I so like the way you recite these poems. They sound more personal and more lyrical than most Chinese poetry recitation that I have heard. I don't know if you have done other videos on ancient Chinese (or contemporary) poetry but let me encourage you to do more. Your explanations are very lucid, providing insight without overwhelming the listener.

Thank you for this illuminating series explaining Chinese poetry. The lyrics and poetry have moved me in watching dramas but I knew I was missing nuance by not speaking Chinese. One can appreciate and admire a culture but it is through the literature that we begin to understand the soul of a people. Of course dramas emphasize the best ideals within the dramatic conflicts. I have been studying the symbolism in the visual arts but the literature hasn't been accessible. BTW I am 71, not your typical audience. I was originally attracted to Chinese Art, then history, then myth and story. My appreciation of Chinese culture has grown over the last ten years of study. Translation into English is often exquisitely beautiful. English is nuanced but far more specific so I appreciate your explanation of the multiple meanings that native Chinese speakers understand that I miss.

Song for the 3rd poem. Have loved this song for years and did not know it's an ancient poem. My understanding of the lyrics was shallow but just love the music and the feeling of nostalgia and yearning. Thanks for the explanation. Hope the links below work. Omg omg is this real ?? ,I’m literally watching the show right now and it’s brilliant absolutely brilliant ,the writing is some of the best I’ve yet seen , but the only thing that vexing me was when the mum said in the letter it’s not time travelling no parallel universe type thing ,please please AvenueX your the only one who could best explain like what it is and what was his mother and if it’s not time travelling what is it and how did he get there but can still remember his modern life ?? And this drama is so so good I’m not even invested in the romance , I look forward to his interactions with literally everybody else because the banter is so good 🥰🥰

From my meager understanding, the people from the past ( our past) made some type of way to have peoples minds and memories stay alive and go into the people into the future. They were trying to live forever.. Fan was the only one to work. I think mom was in some type of tech that makes people from the past stay in suspension in a city( temple). I could be wrong tho. Tehehehe

The original novel is a time travel drama. The drama changed it (because time travel is banned) into the cycle of life/earth. That after some times passes, the world cool down and restart again but since several people survive with technology, as in keep living, they usually form the same culture. Several people is sleeping in the cold carcinogenesis type of capsule and wake up in different time but not everyone can remember where they came from. Fan Xian is one of the trial with memory, they freeze you with the memory of all the technology/science/literature/knowledge implanted so the "old/modern" world keep on living. He is said to be the only one survived from the trial. That's how I get from the drama, seriously it's way easier to explain if it just time travel.

anastasya vie as soon as you said time travel I got ,so because time travel topics are banned in China does this mean all the topics regarding it become really complicated ??
@anastasyavie6236
@anastasyavie6236 4 года назад
@@candicesibanda3103 yes, exactly. It is a time travel drama originally. Then time travel drama is banned in China so they have to make up a whole new plot of how he has the knowledge above his years. In this drama, it's by imagining that the story is a thesis for a competition and the whole memory baby things. It makes every time travel drama suddenly has this complicated science things or what travel to the past is just their soul.

OMG, I watched your whole video with a big smile~ As a chinese myself, I've always wanted to do a similar video project as you do, in the language of French :D. And I was thinking of starting the project by THIS too!! WOW I enjoy your explanation a lot! Please keep working. Here are some advices that could be helpful. For people who were not familiar with the chinese poem, remaining full (or at least part of the) poem on the screen may be necessary and make a highlight to reveal which phrase you are referring. This would make people less confusing which phrases you are talking about. EDITED: (I just realized that you did this second suggestion but I played the video very fast with X2 speed that I forgot, sorry :/) DELETING line--- And then after you have explained the phrases one by one, it would be nice to read the poem in a more fluent version for a full and general understanding. I myself could be lost after you explaining the phrases one by one. Giving a general vue could not only review the story but also highly the beauty of ancient chinese poem. ---DELETING line Anyway, gogogo~

The most famous Chinese poem about mothers is 遊子吟 。It is also the last sentence you said, and everyone can follow it. There are very few poems about father. In Chinese concept, father is a symbol of seriousness ,toughness and strictness, so not many poets write poems to praise. Even if there is, at least not most people know.

Very appreciative that you attempted to translate and explain the lyric, it's such a beautiful piece of writing, but it's so difficult to convey it's beauty in the English language.

@queenning28

The PRC technically is only 70 years old, you know. This version of China is also a very new world. I believe that every continent is “old” and “new” in its own ways. Chinese people would learn poetry and other cultural elements from thousands of years ago, probably because they are passed down from our Han ancestors. *Han is the majority native ethnic group in China. Similarly, people in many Western countries with “short” histories would learn about cultural elements from ancient Europe. When I first moved to Australia from China, and attended middle school, I was surprised and confused about the fact that we would study European history and Shakespeare plays. I thought to myself - Why am I learning history from a land that is so far away? Why aren't we instead learning Aboriginal cultures that were actually created on this land of Australia? It was after many years that I realised that this has everything to do with colonisation and the fact that the Indigenous culture here has been very marginalised. It is not considered to be “representative” of Australia. Indigenous culture is deemed as “foreign” on its own land. Quite ironic and sad actually. While there’s nothing wrong with post-colonial settler societies learning European culture and history, because everyone has the right to know about his/her ancestry, it is a pity that these societies have not been able to respect and embrace the native history of their own lands. Do you know that Australian Aboriginal history goes back over 65000 years prior to British colonisation? One of the oldest civilisation in the world. I think it’s so wonderful. I truly believe that if a society and its education system could be more inclusive of its indigenous culture, then every country could be as old as time.

well imagine our pain growing up, having to learn and recite so much stuff from thousands of years ago, lol

@JLhannah24 - Well, the current PRC is only the latest era, succeeding the short lived Republican era, which succeeded the Qing Dynasty, which succeeded the Ming Dynasty, which succeeded the Yuan Dynasty and so on, all the way back 5000 years. The red thread that runs through all these years is the Chinese people, the culture, the philosophy, the language, the values, with each dynasty continuing and adding to its richness. The Yuan Dynasty (90 years) emperors were Mongols and yet China did not become "mongolised"; Qing Dynasty (270 years) was Manchurian, and yet China did not become "manchurised". I am constantly amazed by this - that conquerors were assimilated into the local culture instead of wiping it out as what has happened in other parts of the world - eg. the aborigine's history that you spoke about. That is why China records a continuing unbroken history, whilst the history of other places are defined by whoever conquers them next. Eg. the Greek empire ended when it fell to the Romans. And the Romans ended when they were conquered by Germanic tribes.
@jivvyjack7723
@jivvyjack7723 4 года назад
@AvenueX - Actually, i think this shared history and culture is what gives the Chinese their sense of identity and who they are regardless of whether they are Chinese or overseas born. It is the root that anchors them. Just an observation.
