I always told people for example, i'd avoid twitter because it is literally just braindead fighting. Which its like if you're right sure thats great and all, but i think that its the way you handle it that makes the difference. Like is it enough to just not be wrong? No we help people by giving our two-cents, we keep clear of nonsense that pollutes our brains. Whether or not this is nonsense is for you to debate, and well if you think it is, why do you come to the channel just to rage? I don't think its healthy to look for things to be mad about, you ought to conserve your energy for something productive. Not trying to be judgemental but it's a real problem lots of people have man

I had my University thesis project reposted by some random US based "news outlet" and they essentially spun a completely fake narrative around it. A thesis project, by someone living on another continent, a project that will never see production or have any relevance to the general public. Some people out there just have a hard-on for needing to share their opinion no matter how irrelevant it may be, even if not a single soul is listening to them.

I read the original article and I think Linus and the author simply mean completely different things. For Linus, it's a fun tinkering project for people who like the process as much as the result, the author however views it as a pitch towards the average person playing video games and considers it an unreasonable thing to attempt. Because 9/10 people would rather pick cyanide than bother with everything in the video to get their games on screen.

Windows Home is free too 😂 For peripherals they also considered mouse and keyboard, which are cheaper than a PS5 dual sense either way. But both will require a display of sorts, TVs or monitors.

Not a great point. My grandma has a TV and no console. Basically, it is way more viable and accurate to state a TV is a very standard item people will have and are not included to cost of owning a console. If it were a high-end TV bought to take advantage of the console, you'd have a point.

There are entire youtube channels that just pick out a random tweet with like a couple of hundred likes and act as if it's some widely held opinion. Then an article is written about the youtube video and the article is cited on other sites as a "source". Or some variation of these things, then people can "link a source" when they put out those stupid opinions online to other people, who even if they click on the source, don't bother to check the sources validity or citations. It kind of goes beyond this though. Look at society today - Everyone talks about Efficiency of the market, letting nations with an advantage do what they have an advantage in, and focus on efficiency. But the world has had growing problems basically from the day that this became the globalized norm through what we term globalization. The people aren't benefiting - a smaller, and smaller group of ultra wealthy elites benefit: And why? What we have done - and what this article forwards and does without possibly even knowing it, is we are hiding the process. When you stop and build a chair, a table, a desk. When you take a torn pair of jeans and do a repair on it - it is a process, and the result isn't just you save money: You take something broken, and make it usable again. Or in the case of making furnature - you make a chair you enjoy sitting on, or you create a bench usable by say your grandfather when they come to visit so they have an easier time taking their shoes off at your back door. And yes you could BUY something, but when you make it - there is something special about it. What I actually love about these builds is - they are taking parts destined for a scrap heap, and breathing new life into them as something someone can use for years to come. It is going through a process that inevitably shows that these parts have value to them. That taking the time to build something has value; and it's so much less consumerist focused. And I wonder if that is why - Advertisers of certain products don't want to advertise this, because ultimately it is promoting a reduction in what amounts to wasteful consumerism. In my view, the Ad-supported model has long run it's course; it's becoming more toxic to society than beneficial - and that likely has been true for well over a decade. We need a new, better model. And we need more of this concept of taking what is old, with selective upgrades, and leveraging it for continued use - we would all be better off if we worked more in this way.

It’s $80 a year to play PlayStation online. you can recuperate that cost with a $1200 PC within six years Six years is the average lifespan of a console. the real world analogy I found entertaining and surprisingly accurate. I once had a coworker tell me that it wasn't worth it to own any tools because for the price of the tools you could hire someone to build or fix whatever was needing done. In fairness, this isn't entirely false depending on the situation, but if you buy the tools, and learn the skill, it not only allows you to fix the current issue, but many others after it. Also hiring plumbers/tradespeople is really expensive, and it doesn't take long at all to offset even large tool costs.

I have a better analogy: it’s not worth it for most people to own full-size pickups unless they regularly use them for things you *need* a truck to do. If you only actually need to tow stuff a couple times a year, you can just rent a truck from Uhaul or Home Depot for a day.

I've been using the same case for 8 years and haven't even considered changing it. It is a Phantex Enthoo Evolv, but I removed the front panel for more airflow (and I clean it every 6 months). The thing is still very clean with a few scratches on the metal panels. All the fans it came with still work too and are quiet. The only obnoxious thing about it is that it's heavy (but I don't take it anywhere other than when moving). When I did upgrade my main components (mobo, processor, etc) I actually put the new stuff in the old case and then sold all my old stuff on ebay to make some of the money back. The only thing I'm getting a little worried about is the power supply. It's even older (1000w 12 year old Seasonic). In fact, I think that might be an interesting video idea. What even is the "safe" or perhaps "makes the most sense" lifespan of a power supply? Until it breaks?
@the_undead
@the_undead 3 месяца назад
If it's a company like seasonic, I would say the safe lifespan of a power supply is however long they're warranty is because that's where the manufacturer feels comfortable saying a problem shouldn't happen in this time frame, then wants to warranty expires. That's basically the manufacturer saying you are on your own at this point and you should probably replace this product.

I would just go in to the BIOS and watch the voltages for maybe fifteen minutes. If your Seasonic (or any other power supply) is going to fail, there is almost always a lot of significant (greater than 15%) voltage fluctuation. Tolerance is 0.5% in normal operation, and anything outside of + or - 10% usually means the current and/or voltage going INTO your power supply are damaging it! That's what the Army taught me in a course, anyway, and my own experience confirms it.

Oh the point of the "DIY plumbing" analogy, I actually recall Adam Savage doing that exact video and mentioning some of the unexpected pain points, such as just how much longer and more tiring it is than you anticipate. The point is not even that Adam had that much to contribute to the plumbing industry, or public education on plumbing. I learned some things, and it provides another perspective. When someone provides their honest perspective in good faith, they should be acknowledged, not attacked for naivety, wastefulness, or whatever other cruel dismissal. The argument of "making a video about the professional plumbing" instead of being true to one's own nature reminds me of basically any depiction of humanity vs. machines, in which so much of our lives are "inefficient." As a fan of Taran's old macro videos, James's interest in ergo keyboards, and other PC-centric efficiencies, I have had to think a lot about what activities are inefficient obstacles, and what activities are worth keeping. My own projects are likely to always struggle with this balance, but I've very quickly learned when discussing them with other people that we all have a different idea of what is important. Learning and teaching can be rewarding experiences, but it's very easy to wander into judgemental territory when speaking on a subject's management of time or interests.

It's just the business leadership of AAA companies headed for self-destruction chasing the Line Go Up Forever pipe dream for the shareholders, while the development talent is increasingly taking the savings and experience earned working for the AAA industry and going indie to make the passion projects they've always wanted to make. And many, but not all, of those indie studios are coming out ahead because they're delivering a much better product than the soulless corporate slop of the AAA industry at a better price point.

Plenty of game still being made by small groups and individuals on the PC space. consoles are still more popular and phones are more popular than both of them. AAA gaming is a very very small space in the whole grand of things. They just have the biggest cut and now scrambling to keep that big cut from being diluted towards the new companies. Plus AAA games were also small that sold themselves for money. Very few games companies did not sell out, VALVE.

I also had disagreements with the PS5 video, but it was more along the lines of going that hard on something like the CPU and mobo when you can get a Skylake or comet lake workstation with case, PSU, often CPU (usually a 6 core sometimes 8 core xeon W), and sometimes even RAM for under $200 US. With storage being so cheap at this point it's not a huge concern price wise, leaving enough budget to squeeze in something in the neighborhood of a 2080. Also the not factoring in peripheral costs always annoys me from the console crowd. Sorry bruh, just lemme factor in your TV and PS+ real quick... And like Luke said game price over time

I learned so much from the crapbucket I put together and fixing it (up) and keeping it running. I have done the math over the years. It is basically 2(2.5 with SSD prices) years to break even with new parts(including peripherals, minus the monitor). That is with a PC that has about the same raw GPU grunt, but a lot more CPU power(for 1080p high refresh gaming). 1 year(1.5 with current SSD prices), with simply opting for a used GPU, and everything else new. This is all before factoring in game prices. This is just exclusively cost of hardware, and membership for the console.

And I agree. Like PC gamers are already only a fraction of all gamers, now subtract all those unwilling to build one themselves in general, then those unwilling to get stuff used with no warranties and finally those who couldn't be bothered to hunt for the bestest prices possible. Okay, but that still doesn't justify calling the project a failure. It is possible to create a machine that is competitive, some people may be willing to do it, and it is fun to at the very least watch Linus try and do things with PC's that may not be possible to do yourself for a variety of reasons. Being dismissive of videos like that is essentially dismissive of the entire channel, the notion of tinkering with your tech and exploring what's out there, which is what the core of LTT always has been.

@@maxx_2245 Even if your time is worth nothing, you live in North America and you are lucky you'll still only get comparable performance with no warranty. I personally mostly use my PC for non-gaming things so a console isn't even in the race, but if gaming is the competition (and that was the hook for the video) it simply loses, any fun or knowledge gained from building it is completely subjective. The question wasn't "can you learn something from doing your own plumbing" but "can you do better plumbing for a similar cost/hour yourself".
@thbroadway
@thbroadway 3 месяца назад
The explicit thesis was that LTT had failed to build a comparable PC for a PS5 price because console gamers won't leave their comfort zone. Console gamers are not the audience of LTT, however. LTT's intended audience (as in who videos are written for conceptually) consists of mainly PC users who look to become more knowledgeable of the wider tech landscape, and especially enthusiasts who are eager to hear about expensive solutions, and willing to try more affordable ones. LTT has been creating videos about making cheap desktop PCs for a very long time, and this PS5 vs PC video is just another one of those, equally a tutorial and a proof of concept for the console lifecycle's connections to the PC world. The writer of the article fails to acknowledge this, likely due to the size of LTT's actual audience and the fact that their own audience is mainly looking for pre-built machines. The article doesn't end up having any value to a reader looking to gain insight on the video or the creator of the video, instead serving as some declared victory over DIY mentalities in gaming, done in far too many words to earn keep.

I remember in my youth running pcs from the motherboard-box since I lacked the money to get a case. I learned build pcs when I was around 7-8 years old ... it's no that hard. But from the standpoint of people that are only buying new pcs for the next iteration of call-of-duty, I can see his point ... a bit. You know those people, the ones that fall for "Higher-number is better"-nvidia-shenanigans, because they see a pc as not much more as a means to an end.

If you can i would always recommend building your own PC’s. Though i regret that my next one i will probably have to have someone else build it because with my eyesight glasses don’t really help with fine details and i dont have the dexterity in my hands anymore to feel that comfortable doing it.

I had a quick read through the article and I swear some of it feels like it's written by an AI. It's definitely been edited by a real person but I can't help but feel that they let the AI come up with the conclusion
