Why is the US Grand Prix so important to F1? The Austin Grand Prix is one of the biggest F1 races on the 2024 F1 schedule, attracting more than 400,000 F1 fans over the Grand Prix weekend. That is not the only reason why the United States Grand Prix is so important to Formula 1. If you want to know exactly what makes the Texas Grand Prix so special, make sure to watch the entire video today.

I remember the first race in 2012 very fondly. At the time I worked for one of the major tech companies in the area who also sponsored one of the teams. Somehow I convinced upper management to let me be the primary technical contact for the team while they were at the race. Before the race I was able to meet a few of the engineers, the drivers, as well as check out one of the cars. It was a great week and weekend for sure.

Thanks for the videos! I went to the ‘23 USGP with a general admission pass and had an absolute blast. Missed meeting up with you because I don’t have social media to see where you’d be. My mom bought me a couple of your digital images to print as a memento and they’re hanging up beautifully on my wall. Fun fact: COTA has nights from spring to fall where you can ride your bike on the track. Oh, and the bats are only there March to September-they live in Mexico the rest of the year.

We go to about 5 F1 races a year and Austin remains my favorite F1 race. Great track, city, crowd and atmosphere. Best transportation secret if you do not have priority parking- the Barton Creek shuttle. Avoid Lot F at all costs. Tip to save money - fly into and stay in San Antonio. Only 1 hour and 20 minutes from COTA. And an awesome tourist town with its famous Riverwalk. Dallas is 2 hours 45 minutes and hours is 2 hours and 25 minutes.

this year will be my 4th Austin GP, and I actually loving the parking situation at the track (with the exception of traffic leaving). I've gotten Lot L, which is right next to turn 11 and the entrance there. We would go in to get a good spot in the morning, watch the F1 session and walk around a little during the support series, then go out to the car to tailgate where we had a cooler of drinks and food to cool off and recharge. that lot is slightly sloped, so you can actually see turns 9 thru 11, and then the entire back straight.

Had a fantastic experience there in 2021… except for leaving in a rental car. TAKE THE BUSSES. Everything was orderly parking, but leaving took 3 hours to reach the exit road. The attendants were taking bribes to let people out side gates, saw car stampedes straight out of Mad Max (cars hitting each other road raging) and worse. Only disappointment of the weekend. From our parking spot to our Austin hotel was a full 5 hours exiting the race… and we ran to our car as soon as the flag dropped.

Austin has the best overhead view of the paddock from the Paddock Club. You have a commanding overhead view of the entire paddock which is very close to the out building. That does not happen at the European races where the engineering trailers partially block the view of the paddock, making the team hospitality houses/motorhomes a lot further away. You cannot see the team hospitality from the Miami Paddock Club at all and in Vegas they are quite far away from the Paddock Club balconies. In Austin, the team hospitality houses are in indeed in tents as Kym said and they are close to the Paddock Club balconies. So you will see a lot from the balconies that you won’t see at other races.

I wish the attendance figures would be stated for each day of the event. The three day totals mean nothing to anyone but the bean counters. What matters to a fan is how many people are in the crowd with you on any particular day. I was at Indy in 2000 when they estimated 250,000 on race day alone (the Speedway doesn't release actual numbers). I may be mistaken but that may have been the largest F1 crowd in history.

I went to Austin with my rowing team for winter training when it was too cold in winter and the ice would build up fast. It ended up being one of the coldest weeks ever in Texas (I think until at least some of the recent storms) and we had multiple days with tons of freezing rain. No one brought warm clothes, so we were actually colder than we would have been up North where at least we would have some warm thermal workout clothes. It was awful, I did have a windbreaker with me at least, but after literally rowing a marathon distance in freezing rain I was unable to move my hands enough to unzip my windbreaker. I passed out in my bed with my wet clothes and windbreaker still on. Anyways, Texas couldn’t really deal with the freezing rain, they didn’t normally need equipment for it, so almost everything was shut down the whole time we were there. We never got to enjoy the live music. Luckily, things were closer to normal at the end of the week so at least we got some BBQ instead of hotel prepared meals. I forget what we were rowing on, but it had trails and artwork you could see from the water. It’s a nice city.

Don't drive, take the shuttle from downtown. It's $150ish for the entire 3 days, and they have something like 800-900 total shuttles running round trip all day long. The longest I had to wait for a shuttle was on race day heading back to the city and was only like a 30ish minute wait. They actually do a great job with the shuttle service. I just hope the circuit owner has decided against his lofty goals of trying to cram 600,000 fans in for the US GP by 2025. It's already a bit too packed. It's manageable, but still gets pretty sardine can-ish on race day when trying to walk around.

Austin is the only F1 in the US that is designed for fans and not the woke crowd that is only there to be seen. Too bad that historic courses in the US like Watkins Glen, Road America, Laguna Seca, Road Atlanta and a few others couldn't be made to comply with FIA standards. Road Atlanta gets the WEC and has nearby lodging in Atlanta, so it may be the easiest to use.
