Actually, I wouldn't agree. Look at it another way, this is essentially a slap to the face of their most reliable customers. While you may keep a lot of low spenders, you will be losing the people who kept the game going for this long. And even if some stay, its not a good deal for them. Me included sadly... Its almost like Warframe decides to do a 2, and everyone loses every cosmetic... It would make no sense. Especially for a 2 that seems like a reskin.

Several things noted to keep in mind despite the current footage of smite 1 that was shown, is actually the graphical limit of UE3. If you go back much further to alpha smite you’ll see how much worse the game did look. The company really did an impressive job pushing the limit of ue3 for over 10 years. Also regarding some skins as well, they said in the current year they have cross gen skins they made that will transfer to smite 2 once you buy them this year. Them using ue5 was a major step in fixing up a game that was run on shabby code 11 years ago. I’m a long time smite player and I couldn’t be more optimistic for the future of the game myself.

The thing im most worried about and what no one seems to talk about is monetization. Anyone that has played smite for a couple hours knows how fucking money hungry smite is, It has so much fucking events and things going on where you can spend money that you don't eve have space on the menu. That is one of the reasons I stopped playing, When I compare LoL to Smite it's just unfair, in Smite you get pennies for playing while in LoL you can get any skin for free pretty consistently just by getting chests and/or rerolling skins. I just hope it really does well and helps the game do better in long term so Hi-Rez doesn't turn the game in a fucking shop simulator with some gameplay inside because I do really prefer smite, and the thematic is obviously better in every way with mythologic gods and heroes.

Some skins not only are cosmetic but have different effects. Kukulkan and Chaac have skins where everytime you use an Ultimate the skin changes to a different model and all of the sfx like change as well. That's significantly different from how any other skins work and going from one engine to another already has problems and re-rigging the skins to new animations is gonna take time because you don't just press a button and its ported. You have to play test and make sure the skin doesn't break on the rig or that the game doesn't bug out while trying to integrate them. Not to mention the stark contrast between lower poly and the new models might not look so great

@@TotalAlchemy I think it’s mix between developer support and player retention, two of Smite’s biggest weaknesses. A modern engine (plus a rewrite of the game’s logic) means they’ll be able to release more advanced features much faster. Right now they say that Smite is full of spaghetti code, and changes are difficult to make. Also, new players will be more inclined to stay if the game looks like it was built in 2024 rather than 2015.

As opposed to cod, every skin in smite have special effect that need to be made. It's not just a coat of paint that need to be put on something like a gun, but shader, vfx, and more that need to be remade for every single skin. For example you have character A that does a green ray as an attack, but his skin might turn it ray into running dogs. idk. @@kristofen5741 league uses its own custom engine that the developers are very familiar with, and cs2 is applying a flat texture to an existing model, not creating new models with their own code. Both of these examples are extremely disingenuous. Smites skins have their own models and animations, along with code that allows them to work (think flowing fabric which the original engine can't do automatically) not only that but they all also have completely unique ability visual effects and those also need to be completely redone in order to import into the updated look. Unreal 3 and Unreal 5 don't even use the same coding language, so you can't even just simply copy paste the old ones into the new engine and change it later. No matter what way you shake it, it's simply not an option realistically.

I have spent hundreds on Smite, probably one of my favorite games. The game has always (since alpha I believe) a $20 "god pack" that was a one time purchase that unlocked every future God release on release day. The fact that they did not end date the God Pack and force people to start money to unlock new characters at any point is amazing. The founders pack for the game will probably be $30? and you will get a 1:1 ratio for every gem you've spent (including the free gems that you could earn in game). For a free to play game I believe this is a super good value IMO. My hope is that there will be a god pack as well for Smite 2.

@@Jiub_SN The problem is that your old gems will turn into legacy gems. And you cannot buy something with legacy gems, only "half" of something. So if there is a new god pass, you will still need to pay half of its price with "new" gems. And I think it's the biggest bummer with legacy gems: you still have to pay for things (i assume that it will be hard to get gems for free at the start of smite 2), and you are pushed to buy because you have this --50% that is proportional to what you bought before. For example if you puth 1000$ in smite 1, you will have to pay another 1000$ in smite 2 (for a total of 2000$ on skins) to see the full value of what you spent in smite 1

or, you know, do both? there is little excuse to not just have the skins in smite 2 aswell, even if it takes a bit of time and money. its not like they are actually making a whole new game. they just remake the game in a new version of the engine. all the heroes/skills, design ideas etc. are already there. not having the majority of skins transfer over is just lazy, or greedy, or both. look at PoE2, which is an infinitely more complex game and where the technical difference between the games is way bigger. they made sure all the money people put into the game to support development is carrying over into the new game. including even the oldest of micro transaction. also the 246 person-years is a complete lie, that number is off by a factor of like 100. give me 1/10 of that in salary for a year and i do it solo, while i go on vacation for half of that year.

Kinda ridiculous to graphically update your game, take away everyones items, and tell them its ok we refunded your in game currency and you can use them to pay for 50% of future items. I agree, it'd be difficult for them to port over all the skins, I don't think they should port over all the skins. I think they should do the bare minimum and not do something this scummy only because it's technically not illegal lol. If they never titled this as Smite 2 and a year from now just major updated the game by upgrading the engine and doing all the big changes they plan on doing what they'd be doing right now would be illegal, so why are boot lickers ok with them doing it simply because they put a 2 next to its name lol.

@@Shadowh8ter I don't think you understand the actual implications of the 50% gem stuff. Transferring EVERY PURCHASE that you have bought into the legacy gem system means that every veteran that has played for a long, long time (myself included) has like 50k gems or something (lowball). The founder's pack, which we are all almost certainly going to buy, is going to double that. I would have 100k gems in this scenario. If you allowed me to purchase skins 1:1 with legacy gems, that would mean that the company earns 0 profit off of veterans, period. I would literally be able to buy skins for the next 2 years probably. And these skins are brand new and would be impossible to make in UE3. That is an insanely absurd ask my guy. Smite is in such a unique position like idk if any game has ever even done this before to this extent, but this is 100% a example of customers being the problem and not the other way around. They have been completely and openly transparent about how everything is going to work, they published a 1 hour video of them talking about UE5 and the transition and have done multiple interviews. It sucks for both parties, but the people who are wanting a full reimbursement for 10 years worth of cosmetics that they got mileage out of is absolutely insane. Listen I loved Smite, I dedicated years to it, I have friends that I've known for a decade from it. I have people I consider family across the world that I met from this game and we still meet regularly. We wished they updated Smite a bit earlier, even tho my golden time with the game is gone there is one part of HiRez that always got kudos. Their art team, I have no doubt that over the life span of Smite 2 they will come out with greater art work and try to reiterate some old skins as special bonuses over the patching process, for free. I wish nothing but the best for this game and the people that still play it. The people bitching about skins will never stop bitching about skins, they bitched about skins in Smite 1 and theyll do the same in Smite 2.
@invertfriend

First off, I highly doubt they will give those skins out to players for free, maybe a tiny handful of them. It is definitely not ok to take your money and then remake the game and tell you "well, better buy it all again", which is exactly what this is, but alas, I don't play Smite, I have like 2 skins on there. Lastly, The issue that Smite had, has and probably always will have, is that it simply isn't as established as League of Legends of even Dota 2. Those games are simply too big, they can't beat them. If they don't come up with something insane that will draw in all the players, then the game will be just as dead as Smite 1 is. It doesn't really do the game any favors that it plays in 3rd person, because, even though it's cool and fun, it is not what player of other MOBAs are used to and they won't try to adapt to something very different, if they can just continue playing the game they already are.

Quite funny, seeing two people who have no idea what they're talking about, talk about how you can't transfer the models from one engine to another. Here's the truth: You can, those models are in a particular format, kind of like images are .png, .jpeg, etc. so too are the 3D models. IF the new engine doesn't support the older format, you just add those few lines of code to add the support or you convert the models into a different format. But if they're the same engine just a different version, I would say that there's a HIGH probability that the new version still supports the 3D model formats from the previous version. Game Engine developers would have to deliberately remove the support for the specific 3D model format for that to be a tiny issue, which can be solved using methods I mentioned before. I don't know and don't claim to know why the Smite developers decided to do this. BUT, here's A solution which would be much better received by the community: You upgrade Smite (the first one) to UE5 and of course move all the purchases that the players have made to it. There's is no reason why Smite 2 should exist, ESPECIALLY since Smite (the first one) is basically a live-service game, it wasn't just released many years ago and then the development of the game stopped, it was constantly being maintained. An incredible example of this is League of Legends, did they ever release LoL2? No, because the players would hate it, and guess what, you're making the game for the players (generally). Bolder's Gate 3 doesn't have all of the modern day game monetization bullshit, because they care about the players, because they themselves are the players and they know that the players would hate it. People are, probably, angry because they though that they were, legally speaking, the owners of those skins and now that the reality hit them, they feel robbed. As they should, imagine you buy a Tesla car but then when Elon releases a new version of it, your Tesla turns on auto pilot and drives away back to Tesla or into some river, so that if you want to have a Tesla car again you need to buy it again. I understand that, here we're talking about digital images, but a transaction still happened. Regardless of what you bought, there was a contract. I'm not a lawyer, so use your own mind. But I would love to see someone sue the company so that there would be a president as to if such behaviour from companies is actually legal or not. Don't get me wrong, I don't spend money on digital pictures or whatever the games push. Also, most of the skins weren't released on the game's launch day, so many of them look pretty good even for today's standards. The source video feels more like a free-to-play (someone who doesn't spend real money in games) person (which I am as well) shitting on those that have spend the money to buy the skins (and if they know it or not, support the developers and the development of the game, which in this game's case is needed, since the game is Free to Play. lol, I've basically written a whole video. :D

The real problem isn’t that 1600 skins are going to be missing. The point is LIMITED RARE AND EXCLUSIVE skins that you CAN NOT GET EVER AGAIN aren’t going to be ported over. Some of these skins you would legitimately have to buy 100$ worth of content to unlock in events that are GONE. The devs have already confirmed they won’t be ported over. Both videos completely miss the entire point and just focus on the small minority that’s cries about nonsense. Smite 2 is going to be dead on arrival not because they aren’t porting over 1600 skins but because limited skins from the CLOSED BETA aren’t going to be ported. We literally built this game up and we’re the SOLE reason this game even exists yet everything we’ve spent on these limited never released again skins is just gone. Also, keep in mind smite 1 is no longer getting any new god releases and is rarely going to get any updates. They’ve already confirmed this. Their new focus is on smite 2. So yea, we have a right to feel scammed. It wouldn’t be as bad if smite 2 was a NEW game but it’s literally just smite 1 with a new coat of paint. It wouldn’t be a problem at all if they ported the limited and truly exclusive skins or made them available for everyone to purchase. I’m sure no one would be complaining if they added them for purchase.

I have thousands of hours in Smite across console and PC, over the course of that time I’ve brought and/or earned a lot of skins, some of which are “limited” which can never be attained again after they are no longer acquirable, they’re given this special status by the developers to give you a higher sense of value and create FOMO. I understand both arguments here, I think the main issue lies in the fact that this isn’t really a sequel in a series of games, it’s just a graphical overhaul, there’s zero content in the trailer for Smite 2 that is new other than higher fidelity graphics, I think if they showed an enormous leap of innovation between Smite 1 and Smite 2 then we wouldn’t be having this conversation and nobody would care but there really isn’t much difference.

As a Smite player but never spent money on the game, I understand both sides. The labor to port or remodel all the skin would be massive. 1600 different skins is a lot. Then you have people who have played the game for nearly a decade. Some bought the skins or earned them through play time. To have those removed equates to disregarding their time and money. It's a rough situation with no easy outs. Even the 50% off feels like it's not enough. Even if Hi-Rez decided to make the remade skins free to those who had them, that's a drain on money and probably those skins would be pushed back for newer skins. I personally don't know how I feel about it.

My only issue would be about legacy gems, like they sound positive, but there's no guarantee they won't just increase the base price of skins, so that "50%" discount doesn't eat into their profits. An example would be X skin would originally cost $10, but we will double it to $20, because we added legacy gems that give 50% discount. This practice is pretty common in other industries and sometimes in games, so that's my only real concern about how legacy gems could affect pricing.

Veterans lose 99% of the skins they've owned and paid for. I think the issue comes down to the fact that, so far, the implication is that the skins that you did purchase in Smite 1 that might be ported to Smite 2 are ONLY 50% off even though you already owned them previously. That is what pisses people off, that they would have to essentially re-buy skins that they'd already spent money on, or spent hours of gameplay on earning (especially the animated ones called T5 skins). I've never spent money on skins, though, and all the skins I received were from playing the game and getting gems from events, so I don't have much rage to add to that ballpark. The thing that has most potential to annoy me as a long-term Smite player, is that in Smite you can buy something called an "ultimate god pass" that lets you play and access every single god that has been released and will be released. If you have that pass, I have yet to see any info on a player still retaining that, meaning you might have to buy that again too, which I have an issue with. Especially since, as far as I am aware, most of the gods that will be released for the first year are going to be gods that have already been released - there won't be anything new until they've caught up. If they were to somehow be able to give back access to the point that Smite 1 is at, and THEN require additional purchase for Smite 2 exclusive characters, I would be okay with that, but I have yet to hear anything on the topic. I have some mild other concerns irrelevant to the money, like how keeping Smite 1 open while launching Smite 2 runs the risk of splitting the playerbase, which isn't good for either game. Of course, I haven't done any real research into the topic, so if there's been any updates on the topics I mentioned, I don't know of them yet, so feel free to add to any info I might not know.

Purchasers will receive these skins in SMITE 2 as well as SMITE. Titan Forge Games rebuilt its internal skin development pipeline to be able to support this for Year 11, which effectively requires building each skin twice." The other issue comes from the fact that if they mark up skin/gem costs by 50% you arent getting any skins 50% off, nor are you actually keeping legacy gems from Smite 1, you are effectively getting a illusionary coupon to "reduce" the 50% mark up they did (anyone who thinks this isnt on the table rn is delusional as they have been increasing skin prices over the years quite a bit) Hi-Rez is a very scummy company, IDK why people are trying to defend them for this decision. Everyone I know is blown away that we are getting legacy gems to get 50% off skins in Smite 2. A lot of people are also going to buy the Founders Pack which doubles your legacy gems. Players were plenty happy to continue buying new skins in Smite so what is the big difference in buying those new skins in Smite 2 instead?

This would hurt less if in recent years they hadn't been fairly heavy on skins. I do agree though with the post that Smite skins aren't the same as skins for most other games. At high end, like say the cyber arachne skin, it's like a completely different characters. Visuals, voice, looks, lines. EVERYTHING.T5 skins even have gimmicks, like transforming based on some parameter (such as kills). I understand where they're coming from, but I do want them to port the best ones, such as the cyber skins.

@@eyjay1508 Have you played Smite or? Smite is filled with a lot of jank, the UI is made in adobe flash and looks like ass, the combat feels and looks very floaty (despite still being fun), autos desync with the animation all of the time, the graphics are outdated, LoL champion kit design eclipses Smite god kit design (which is bc of the engine), servers are wildly unstable, and the ping in this game is higher than other games. Not only that, but the characters that are unique either had janky workarounds or were bugged their whole life. The Morrigan was banned in SPL for half of her life-span and she still has a laundry list of bugs. It's also on a 20 year old engine and they are getting 0 new blood to work on the game bc no one wants to use it. Saying that it's just "prettier graphics" is really stupid. I think part of the problem is that in the modern day, people are spending more and more and micro-transactions, its almost like them investing in games they like. So when you tell a player thats potentially spent thousands of dollars on your game that "hey, we made a more modern version of your favourite game! but PS: you dont get to keep your skins" it can really rub some players the wrong way. From what i know from friends that are very dedicated smite players, they didnt really WANT a smite 2, so they fear the thousands of dollars theyve invested in the game they love will be left in a dead game that isnt getting developer attention due to their focus being drawn to Smite 2.

Most people that played smite may have not specifically wanted “Smite 2”. But most everyone that has played smite for a long time has wanted a more fluid, less buggy, working game.
