This is WHY YOU NEED a Mazda Miata! - It's the best selling roadster of ALL TIME. It's infinitely mod-able, it's cheap, and it's one of the happiest little cars to EVER roam the streets! This is the car that gave a whole new generation the opportunity to relive the glory days of the legendary British sports cars of yesteryear (minus the countless hours spent broken down on the side of the road)
There's nothing quite like ripping a Miata through the twisties topless, and whether you're looking to DOMINATE at autocross, tear it up at the track, run around off road or just simply want to maximize your smiles-per-gallon on your daily commute, the Miata really is always the answer.
This is why you need to experience Mazda's lovable Miata!

Got a 92 5 years ago for $1,500, with 100k miles, put it in mechanical restoration for about $5k - shocks, clutch, brakes, engine seals, water pump and belts, and all fresh fluids and tires. This is by far the most reliable car in the house - we got 5, including 2021 CX5T, and a 2022 Bronco.

Prices are already crazy in my area, I got a 99 Miata last year for 9K with 52K miles & 1 previous owner which was a steal at the time, it’s already gone up 3K in value in a matter of months.

I was about to search for a Miata on tempest when I heard my hair dresser might like it. F that. I’ll keep my Iroc.
@christopherlowery855

I would keep your IROC too, and I own a miata. The rear independent suspension and LSD is nice, but a T-top IROC is tits. Especially with headers, an X-Pipe, racing cam, and roots supercharger. Add some 10" wheels and some 305s in the rear and you've got yourself a nice daily on your hands. Add a diff-locker and it could weekend the drag strip. I like it.

I am 6 ft 2in, can I still fit in a Miata
@christopherlowery855
@christopherlowery855 Год назад
I would advise against it. I'm 5' 11" and I bump my head on the head liner on strut decompression over hard bumps. I also have coilovers, which is not as soft as the stock suspension. My buddy is 6'2" and he refuses to ride in the car. He says a miata was the car he learned on and that his feet are too big for the pedals. He's also very cramped in the car. The seat has very little movement back and forth and the steering wheel is fixed in place. I think 6' is about the limit on size for this car I'm afraid. At least there's a perk for those of us who were all turned down by a woman who said she wanted a man that was 6' tall or more. Can you do it, yes. Will you love it, no. Especially with a hardtop. I would opt for the 350 or 370Z. I would also opt for a 2015 or newer Mustang GT on 20" wheels. Best of luck.

Some years back, I actually thought the name "miata" was a trim for a more sporty MX-5. It still kinda feels that way somehow but then, I guess its different names for different Markets?? Or just an enthusiast thing to just call it a Miata instead of the MX-5
@MatoVidovic_
@MatoVidovic_ Год назад
Seems like its mx5 in EU (with miata added sometimes on trims) but plain miata in the US x)
@christopherlowery855
@christopherlowery855 Год назад
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the name was changed from "miata" to "mx-5", at least in badging, to conform to the other cars in the Mazda lineup. At least in the states. I want to say this started with the NC. I'm pretty sure the ND is still badged mx-5.

I've actually heard that the 1.8T 20V engine that was used in the first generation Audi TT was a farily reliable engine. I'm not sure how true that was. However, with prettt much all Volkswagen/Audi models, electrical issues are a given. And they can be pretty bad.

Damnit Brad. Now I want to go drive my car. But its bedtime. Tomorrow then! I completely agree, Miata is always the answer. However, I would say anything not sporting forced induction and at least 200hp will probably be stomped all over on the road by any late model SUV, minivan, or pickup. In its stock form, passing someone in one of these, on a 2ln country road is almost suicidal. At high RPM, the car will move, but getting there is a challenge on its own. Be prepared to peg the redline pretty much all the time. Trav is right about the lifters/hydraulic lash adjusters.. In my 90 NA (Naturally Aspirated), I replaced them twice. Two things that were not mentioned are leaky oil pan gaskets and a low pressure oil pump (for the 1.6 NAs at least). I've both pulled the engine and dropped the subframe to do the oilpan gasket. The job takes about 8hrs for a shade mechanic. Other jobs like the timing belt and water pump will take 2-4hrs respectively. Virtually all other engine work is cake to do. Minus anything involving pulling the engine. No mission impossible for the fuel filter on this car. Also, getting to the fuel pump isn't too hard. The injectors, valve cover, spark plugs, ign coils, etc are all stupid easy to get to. Even the starter isn't too hard. Hell, even the clutch slave cylinder only took 30min to replace. Thats the same time as an oil change. The only car that I've owned that's easier to work on was a 92 civic. And not by much. For my 90, the thing leaks about a quart of oil per tank of fuel. So its been parked for about a year. Its now my current project car with a 1.8 engine swap and an overbore in its future. For my 2k boosted miata, the last visit to the tuner we ran it to 266whp. This works out to about 312 at the crank. The transmissions in these cars are good for about 300hp, so I've met my power goals. Since this is a 2000, the lifters are solid. They are not self-adjusting and need to have the lash checked and adjusted using 30mm lash adjustment shims. I actually did this job recently and got the lash to +-.001in using all OEM Mazda shims. Mazda calls them "adjusting disks". Since I also increased the valve spring load to 85lbs, my valvetrain is pretty noisy these days, but way quieter than what it was before the lash adjustment. Just not as quiet as before the valve springs. The car has the 6spd manual and rear LSD from a mazdaspeed. It also has softtop with a sizable tear in it. I replaced the 90 miata softtop once, so I know how to do it. But, since I have a hard top for the 2K, I normally just sport that. I wanted a car I could fulfill my racecar dreams in while still driving on the road. A 300hp miata certainly meets that ambition. The car has enough power to be fun, but not enough to be dangerous. It has enough power to get people's attention, but not to be the fastest on the road. The weight distribution really just makes the car steer. No oversteer, no understeer. Its like driving a gokart, really. Its just responsive and hugs the road. I don't think this car is ideal for drifting, but it is ideal for driving. I would love to do autocross in this thing, but I have kids now, so long 2hr drives to the nearest track is more of a special occasion. In the mean time, its *vrmmm* *rumble rumble* *pop pop* *spool* and *hiss* all the way to to the office on the daily. Overall, the car is a blast to drive. It does take a fair amount of maintenance due to more power =more broken. But, whatever breaks is just an excuse for an upgrade... like pistons. PS. The Skunk 2 intake for this car has a throttle cable mounting bracket that doesn't secure the cable very well. I've lost throttle twice now after pushing it hard. I plan to build a "lock" to address the design flaw. We'll see how that goes. I really like this series. I want to see reasons to want less renowned cars as well. Like the AWD Suby Legacy, the SH-AWD Acura RL and TL, or the 4th gen Pontiac GTO, AKA Holden Monaro, etc. JDM classics are great, but we'd hate to beat them to death. Anyway, great vid, love the car clips. Cheers.
