I love educational videos like these! As a first-generation immigrant, the majority of Chinese culture I'm exposed to is through family or the entertainment shows/dramas, so it's not often to see some serious educational stuff that also is interesting. Kind of stuck in that limbo of knowing too much to be a complete beginner, but not knowing enough of certain aspects such as literature/history, the stuff taught in schools lol

The acting by Fan Xian while reciting poems is spot on. He recited poems as if it's his own but in mind he thanks the original poet without any hesitation. The tone during these scenes is such an impactful that you will remember his character for a long time just like Wei wuxian. I personally think both wuxian and fan xian's character is so much similar to each other. They are hilarious, serious at crucial times, talented both in martial arts and memorising things and last but not the least they really really love alcohol. 😍

Finally you are speaking about poetry :D Didn't even imagine that you'll try to break down this scene. It's such a blessed gift! Thank you so so much. Loved the three of the poems, but the last one touched me most. I wonder whether it can be interpreted not only as the retrospective. I understood it this way: a person throws themself into some gruesome experience just to write poems about it after, but then exhausts themself in it, and therefore either understands that there are no words in a language that can describe deep feelings, or just loses interest in the initial goal, writing poetry.

Loved this. Thank you for taking the time to put together this exciting (it was for me) and informative video. Being an ABC, I have a decent grasp on everyday colloquial Chinese. Through your channel, am now discovering the wonders of the written word; how secondary meaning can be found within what is defined by the characters. Find Chinese to be such a powerful language in evoking imagery. Your explanations are invaluable. Look forward to more content like this!

love this segment! you totally outdid yourself with this explication of a few of those poems that drunken Feng Xian rattled off [one of my favorite scenes btw and am going to revisit it after this just to listen again] during that exciting evening at court. i don't know Chinese [yet, but hope to remedy that] or chinese poetry but from the few classics you singled here i'm quite convinced of its beauty and sophistication, befitting the rich literary culture of China. you really spoil us, AX. thank you! :) p.s. just want to add, i was quite verklempt when you read them in chinese. so yes... more of similar stuffs please, whenever you see fit.

I was born in China and moved away when I was 5. Even though I watched a lot of Dramas when I was young and a teenager, I didnt watch many dramas for about 10 years and returned to watching them because of Princess Silver and The Untamed last year. My Chinese is pretty good, but channels such as yours have really helped me gain a greater appreciation for the dramas and the industry. Thank you for your great uploads and explanations. You have a beautiful way of speaking and your pronunciation is just perfect in both English and Chinese :)

aquarium985 Dream of the Red Mansion is one of the 4 chinese classics, telling the story of a large clan, the relationships and its downfall. Overall I would maybe say its a really complicated romantic tragedy, but everyone can have different interpretations. It also has really amazing poems and literature.

This is a book that describes a whole family from prosperity to collapse. The original book has 80 chapters. Someone later wrote 40 chapters (rumors say). Because the front and back styles are much different. and it became "Redology".

The third poem hit so close, it's definitely very relatable for me. I used to write poems in my teen years and they weren't half bad rhyme-wise and rhythm-wise, but I get so embarrassed when I read them now (like 15+ yrs later)! Omg I was so prone to embellishing my words and feelings then, trying so hard to be impressive and grand :'D And I just can't write poetry nowadays, I switched to prose completely x)

Great explanations! And great diction and delivery of the poems. I'm currently reading a great book about Chinese poetry writing, explaining the technical aspects of classical Chinese poetry and all the deeper meaning that comes with it and it's mesmerizing. It also helps digging deeper into the Chinese language as a whole. The introduction of the book which talks more broadly about the language and the written characters almost made me cry in front of so much beauty. My goal is to try and write a poem in Chinese. I started and it's really hard, but I love the challenge of it. Then I will calligraphy it and add painting. It's a long term project but a great way to push me to practice my Chinese, my calligraphy and my painting. Anyway, thanks for this series of videos :)

I started almost a minute a few weeks ago then I stopped the video, went to see the whole series lol (I was reluctant to watch it first), I loved it and now I can enjoy your explanations... I understand better why that scene was mesmerising for the audience: to be able to recite poetry in different styles, rhymes , going from a pure abstract description that gives freedom to your imagination to depicting a real state of mind (sadness, hope), can only make that character the god of poetry because it's almost impossible for poets, no matter how talented they are, to have such a diverse style composed with success all the time. Thank you so much for the cultural insights, it does help a lot when watching/reading a foreign culture and it also makes the language learning more satisfying.

One year late, but thank you for explaining the poems. When I learned Mandarin, I skipped anything that sounds ancient especially poems because they were boring, but the way you explained them is extremely interesting! My eyes got teary at the third poem, thanks for cutting the onion. How those lines could describe so much feelings and nuances. I also got to think whether that "autumn" in the last line also refer to the lost of youth? However he did finally accept that his youth (along with the desire to be 'emo' like teens do) had passed, and found the older age to be 'cool like breeze' and good.

Mi Lady X, or shall I call you Professor of Poetry which from what I see here, you are more than qualified to teach 1 or more semesters of Chinese Poetry to Us foreigners. You never cease to impress me with your knowledge of Chinese literature and now poetry. Of all three poets you mentioned, my favorite is Li Bay because it is simple, positive, and uplifting to the common people. The second and the third ones are too structured and somewhat sad, but I like the tonal (the way you read it) sound longing and mournful, should be so if one is old and far away from home. This reminds me of college poetry studying cinquain, quatrain, and Haiku, impactful with few words that make me go ‘aha!’. Being familiar with only few American poets such as Hawthorne and Poe, who by the way are only a few hundred years old, not thousands like Chinese my knowledge of poetry is very limited. When I listen to translated Chinese songs, I realize how beautiful Chinese language is and those poor translators who try to find words or meaning to match it. As a multi-lingual person I very much appreciate translators and interpreters who do it for a living. I love Joy of Life! At first I was apprehensive when they changed the lead male because the first lead was so good! But as I continue into the second season, I am happy with the lead character because he is also very good! Behind the scene showed him attempting a summersault/jumps scene 32 times! That’s professionalism! This drama is just as good as the Untamed or Guardians in my humble opinion. You probably heard about a Korean movie ‘Parasite’ receiving an Oscar award?
@AvenueX123
@AvenueX123 4 года назад
Hi, it's great to hear that you liked this poem video, haiku is very lovely, Asian language does have some advantage in poetry writing. English has too many words for the same thing... uh, my pain when I was in school. JOL is a better drama than Untamed/guardian if you take everything into consideration. Congrats to Parasite, we are joking on Chinese online social media that in Korea films changes reality, in China reality changes films

I watched it a while ago, a couple times actually, and soon after, when I was playing a chinese video game (with a lot of chinese cultural references) I realized that something one character said sounded really familiar even though my understanding of spoken chinese is very limited (I can understand a few words occasionally but seven characters at once? that's a stretch). Hi, I very rarely post comments on youtube. However, I wanted to take the time to thank you for posting this video. Your video popped up just after I finished Episode 46 (ending) of Joy of Life. I found your explanations of the poems really interesting (and the video was just the right length). My Chinese level is not very good - I used to go to Chinese school when I was much younger and I think if they had explained poems the way you do in this video, I would have learnt and understood a lot more. Your explanation was very insightful and I am looking forward to your next video!

Oh, wow! I really enjoyed that. I've been wanting to pick up a collection of ancient Chinese poetry for a while and this just made me more excited. I really liked what he says at the end of the scene to his opponent, though he was no longer reciting poems. They felt kind of poetic.

I really love the cadence of your voice as you recite the poems! I'm curious to know if studying poetry a must in China's education system? If so, at what age?

LOVE this!! I am so glad I clicked through your past videos (and now I have more series I want to go through than I have time for LOL) and found this. Chinese poetry/idioms/sayings always sounds so beautiful to me but this is the first time I heard them explained so clearly in a way that make sense to me. I know you have made few more videos of the Joy of Life's Poetry and I cannot wait to watch them. PS: Watching your review is a joy in itself due to the passion you brought to your review :D. Thank you!

I’m so thankful for you. As a poet, I’m very interested in Chinese poetry but the language barrier and lost translation between Mandarin/English makes it so hard to educate myself by myself... 😭 this is so hard because I know there is more poetry that I don’t know larger than the western language. As an asian person especially I feel like my knowledge is so limited and I cannot reach what I want to in my pursuit of poetry. 😢 Curriculum around poetry in America only focuses on the western half and it’s disheartening...

When you begin to explain the tonal patterns 词牌 and 曲牌 it reminded me of sonnets and other poetic patterns in English. You can write poetry quite freely, (perhaps like the tang dynasty style) or you can follow a lot of rules in writing, as in the yuan and song dynasty styles

I really really love and appreciate you making this video :') always wanted to learn chinese poetry but couldn't find the accessible resources (because I am an immigrant child in an english-dominated country with pseudo-intermediate understanding of chinese culture but never had that formal education), Hence I am really delighted to have discovered your channel, thank you!
