their festival this summer in Delaware. By the way Slift is awesome Totorro as well
awesome video. my first time watching your channel. discovered because I LOVE all things KGLW since discovering them 2 years ago. They are playing at red rocks on September 8th and 9th. I will be there on the 8th. are you going?
I saw king gizzard at red rocks on dia de los muertos in 2022. It was one of the most phenomenal experiences. They are otherworldly. Imagine high octane mathematical Grateful Dead, extending 3 minute songs into 20 minute mind fucks. They are indeed wizards. At one point in the set a shooting star shot across the sky. I thought that maybe it was just the mushrooms making the sky move funky, but just about everyone else that was there also reported seeing the supposed UFO/shooting star. Certainly was not a drone. But we all saw it. Anyways. It blows my mind you haven’t heard a single king gizzard performance. They are leagues better live.
AVAA. Fun album by the guys. Definitely appreciated it more when I heard some of the songs live. If you haven't already, you really need to check out some older Gizz.... I'm in your Mind Fuzz, Nonagon Infinity and Flying Microtonal Banana are where I got started with them and are fantastic! Or fishing for fishies....or paper mache dream balloon....or Polygonwanaland....or gumboot soup😅
Ambrose has the most identifiable voice for sure - if you are a K.G. (the album) fan, Straws in the Wind is a great example of Ambrose's singing! Joey and Stu are generally the other two singing, and I find it harder to identify between them. As you said though all of them are singing now so lot's to learn!
Professor skye, i absolutely love your videos and ive been loving this album. However, I humbly request that you retract your statement on abracadabra from a while back, my girlfriend has a vendetta towards you since then lol hope all is well with you and yours!
If you want more rock-that-isn't-post-punk in 2024, you should check out MJ Lenderman. He has a record coming out on 9/6/24, but also his 2022 album "Boat Songs" is a great example of his work thus far. His work is highly inspired by the alt-country and slowcore movements of the 90s/early 00s, but is certainly not just a recreation/nostalgia blast of those styles.
@@Tsureiki I was most familiar with their ‘22 release; but still didn’t expect them to “disband indefinitely”. They were an interesting breath of fresh air.
King Gizzard is not the kind of band that I'm immediately drawn to. Starting with the album cover and the album name, it just turned me off a little bit, seeming inaccessible. But I can imagine how fun it would be to be a fan and go to their shows. I'll try to give this one a shot, per your rec.
That’s been my life at two points. First time during their 2017 mega release era. Then their 2022 mammoth release period 🩸which my partner didn’t have coz she was up the duff 🤰🏻
Great video (AAVA).. I don't think Lenny K killed Blues Rock (he just wasn't popular enough) but I do see him being part of its long slow decline. I kind of blame record companies leaning on establish acts (like the Stones) and marketing their mediocre albums that sell on reputation alone. Record companies rely on old favorites and have little room for new or fresh takes on genres.. but I digress. KGLW is wonderful. I have always been a little bit of everything kind of guy when it comes to music but KGLW has turned me into a cult member. Studio magic AND live magic. I've been to a couple of shows over the years and they have REALLY come into their own in terms of their live performance. I first saw them in 2018 and it was fantastic but it was just a frenetic, Mad Max race through a 90 minute set. An amazing cacophony of energy and music. Now, they are full on jam band (the goat I agree) playing nuanced melodies and expansions of a huge back catalog. They played over 120 different songs in 2023. And the recordings available through them or the welcome bootleggers is really top notch. You talk about your GD tape collection but these guys are not only embracing that same ethos but bringing it into the 21st century with free live streams of their concerts and tons of free source content. But I think the most important piece of the KGLW puzzle is that they do everything with such a joy (even in the face of existential threat) that it is refreshing, captivating, and hopeful. Even if the lyrics tend towards silly. Of course I do love silly. [easily the longest comment I have ever left anywhere]
Their last album objectively sucks. At least they seem like they are having fun. As much as I liked Dropout Boogie, they feel aging too much at this point. Also Beck is bad producer, the mixing on the album is atrocious
AVAA!!! sadly couldn’t get into this one compared to some other Gizz records would love if you gave Hakushi Hasegawa’s “Mahōgakkō” a shot! In my opinion one of the most forward thinking, chaotic, and surprisingly beautiful albums i’ve heard in a long while
Second that recommendation though i would personally start with their debut "Air Ni Ni" first. Not only do i personally find that album better but i think it's a bit easier to get into
@@EzioMonty117he only really reviews new stuff but it’s def worth hearing what they did was like before they reallllyyyyy leaned into the experimentation. air ni ni’s great
Not wanting to troll at all, but I had to stop watching at 1.06 because of how much you move your head around. Maybe it's because you are so close up to the camera? Extremely distracting. Maybe it's just me.
