Monaco has a unique position in the Formula 1 calendar. Not just from a historic point of view, but also when it comes to the money they pay, the sponsors around the track, and much more!

I'd honestly be okay with Monaco no longer being a permanent member of the calendar. The track in doubt that I care about is Spa Francorchamps. @tomnewham1269

If Monaco goes then it will open the flood gates for other races to go. Liberty are only interested in one thing and that is to make as much money as possible. GP's willing to cop up the most money will be the ones that will get the races despite what type of racing it will produce. Already they are talking that there will be 3 races in the US just on itself. F1 will end up being a reality TV show and not a sport.

@@Caiphex Not really. Only 1 of the criticisms levelled against Monaco also applies to Spa but to a much lesser extent. Spa doesn't always provide the best races but there's still enough overtaking places that you can't drive around 3s of the pace or without a MGU-K (and therefore 25% less power) and still not get overtaken. No one expects brilliant races every time, just a track where overtakes are actually possible without a gigantic pace advantage like Gasly had.

@colinfraser369
@colinfraser369 2 года назад
I agree that would be a fantastic way to keep the Monaco GP and bring it up to date by adding something new and unique, not sure how realistic or practical it is though. F1 can't get Monaco to pay the going rate for the race let alone make the kind of investment a plan like that would take.
@colpul2103
@colpul2103 Год назад
I'll agree that it is time to update the circuit and make room for more dynamic racing, however Monaco is the most unique circuit on the calendar. None of the other street or faux street circuits are like it. The main problem with better opportunities for overtaking is all the street in Monaco are too narrow and there really isn't room to add wider streets or a track section, at least not without a lot of effort for a once yearly event. It is used for other races like Formula E but nothing close to racing importance. I would hate to see the Monaco GP go because of its history and iconic cache' but in fairness it is kind of like an old school iconic stadium whose time has passed. Like the old Yankee Stadium. Maybe with the French GP seeming to being going away a track should be built just outside Monaco. FIA's willingness to give up the French GP should be eye opening for Monaco if it really wants to keep the GP. Maybe if they can deal with that much elevation change have it dip down into part of the city in a sort of track/city or road/city hybrid. Right now as it is Q3 is the most exciting part of the weekend as pole is realistically only broken by P1 screwing up or having a DNF. Another issue is with grand stands, there's very limited room for them. Fewest seats on the tour translates into lower revenue. Something like 80% of spectators watch from windows and balconies along the route.

Monaco takes itself too seriously. We live in a different time now! When the Monaco GP was finishing this year, the four cars were all within half a second from each other yet we saw no overtaking. Monaco is a place for the ultra rich to park their yachts, and definitely not designed for the average F1 fans to participate and have a good time. If we need to get rid of one GP this year, it should absolutely be Monaco instead of Spa, which is almost everybody’s favorite.

There's no PASSING because of the regulations from F1. That's the biggest problem with F1, it's so regulated that it's barely racing anymore. It's just cars doing laps and allowing others to pass because someone in the pits directs them to, including telling drives who they WILL allow to win races.

The ACM needs to realize that the Monaco Grand Prix is not like the other two races in the Triple Crown of Motorsports for one key reason. The World Endurance Championship would collapse without the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Indycar Series would collapse without the Indianapolis 500. Formula One can very much live without the Monaco Grand Prix. And given how dull the racing usually is at that circuit, I suspect a rather large segment of the Formula One fan base would not be too upset to see it go. I actually find the Monaco TV direction a relief from all the other events. They don't constantly show full screen car shots (sponsor cam) which offers no perspective on car positioning while racing. Also we don't get the hideous mega zooms on the pit wall crew faces that let you count the hairs on Newey's head. To me there is also a much better balance of air time for all the cars on track with longer distance shots being utilised so overall I find it easier to watch, less frustrating and appearing more like races used to before modern corporate interests decided what we needed to see during a race.

I might be the only one saying this but 1929 was even before formula 1 began so for me alteration is the answer not discarding I would like to see one Monaco for a change rather than 3-4 US GP 3-4 middle eastern GPs...it is a piece of motorsport history do you just can't wipe it off like anything...

We have plenty of history. Spa, Silverstone, Monza being the big 3. Imola, Brazil, Austria, Suzuka are sort of in the history books. Spain tho boring is still technically a historic track. Personally, a fun race in a historic track is only slightly epic as a fun race in the Middle East. People watch F1 nowadays for the racing, not the history.

The biggest problem with Monaco is that the cars have just outgrown the circuit. The actual difference between the size of F1 cars of the past and those of today is astounding when you see them placed side-by-side. They look like multi-trailer road trains when compared to something from the 60s.

As a new fan who started watching in 2021. I appreciate things being “classics”, but it doesn’t make me feel different about Monaco. Their downsides are extremely apparent though. I don’t mind it going away to have better races. I have no nostalgia for these things yet :)
@Spike-sk7ql
@Spike-sk7ql 2 года назад
And you never will either. To be able to get nostalgic about racing in Monaco, you need to go back and watch some of the old races there. 1982, when no one seemed to be able to win, and a car that spun out of the race ended up winning. Or some of the really old ones from the 60s when the cars actually fit, AND had room to race on the streets. Honestly, the cars are FAR too big to race there anymore, but it is literally one of the crown jewel races. I don't see it going anywhere. People have been whining about Monaco since the 90s at least. I was too young to know what else was being said in the 80s, so I just watched, and enjoyed.

But now we have a lot more city tracks and they have proven to be more entertaining than Monaco (Hello, Baku). Shout out to Katy for the great narration!! I hope we can hear your voice in other videos outside of the WTF1 Podcast in the future ^_^ I'm on the fence. Even as a semi-new F1 fan, I can appreciate the sheer history behind Monaco as well as the beauty and challenge of the track. That said, even glossing over the current F1 cars being too big for the track, I don't like what I'm seeing in how the ACM and other organizers are acting like stuck-up American reality TV stars. The fact that they're not willing to sacrifice some of their privileges and compromise for the greater good of motorsport rubs me the wrong way. This year's race was pretty good, probably the best Monaco GP I've seen since I started seriously watching F1 in 2020 (like I said-- semi-new fan). That said, given everything I've seen recently, I wouldn't be too sad to see the Monaco GP leave the calendar until the organizers can get the reality check they need. Which hopefully won't take forever. Besides, the Formula E Monaco E-Prix is more exciting! If anyone wants some good Monaco action, I'd whole-heartedly recommend the E-Prix.

I think they need to change up the nouvelle chicane a little pull the curb in so can take it a little faster and it would be wider, turns 15 and 16 needs to be open a little more and the big change for me would be have the Antony noghes corner the final corner the pits instead put the garages on the road (the main straight) and have what is the pit garages and pit lane as the starting grid they would be able to follow closer because la rascasse would be a hairpin, those grandstands facing into the pit garages on the harbour would have a seat to see the start of the race instead of the pits stop, the pit lane exit would be moved to the left of sainte devote (Turn 1) so instead of hard breaking into turn 1 wouldn’t be a 90 degree corner more like 40, 50 degree corner in turn they would be able to follow closer up beau rivage and into massenet and just maybe get some overtakes, obvs putting the pit garages on the main road would cause a few issues but think they could drive on the Promenade which would the new starting grid/main straight anyway so

Aside from the sponsors and tv handling which it seems a bit shady, the Monaco historic grand prix hosted two weeks before showed how it's possible to have good racing in that track, today's F1 cars are still too large for that track and they aren't changing anytime soon, so Monaco better be nice to F1 if they want to keep their spot in the calendar.

I would love to see fun interviews with drivers/coaches/even F1 officials if there are certain road courses or street circuits they would love to have back on the calendar. Here in the US I got a little annoyed that Miami built a hybrid street/road course around the NFL stadium instead of asking any other road course to renovate, from what I've heard the race track wasn't that good and was legit bumpy at times which made the drivers nervous. I would love to see Road America or Sebring host F1, but as of now they're Grade 2 circuits. Another thing that made me annoyed at Miami's circuit was how faked it looked (there was even a fake water spot off of one of the corners), kinda reminding me of Shanghai in how fake that looks.

It's such a difficult question as the track holds such historic value it would be hard to dismiss, and you cannot argue that qualifying on the Saturday in Monte Carlo isn't one of the highlights of the season. But yes, the cars have far surpassed the track limits and the race is often dull bar a few strategy calls and the odd driver blunder. I personally think it should be kept but only if the FIA can come to agreeable terms with the monagasque association. This will be extremely tough but if they truly believe this is a real staple of the calender, like I do myself, then a deal must be made.
