The Maginot Line (which I'm assuming you're thinking of) even incorporated some of these, as they were still so big, useful and imposing over the local geography. They just happened to be fortifying it against every single super power that wasn't Britain or Spain, so it's honestly crazy the WW2 blitz hadn't happened more than once in a thousand years xD
