Why Everyone HATED Scholar in Final Fantasy XIV 

The amount of satisfaction I felt as a SCH main pre-EW when I was seeing all the hate just going "They don't even know, we're about to be the strongest, they DON'T know", played SCH for EW playthrough and it did not disappoint... Well, the animations did but the power didn't lol. I do miss pre ShB SCH and AST though, we lost a lot of uniqueness but we're still strong. Here's hoping Dawn Trail breaks the homogenization trend.

SCH has its issues, but they're IMO overblown. Expedience is super strong for prog, and 20s mit is still great on reclears. Moreover, Deployment Tactics is one of THE strongest tools in any content with heavy damage. If I wanted to hard carry a group, I'd pick SCH over SGE all day every day. It arguably feels a bit more clunky than SGE, but so much of the issue lies in DPS simplification and healer homogenization. Adjustments I'd make to the job moving forward: - Allow use of Aetherpact and Fey Blessing while Seraph is active. - One second before Seraph is dismissed, have it automatically cast Consolation if available. - Revert Fey Blessing to use the Fairy Gauge. - Add a new trait that upgrades Energy Drain into an AoE. - And, if we're shooting for the moon here: add one additional DoT.

I miss stormblood healing, like how AST really took alot more thinking on who and when to give cards.

Back in 2.0, Titan was considered one of the hardest fights in the relic quest line. I saw a SCH solo heal the entire fight when the WHM fell off from an early landslide. That made me want to learn and play SCH when it came to healing, even now with the move changes. Too bad about losing the fairy differences and party-wide esuna though, but Broil is nice.

stormblood was my first expansion and sch was my first class and i played it trough all of it. i miss it so much you could use your pet abilities outside your gcd and you could also target your pet for shields or heals. you could even do a critlo on your pet and use it for an adlo spread without you or anyone around it and also critical adlos were way more powerful than just "2 different shields" whenever you crit. it was really really more engaging to play and a truly solid and unique healer back then.

i main scholar and i rememeber the beginning of the expansion i had friends wanting me to go sage instead and i was super adamant about not doing that and now i still hear it a little bit but most tell me they prefer having a scholar lol

When SGE came out, I was never concerned about it replacing SCH. I came to understand that each shield healer would have their advantage and disadvantages. SCH has stronger shields but have to deal with casting while SGE is faster at shielding but they tend to be slightly weaker. I do miss the complexity that SCH had before ShB. People say SCH is hard now but I don't feel many people had played it before the kit was gutted. I enjoyed going between dps and healing. Now I just feel like.... It's hard to explain but I think the vid pointed it out perfectly: it feels less interactive.

It really makes me sad seeing how much they've cucked scholar over the years. It's not about it being clunky or outdated, it always felt that way compared to WHM. It's about how much it has lost. Between all of the pre-shadowbringers eras and more recently playing FFXI again it really made me see that this job has lost so much more than any other class has in the name of QoL, as well as losing even more because of their unwillingness to revamp pet code to make it more responsive and actually utilize it instead of trying to phase it out entirely. If they had put the same effort into reworking pets as they have into reworking the entire SMN kit every expansion they'd be in a great state by now. But yeah... I desperately want manual Eos healing back as well as shadowflare and more DoTs. It still amazes me that they think it's more fun to spam art of war than to have shadowflare and miasma 2. Not that the other healers have it much better in terms of damage. For the love of god give us a more involved damage loop.

I was a Scholar main since ARR and switched to Sage in EW after I just couldn't bear it anymore. Scholar has never been weak, it will never be weak, it's probably the most consistently OP job in this game. Switching to Sage for me was just a matter of preference. For me, the problem is with the Healer role in general. Healing is a very binary thing. You either heal enough or you don't. Having so many healing actions creates a gigantic rift between good healers and bad healers. So the healing requirements for casual content are incredibly low. I often run out of MP as a Sage because I never need to use my heals. Really good tanks don't even need a healer when they pull wall to wall. So, outside of hardcore content, you don't get to play the game unless your game is called Broil/Art of War Clicker. Heck, that's sometimes even the case in Savage fights. I can eat my food and just spam Broil/Dosis without any damage loss. There are even Ultimates being cleared without a healer. While I agree with you that the Scholar is not as clunky as it used to be, there is still a big level of frustration because you are constantly locked out of your tools. Seraph disables the jump rope, Fey Blessing and Dissipation. Dissipation disables all fairy actions. Fairy actions cancel the jump rope. Your fairy leaves if you run too far. You have to resummon your fairy after you die. The Fairy Gauge is empty when you pull, so you can't use the jump rope until later in the fight. These are problems unique to Scholars. And you can't just "learn the fight" to avoid this. People will make mistakes and as a Healer it's your job to make them survive. And when you are locked out of the tool you need, it gets frustrating really fast. With every new fairy action, the Scholar gets more frustrating to play. All the other healers don't have this problem. That's why I switched to Sage. But I also understand Scholar mains that take these frustrating mechanics and draw their joy out of mastering them. The skill ceiling for Scholar is still high and some people like putting in the work. I really REALLY hope that healers get some of their juice back. We don't need to return to "I have 5 DoTs with low duration and can't heal for 10 seconds when I use Cleric Stance" times. But I really hope that every healer gets something to do when there is no damage coming in. My hopes are especially high for Sages as "healing while dealing damage" is supposed to be their schtick. Sorry for the long comment! I really liked your video and I am happy that you can still find joy in playing a Scholar.

I’ve never understood the battle peloton hate

Sage has some neat tools and more challenge associated with it's healing, but Scholar is just strong. It's design foibles aside, it just has such a great toolkit of strong healing, buffing, and mitigation tools.

the issue I have with scholar is that it's missing something. like an aoe dot, or more than one way to apply big aoe shields, or maybe a better use for the faerie gauge. the job itself is not weak, no job in this game is obsolete, but when you look at every other job scholar is the one whose kit is a bit too streamlined for me. even warrior has more going on. also scholar visual skill effects need to be bumped up by 10!

You know, I love the job split with multiple roles emerging from one class. I'm also really fond of pet classs! Unfortunately a certain Black Mage-maining head of development Hates both of those concepts

I'm an outlier, but I miss ARR SCH. I'm probably one of very few dedicated SCH mains that cleared OG Coils (Yes, release turn 5 and the subsequesnt savages) in their entirety. Eos/Selene had hp and had to be micromanaged on their locations and spacing constantly and we had an amazing single target dps rotation where you micromanaged 4 dots (Bio, Miasma, Shadowflare and Thunder) and melee'd with your book that set us well above WHM dps (almost double!). I'm actually very surprised at how many fights and their mechanics basically don't matter at all or are completely trivialized even in the very stripped back level 50/60 kits. Some times I'm sad about it, but hey now I can play reaper I guess?

I was very much laughing about Scholar sucking in Endwalker. I never even tried it until 3 months into Endwalker despite starting out in Stormblood. I know its not what it was back in the day, but i almost instantly fell in love with Scholar. It felt like easy mode to play. Literally a Scholar main now.

SCH was my first job and made me love healing in general

I like that you touched on faerie ghosting and the AI changes. It's been so nice that sch received changes that improved shield application delays and faerie responsive really was improved a lot. But even with improvements scholar still does have a delay on aoe shielding OGCD such as seraph to the point where utilizing seraph optimally in some encounters like p8s phase 2 would frequently result in ghosting on shield application not getting snap-shotted in time for an aoe. If any issue is to be talked about for scholar it is those, those most frustrating of problems.

I honestly roll my eyes whenever people bring up AST cards all being simplified to just buff damage. People ONLY ever used The Balance back then, simply because it buffed damage output. The other cards had their uses, obviously, but that didn’t make it very good when those uses were super situational. Players would just continually draw until they got The Balance, meaning every other card simply didn’t matter.

At first I hated SCH because I felt like I was doing all the job ( I was main WHM) , then decided to try it to prove it was a bad job. I ended up bringing to savage and extremes. ( which is to say that I didnt drop it the moment i hit max lvl) Then the truth dawned on me: It's not SCH that sucks but the people playing it.

When 2.0 launched, SCH initially baffled me, as someone who WHM'd in 1.x (ya know, since it was the only healer). Once I actually tried it, it quickly became one of my favorite classes and remains so to this day. I don't usually ride the hate train for job changes, and I try to roll with the punches, so I wasn't worried at the, uh...lackluster prospects revealed in the EW job action trailer and related media. Thankfully, it really was nothing to worry about at all, and I still love the job. Now, do I miss the pre-ShB toolkit and such? Of course. There was a time back when you had Cleric Stance that I could easily make the tank invincible, switch to DPS mode, drop Shadow Flare, DoT something, Bane it, and do so much damage over time that I was out-DPSing the DPS a good amount of the time. That's a great feeling, especially coming from a class you wouldn't expect that from. Of course, having fairy-specific skills was also great. Party-wide Esuna with Fey Caress? Speed buff with Fey Wind? Healer INTERRUPTS?!??! Yes, please! If some of the abilities that were lost made a comeback in DT, I would be thrilled, though I'm not going to bank on it. I mean, remember when SCH lost Miasma II, then it came back as a direct damage AoE? Or when they took away Energy Drain, then brought it back out of the blue? It seems so random when these changes get made, and why... But regardless, I'm sure that I will still love SCH in coming content.

It's weird that you like the choice of shadow flare / sacred soil or the choice of energy drain / lustrate but don't like the choice of faerie abilities / seraph cooldowns

i switched over to sch from whm towards the end of shb (before post shb stuff). it was interesting learning how to sch at first but i made it work al the way until early ew before i switched to sage. for me, it seems that sch has the stronger shields, white sge has faster casting of their skills.

I was mentally preparing myself to be a SCH since I heard it was not very liked, only to find out that maxing out SMN also maxes out SCH. Not sure if I should be relieved or disappointed lol.

It's just been fun picking up jobs that thematically match my headcanon for each expansion, and with the New World theme I hope to see bunch of Scholars out in the wild taking notes!

I mean ... I never really played SCH since I'm a SMN main, so when I hit 90 on one it gave me the other free as well, I had only played magic casters (SMN, BLM, RDM, and BLU) before EW ... I should try it as I'm enjoying healing (been playing AST recently helping a firend level)

Whew...I miss HW Sch every single time I think about returning. StB made me quit SCH and play the other two healers to their max. Then I realized that healers are so homogenized that I was pushing the same buttons on different jobs and it broke me. Maybe one day healing will be fun, but it just won't return for me without fun like keeping up dots in Cleric Stance while micro'ing Eos until I needed to return flip the switch back into full healer mode. The stance dancing for healers was fun for me and added a layer of thinking that was needed to keep encounters fresh. HW SCH is what felt the best for me.

As a sage main this tier nothing is better than casting Zoe and shielding than to just have a scholar overwrite it like nothing

Im hoping for an upgraded Energy Drain for more dps gain at the cost of Aetherflow or just a new dps button to match WHM lilies...tanks have gotten so strong i find myself holding onto at least 2 stacks and if my cohealer is good im never using my stacks excelt for Sacred Soils. They should add charges to Aetheflow or give us a worth while dps option to spend stacks on... they should do the same for the other healers as well. Way too often do you find yourself with resources you dont need it'll be nice to have a use for those excess stacks/charges instead if watching it sit there

I have seen this job played well in 4 men and 8 person and larger runs. . the player had no problem with it,

SCH was never weak, the real problem is how bad gameplay wise is the fairy. Fairy gauge is basically useless. Fairy sometimes still take SECONDS to cast skills. Seraph is a joke, she should boost fairy skills but for some reason she just locks you from using FeyBlessing. But what made me really sad is YoshiP saying that "With the scholar there wasn't really much we would have changed, like, significantly." Fairy should be the core of the class, but in reality she's is just tossed aside as an extra skill.

I love Scholar in pve and pvp. Been playing for 9 years now. The only thing they need back is shadow Flare. It's easy to play and I can take naps while I heal and spam two attacks.

Bring back Heavensward-era job iterations. HW was pinnacle FFXIV not just in job gameplay, but in difficulty and content.

I loved in Scholar in stormblood. It sold me on this fantasy of a magic-powered accountant, and it was awesome. Until ShB utterly fucked the job. I remember being in the angry crowd as well leading up to EW, "You ruined my favourite job, and you think a 'combat peloton' is going to make it better!? I don't want your stupid Peloton, I want you to fix it!" The Healer gameplay sucks right now. ShB turned every single healer into WHM with extra steps, and WHM was always a really boring healer. I really wish they'd address it with Dawntrail. But I don't expect them to address anything, in fact I fully expect them to quadruple down on further homogenising everything even further. I hate the homogenisation; what even is the point of having all these jobs if they're just glamours that play identically? I hate the way the design is trending. And my hate of it has been festering into apathy for years now. I've committed to trying 7.0 during a free login or two to see how the gameplay's changed. But at this point, I kind of expect EW to be my last expansion.

I really miss the old scolar, but I still stay faithfull

I used to be a scholar main in Storm blood. . . I have tried to raid with scholar in EW but it just doesn't feel good to me even if class is supposedly fine. I just switched to Sage which I find a lot more fun and the rewards for mastering it feels really good in comparison. Seriously give Scholar Shadowflare back at the very least, that would make it so much more dynamic in dungeons and raids to use, if SGE gets a big boom button twice then SCH deserves to get back at the very very least Shadowflare.

I loved scholar hated playing them this expansion, but one of the major problems with the the fair is actually the net code. some people are playing with 200+ ping and others are on 50, and it makes any kind of comands inconsistent at best. you cant trust her :(

i kinda feel like the entire community would complain constantly about the odd buff timing windows all the time at one point so the developers change everything to 2 mins and 1 min. then they complained again about everything “feeling similar”. i wonder why… even yoshi recently said that the communtiy has to agree on what they want lol. ffxiv community made this bed themselves. now they have to lie in it.

I main SCH for the aesthetics, but I definitely do agree that they're by far the clunkiest healer. My main gripe with them is the jump rope (aetherpact) which I assume is supposed to be a big part of the class considering it has its own gauge, but it just doesn't do much. It takes ages to build up, doesn't heal anything immediately when you press the button (so any healing it would do is often sniped), keeps spending resources even when it doesn't actually heal anything, doesn't build when your fairy is dissipated, stops the fairy from casting embrace and for what? A 120 potency increase over embrace? The fairy focus healing the target? Assuming it counts as pet healing it's only effectively ~255 potency too, or ~102 potency if you discount the potency of embrace. I sincerely hope they rework or replace it come Dawntrail.

I do miss the old cards from ast, but on the flip side they got godly mp regen.

Gameplaywise, ShB was the Cataclysm of XIV. The writing was on the wall. I tried to warn them, but nobody listened.

People thinkin expediant would suck had no experience whatsoever in pve. Sure it sound underwhelming but there was a precedent with WoW which is less positional than ffxiv and still the movespeed increase abilities where bonkers and core to a lot of strategies. "lmao run faster" button is bis for progression raiding.

Sch has always been fun even in the 2.0 days. Yes it does feel better (Faster pet reaction is very handy) but otherall its always been fun to play and imo so much better then say Astro and the random rng card mechanic.

Expedient is one of my favorite SCH abilities, and everybody who dogged it is a silly.

The only reason my Scholar is maxed is because it's linked to Summoner. I never take it anywhere but Frontlines, and that's rare. Astro has been my healer since Heavenward, and I miss the old Stormblood version. Give me back my Sects!

I will defend the AST changes because like, we spent 85% of the time fishing for the Balance anyway and while I lament the loss of Nocturnal Sect, Dirunal was always the most popular and most powerful. But yeah I have been a SCH main since ARR and we'll just say I'm not terribly happy with how the job has been handled since HW on. I didn't even like it in SB. I always go back to it because my character is a nerdy archeologist and the SCH aesthetic fits that so well. I have actually found my joy in SCH again after like, a year of sitting with it in EW (in fairness, this always happens) I think my only gripes is that I wish Recitation made Aldo/Succor insta-cast and I wish Seraph was just an upgrade and not a separate summon, it would make using Consolation a lot easier and could act as SCH's response to Haima/Panhaima.

It's always funny because with my FC every expansion we joke about how underwhelming SCH is going to look in the job actions trailer, while perfectly knowing it's going to be the strongest healer. It always happens.

I have played Scholar so long that any other healer feels like pure pain... Mostly since I've gotten to the point where my SCH barely needs to do much more to heal than use Excog whenever its off cooldown.

I love SCH but my issue is that they made it a spell futuristic class. I like the old version that was more spellbinding and pet class.

The job definitely feels the most polished it ever has, but at the same time it lost everything unique about it in the process considering that the job has significant ability overlap with sage and lost things like it’s DoT identity, shadow flare etc.

For me it was because no one who played sch knew how to play it and i hated being pit with a sch but when i tried sch myself i loved it people just dont know how to play it.

I can say i did see a lot less scholars since endwalker launch.

SCH during the stormblood era was amazing. Back then, ppl would urge new healers to play WHM and avoid SCH, however this was backwards for me. WHM would have me tunnel out, missing important cues in the fight, and even outright forgetting to heal tanks at times. SCH had just enough going on to let me manage the chaos. Definitely miss it. I absolutely despised the Shadowbringers healer changes, by this point, i loved having huge numbers on the large pulls (this is one of the things that eventually made WHM appealing) and the nerfs to the aoe's , and having to apply regens twice as often was just annoying to me. Having said that, i don't think SCH is in a bad place right now, but SGE is definitely winning me over!

To be honest, I tried SGE for a short bit, just to see how it compared to SCH, and I honestly haven't a clue why people like it, unless they like pressing a lot of buttons for things that SCH can do for one button.

sch fairy still does have a huge delay when casting back to back (even with a gcd cast between them) the fairy changes were great overall, but the progression of sch from patch to patch showed sch overall improving from 2.0 to 3.0 and then again to 4.0. the shadow bringers changes mostly ruined how the job felt with the only real improvements since being that the fairy is a bit more responsive. dont get me wrong i love sch and i have since arr launched, but shadow bringers and endwalker changes have been 2 steps back for the sch and 1 step foreward for the fairy(sorta, fairy used to be a lot stronger in general than it is now it just didn't respond to player commands very well)

my biggest issue with SCH: 1, PET AI and delay 2, Optimization: in optimized plays, you almost never Crit shield, rather youd Crit heal; Expedia is also useless, and you do not have dmg even or gain filler for movements. 2.1, for optimize dps gain, youd calculate eating faeries for dmg, but it pretty much 90% of the parties including lots statics you cannot achive it.

you completed skipped the removal of energy drain in shadowbringers. A change that was good for the job and raiding scene but the community threw such a fit that they brought it back. Scholar did need it's aether flow re-examined after such a change, much like summoner's was, but instead of that the community just wanted energy drain back because they couldn't possibly be bothered to use their aetherflow on healing abilities. Playing in party finder in endwalker has really shown how you can't trust scholars with aetherflow when one of the options is dps too. They just use everything on ED even if someone will die for it.

I used to main scholar and did a shit ton of damage as well as healing. I seriously would get every player com.

Imagine telling a WoW raider "Hey, hey, get this. Two FF14 healers are getting new abilities. One of them is Stampeding Roar, except it lasts longer and provides damage mitigation. The other is Lightwell. AND THEY THINK THE ONE WITH STAMPEDING ROAR GOT SHAFTED!" They will laugh you out of the fucking room. I was telling everybody this back at the start of Endwalker and nobody believed me. It was just because Expedient is one of the least flashy moves in the game, that's all anybody cared about.

Nah, As much as I loved the utiliy from Expedient what I hated and still hate about healers is the mind numbing 1 button gameplay. A 2 minute oGCD ability while appreciated, does nothing to tackle the emptiness that is the moment to moment healer Gameplay.

I yearn for my scholar main days of HW/SB. I still like my Astro but it hurts how gutted it became just to be forced into the fun little white mage box. Oh, and I guess we have cards still. Barely. I should relearn Scholar.

i dunno, white mage seems to love waiting until 0.1% before healing a tank. making me pop living dead every time. white mage is my least liked healer.

I played SCH from HW up to EW. I loved SCH and SHB was frustrating but I stuck it out because SCH has always been an extremely powerful class for those that are good at memorizing fight progression. But I stopped playing in EW, I know Expedient is really good, I know that the class is a lot smoother than it's ever been. But I also leveled the other healers and the amount of synergy that they have in their kit is just leagues above what SCH is capable of, the Fairy Guage is pointless it only interacts with like 2 skills, trading damage for healing doesn't feel great when every other healer can just do both, and being locked out of your kit while doing your "ultimate" ability is frustrating. For as smooth as SCH plays it still feels clunky to me. I don't necessarily think the class has ever been bad, far from it, I just don't feel the fun I used to feel when I played it through HW and StB. To be fair, none of the healers really tickle my fancy right now, I've mostly been focusing on Ninja and Machinist, but I hope that they can build SCH back into something fun and maybe work on strengthening the class fantasy of a strategist.

everyone crapped on stormblood for the story only and 100% glossed over the content, job balance, and overall quality of the expansion. shadowbringers shot job complexity and fun in the foot and now the game is just meh. i dont really have any hopes for dawntrail, maybe the pirate class will be cool, but it'll probably be some reiteration of a pre-existing job without doing anything new.

I don't know if "hated" Is really the point here. No one ever HATED that job, people simply were sad to watch their favorite Job being dismembered. Not only from DMG or shield/heals output but for the very single thing that made SCH great! Fairy and management. I remember having macros to tell Eos/Selene to heal the player selected with my combined physics, where you could have situational fairies too. Back in the day if you used Selene? You knew what you were doing and didn't need to rely on Eos healing pool for your group to survive. You used the tools right, CDs and all in a symphony like a knowledgeable tactician (which made sense cause SCHOLAR). It felt right to succeed with a SCH, while some found it too hard to balance and would rather just be WHM. They took all that away, and SCH lost its flair, its uniqueness. If anything, it wasn't hated, it was loved, and they simply took what we loved away.

Healing is boring as fuck now. You have two damage buttons and multiple healing spells that are redundant. If you want more people to heal then give healers some fucking gameplay

I think scholar hate is at this point just a test, if you do not understand its a meme to hate on sch and legit think it's bad we know you're not very good at the game because scholar is one of the strongest classes around lmfao. The reason it has barely changed the last few years is because it's in a great place especially after they fixed the fairie ai . When people laugh at expedient i can't take them seriously, that shit is so damn strong in raids lmfao. Was scholar main for 2 tiers, am blm this tier but sch will always have a place in my heart. Scholars are associates with Tonberries. Because of their lore and relation to ancient Nymea. Tonberries are my favourite creature in all of Final Fantasy. So Scholar was a no brainer, and JFC It was so much more fun than even my White Mage. Im not a huge fan of Sage.

Sch not being changed was great. It mean they didn't samurai the job into a worst version from shb, then kicked it again while it was down in another patch.

We need shadow flare back lol. As for ast I'm ok with the nrw card system as I hated looking at what it is I just span it on dps and move on

They need to make blue mage a real job I don't care about the logistics or how it'll fuck up the entire meta of PVP. In this situation the consequences do not outweigh

I seriously don't get why people think it's bad that the fairy delays it's cast. The skill is instant as your giving an instruction to the fairy, the fairy hears, acknowledges, and performs at its soonest opportunity. People want a pet class but they want the pet be as if they are the player. The fairy isn't a player, it's an entity outside the player.

The jobs were nerfed to accommodate the low skill of the community, who compliained (to high hell) whenever they are criticized for playing poorly. Other things about XIV *(mainly its ToS)* were changed for this reason btw, not just class design. I want you to understand that the Tumblr community essentially hijacked the XIV community when Tumblr was taken down for CP (there are *TONS* of Lalaphiles in XIV btw).

I always have loved Scholar and always will love Scholar.
