@@D-A-A-divvy u for real yeah premier league I could agree international World Cup stuff no chance has to be from the country u not remember that guy that played for one of them islands back 8 years ago Jason England or something was English but had Ivory Coast origins that is acceptable but not if ur from a totally other country and moved here for premier league
England had the easiest route at Euro 2020. They should have won that tournament as it was there for the taking. But history repeats itself as soon as they face a big team.
Not really, was England stronger than Belgium or France in 2018? Absolutely not. They were back from losing to Iceland at the Euros in 2016. Euro 2021 was a near-miss, but could have been worse, World Cup 2022 was a Qatar/PSG affair
What you're ignoring is the culture he's set up, the mood he's created, the style he's got England playing. We went out to France in the world cup having had more possession, greater territory, more passes, more shots on goal, more shots in total....What more could Southgate have done? This group is players is no better than the team Sven had but he's taken them miles further, achieved far more. What Southgate has built is a mentality and a togetherness that England haven't had since 1996. I also look forward to more common sense discussions.
Agree he bottled a final, but apart from that Southgate has done amazingly, the best since 1966 on paper and from where the country was before he took over he's done a brilliant job.
Bottled the wild cup Semi final against Croatia too. Wouldn’t say bottled the France semi final just gone. But elite managers win those tough games. So yeah given the amazing talent in the team, he’s done he bare minimum.
If we had a proper manager like ancielotti, guardiola, mourinho and klopp they would have easily won a tournament with England by now. Specially ancielotti under him we would have won WC 2018, euro 2020 and wc22. We would be back to back winners as he is a tournament manager and gets the best out of the players on the day and always makes the correct subs and lineups
@tomg3131 said the same all those years when we had the "golden generation" then Capello messed it up with a far superior team. Southgate has done tremendously
@@adamseymour9960yes and opponents were far superior. Holland, Italy, Germany, Brazil were 10 times better than now. Spain was much better, France arguably better. If Southgate had to face those teams, he would've been out in group stage.
Being Scottish, I’m thankful for Southgate because a good manager would have led England to at least one major tournament win given the current player resources
@@dawnmancaloriankeebals4262 England lost to France in world cup having had more possession, more territory, more pass completion, more shots, more shots on target and Kane missing a penalty. What more could Southgate have done, given the stats are what they are? How was he a coward?
@dombrandon3018 All of that was after France went 2-1 up. At 1-1, they were rocking, there for the taking, and instead of going at them, he bottled it. You bring Rashford on around the 60th minute. With his pace, he would have terrified the French defense... instead, your hero waited until 5 minutes to go to bring on the top goalscorer. He's a joke, Mr I only pick players in form!
Say what you like , no manager of England has achieved more in terms of progressing in tournaments than Southgate other than Alf Ramsey. Think he’ll go one step better next year in the Euros. 👍
Nah completely disagree, he’s lost every big game he’s been in, every tough test the team has fallen short, poor in game management has lead to losing from winning positions on the biggest stage. The team are going nowhere, I hope I’m wrong but I think he’s got one more tournament and if he doesn’t get it over the line then I’m sorry but he’s got to go! This is a team littered with winners, from top to bottom premier league winners, champions league winners, FA cup winners etc
Everyone says well go one step better but we won’t under Southgate, he is a horrible manager with a golden crop of players that has lost to every difficult team we’ve faced
@@lee-rockerfellatuffthat could be reframed that he lacked ambition and possibly had a fear of failure. Chelsea and United courted him for a long time. He preferred being a big fish in a small pond. I totally respect his loyalty and was rightly idolised by Saints fans.
@lee-ed5ni Manchester United never tried to sign him. "There was always speculation, but Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea are the ones which my agent spoke to me about" He said himself, Spurs were the only team that made a move and he spoke to.
Yeah, sour grapes. I admire MLT but he wouldn't have thought of any of the off the field problems England have had for years. GS not only did, his team came up with solutions to completely turn around the lack of team spirit and club rivalry problems.
I used to give Matt a hell of a time when we played Southampton. I'm West Ham. But saw him twice in Southampton and spoke to him and he was a lovely guy, bought me a shot and had time for me. Would still give him shit on the pitch though 😊
Thanks you !!!!! Man’s a box tick for the FA and ruined many chances opportunities in games and for players to be involved.. man’s a spineless box tick and if he was honest and cared he’d have walked away knowing someone else can do better with their eyes closed
I disagree. He's brought a team-based culture through and we've played better for under him than anytime in the last twenty years. Don't forget England were winning against Brazil in 2002, got spanked by Germany in 2010, have failed to qualify and generally otherwise given fans little to cheer about... Mostly with excellent squads on paper
Hard for me to criticise Southgate. His England team gave me 2 of the best summers of my life. Yes would could of won I agree. But before southgate we weren't even in the question.
Consistent underachievement is not success. You just need to watch our final against Italy to understand Southgate’s inability to manage at this level, and remember Italy did not qualify for the World Cup after.
Agreed with everything up to "they've changed them rules now" what is he on about "them rules" have been changed for years. He clearly forgot about the Ireland team and Welsh team from the era he was playing in. The sides had huge amount of players playing threw Grandparent connections. Ridiculous statement q
They haven't significantly changed the rules about international eligibility for players. John Barnes who was born in Jamaica was one of England's best players in the 80s/90s/
Or maybe goddamn it were not as good as we wish we were! It’s absolutely flooring to see folks STILL think we deserve to have done better. Some bad choices sure but tell a 2008 England fan that in 15 years, quarter finalists England at a major competition would be considered a LETDOWN and they’d ripped your hand off at the offering!
We had no entitlement to beat Germany at the Euros, Colombia at the time could have easily beaten us - we’re showing now that we’re able to beat big teams but we shouldn’t forget how far he’s taken us to make that the case - this next Euros will tell all
You can't simultaneously say we should get rid of southgate because he's not good enough and we won't win anything with him in charge but also believe the england manager should always be english. There aren't any available english managers who are good enough to win us a major international honour. That's a fact.
Southgate has been a great England manager. He has beaten Germany, Senegal, Colombia, Italy, and many other countries. He has reached a final, a semi final and a quarter final. I support Scotland, but I like Southgate as a human.
The 2018 World Cup was tailor made for us to win & we fucked it right up. We should’ve deffo at least got to the final. All the best teams were out & the best team we played on the way was Colombia. Also the World Cup that’s just gone they should’ve at least made the final.
Spot on. Agree with everything! The national squad should be headed by an English coach as to represent the entirety of English skills. The entirety. South gates decisions in the Italian final was non-existent. He failed to rise to the challenge when we all saw what was coming. He has the easiest coaching job in the world. He steadies the FA ship and is the safe option for them. The quality of players in the English squad are just smoke screening Southgate’s ability as a coach.
Absolutely agree. Southgate’s tactics in both the World Cup semi and the Euro finals cost us both matches. In the first halves of both games we were dominating but came out in the second and sat back on a one nil lead. Ridiculously weak tactics. This crop of England players are the best we have had in decades and he is not the man to get the best out of them. I could do what he’s done with this lot. He’s underachieved with this squad as he hasn’t gone on to win anything.
Yep, bringing on sterling against France was absolutely ridiculous considering he hadn't played much and had just had his house broken into so had missed training
England, in my opinion, would have won a tournament if they had a top manager. But that means a foreign manager, which would upset Matt. He'd rather lose with an english manager than win with a foreign manager.
Le Tiss. A fantastic player and a great pundit. A man that says what we all think and to think he lost his job at sky over black lives matter political nonsense is very sad.
Southgates penalty player selection in the European cup final was absolutely disgraceful and unexplainable. He sold England out in that moment. Not with standing, he watched the second half of the European cup final and did not change it up when we could’ve consolidated our lead. He also watched the semi-finalsemi final of the World Cup go wrong in the second half and did not change the team up and close the game off. Southgate is a melt in big game scenarios.
His player selection was right apart from Saka, he just didn't give Rashford and Sancho enough time on the pitch beforehand. No excuses for the way they played the rest of the game though
Didn’t Belotti and Jorginho miss? 2 massively experienced players.. if you’re going to blame a manager for players missing in a shootout you’re delusional
@@jacob4690 Saka & Sancho, two, really inexperienced young teenage players, playing the biggest games of the life , that don’t even take penalties for their own clubs?? . You could see the fear in their eyes when they walked up to the ball. They didn’t wanna be there & we’re almost shaking. It was a crazy decision, everyone said Southgate sold out at the time and nothing has changed.
@@davidbrooks187 Maguire doesn’t take penalties and scored? Jorginho takes penalties and missed? To act like you can know who would and wouldn’t score a penalty is embarrassing. Who else would you have take a penalty then? Grealish, Stones, Sterling, Phillips don’t take penalties either so how do you know they’d have scored?
@@jacob4690 He should’ve picked experienced senior players who had played in major championships before & that can handle the pressure better & thus focus more and have a bit more of a chance for scoring and placing the ball where they wanted. Not two Kids that were in school taking their GCSEs less 18 months prior. You just have to look at their faces to see they were absolutely bricking it and that fear clearly took over and the shite penalties ensued. I was in a venue with 2000 people and everyone to a man said the same thing. I’ve also spoke Italian supporters since who said even though their penalty takers didn’t perform well they could not believe their luck seeing those two walk up to the centre spot after 120 minutes.
A top manager would have gotten them over the line in atleast one of those tournaments. but the boys have good banter together now and he's wears a waistcoat so alls good
Agree with the underachieving point, disagree when he says they should be English, give me Klopp or Pep any day… as long as they can communicate their message probably it should always be about the skill of the coach obviously.
And that is the problem with england fans😂 we ar on our best run of form since 1966 with a very good chance of winning the next tournament so he is clearly doing a good job
Every time we played in the 3 tournaments we should've beat, easiest routes, great squad second best behind Brazil in 2022 and France in 2021. He's took them as far as he can.
The point is any one could manage England just the same as any average manager in any one of the English or Scottish leagues could win the league with Celtic they are so far ahead money wise and that’s a fact
Semi Final with CROATIA. Some of the English sports media put slight lyrics above average on the night John Stones on a petistool . We was the villain here for he only made 2 mistakes That is two croatia goals..Same With Fran Kirby against USA WORLD CUP SEMI FINAL.
I agree. - he still wants to pick maguire. Why would he do that when maguire doesn’t get a game. There are 2 English keepers playing higher up the league than Pickford as well. Why doesn’t he choose England’s best team. He should also take note about how the leading Orem teams play. For Example: I guarantee that he won’t play Stones in the midfield position he plays at City, even though he’s adapted really well.
Because we had a glurt of right backs And TAA is a very good midfielder. Ad into that Maguire is good for country and Pickfords performances end of last season were great. The irony being the better performances are from goalkeeper in the bottom half, as they are busier. See nick pope when with Burnley last season
The trouble is in the past that England HAVEN'T beaten who we SHOULD be beating. Look at the generation, 20 years ago. That pool of players was much more talented and achieved a lot less.
We are the best team out there when we play football but soon as we get 1 or 2 goals infront Southgate bottles it & sits back & let’s quality teams put you under pressure for a whole half & he’s surprised why they would of come back to win. If we come out & get 3 goals in 20 mins then keep doing the same thing get more
All opinion though isn’t it. Statistically he is our 2nd best manager ever behind Fabio Capello. So what are you basing your opinions on? His player selection or his performance win rate?
Basically his viewpoint is a guy he doesn't rate as talented as a player or manager, is in the England set up, and he isn't. Simon s opinion on manager hiring is rubbish as well
The delusion is just mind boggling. Keep in mind what opposition England faced in recent tournaments. Easy routes throughout the tournaments and as soon as they were up against a good team they got beaten. So no, they did not underachieve. In fact they overachieved under Southgate. Stating that they should be winning a tournament displays disrespect to other teams. Football matches are not won by talking but by playing.
