Where do the best coaches in the world come from? Well, take a look at Hansi Flick, Jürgen Klopp, Julian Nagelsmann and Thomas Tuchel. They were the top four coaches in Europe this year according to UEFA, and they also all come from the same country: Germany. In a phenomenally successful season, between them they won the Bundesliga, the Premier League, Ligue Un and the Champions League, along with several domestic cup competitions. And even more success looks to be on the cards this season for Bayern Munich, Liverpool, RB Leipzig and Paris Saint-Germain. So why are German coaches dominating the European game right now? Kick off! takes a closer look.

This is a unexplanable story with Hansi Flick: Coming from a small lost village, has been nowhere chief coach (or 4.Ligue something...),then takes broken Team an wins and wins and wins like a Super Champion. In truth he won Quintuple not only Triple. So he won EVERYTHING possible and was adding the eternal champions leage goal record and 14 CL victories in serie. How to explain this??

The proof is in the pudding in the EPL, the fact that Steve Bruce, Alan Pardew, Roy Hodgson, David Moyes, Sam Allardyce, etc always get jobs and even the similar names in the EFL get jobs is because we're unwilling to risk. Hell, Walsall took a risk a while back promoting from our youth set up and made Dean Smith manager, he became successful on the shoestring budget, went to Brentford and is now managing in the Premier League. Eddie Howe of course is also an example of a young manager with passion getting a team to buy into his philosophy. Literally Liverpool of the past was successful when they promoted from the boot room as it was called, teams are obviously always unwilling to take a risk but at the end of the day its better to take a risk and fail than to go with experience and suffer.

Also nicht immer voreilig verurteilen.

Excellent documentary, however I think important to mention 2 other factors contributing to the success of German football and therefore coaches in the last 10 years. First the immense investment the DFB and the country made to football and development of leagues and coaches from youth levels circa the world cup 2006 which has therefore provided opportunities and facilitated the groundwork for more people to get involved/learn and develop. And secondly, the rich history and experience that has existed over the years in German coaching that has allowed for such development, I think a short section in this documentary was owed and frankly/disappointingly neglected in sharing the history of managers such as Franz Beckenbauer, Ottmar Hitzfeld, Otto Rehhagel and Jupp Heynckes at the very minimum. Regardless excellent documentary as can be expected from DW nice work!

And also they forgot to mention, the most underrated trainer in the world in my Opinion is Ralf Rangnick. He invented the modern way of German football, he led Hoffenheim to success with a stable background and also for RB Leipzig. His achievements with Schalke in the champions League is unforgettable. He is one of the best ever, maybe he didn't won Titles like others but he is a Football coach, Manager genius.

I believe having a visionary ownership and a project is a good idea to produce innovative managers. This is the reason why German managers are great . While others want a quick success or have a clueless ownership who sack managers when there is pressure . This is the reason why many previous innovative managers disappeared in other countries. for example, Eddie Howe, di francesco, Leonardo jardim, etc..... In a nutshell, this pandemic is a perfect way for clubs to take patience, build a project, and ignore quick success . This could bring a revolutionary in the future . for example, arsenal must keep arteta and let him manage with no pressure. Same as ole with Manchester United. both are now questionables but could be geniuses in the future . Proof : sir Alex Ferguson was a disaster in his first 5 seasons with the red devils, arsene wenger was trolled when he arrived as a gunner manager, but now they're revolutionarist.

I am very glad this video popped up in my suggestions. As someone who has followed the Bundesliga closely for around 25 years now I can say that this video contains excellent research and information that is often neglected. Ralf Rangnick in particular is a real mastermind and almost everything he touched became gold when he had the according support from the people who ran the respective clubs. He also led Schalke to the Champions League semis around 10 years ago - that is about as outrageous as it sounds today :D.

Soon there will be options to just study to become a coach, not at bigger football academies like Ajax's or Barcelona's but also the likes of Mainz and I suspect even Russian, American and Asian clubs to start working on that. I'm not just saying ex-players will be given a chance, you might actually be able to apply for this in a similar way you'd apply for university and later it might happen even sooner like at the age of 14 or 15 some will go to regular high school, others will study to become physical workers and some will study coaching.

Germany has an intellectual and academic approach to football for a long time and that means you have many more intelligent and well educated coaches to take over elite level teams. In England you have the reverse problem because you have anti-intellectual and oversimplification of football because in England they had a maxim wage until the 1970s keeping players wages low during this period in England and during the 1970, 80s and early 90s because the TV money used to shared equally between the 92 professional clubs in England before the Premier League was created, meant players wages were much lower in England than players in other countries. The low wages in England did a few major things, it meant Upper class, Middle and well educated working class people never went into football because could get just as much money if not more with their education. This meant in England for almost hundred years football players were only the uneducated working class with no academic qualification. 80 years of this created a distrust of academia in English football because all the players and coaches were the kids who were bad at school and a distrust of anything intellectual about football. There use to be a player called Trevor Brooking that English football used hail as some sort of Professor X, just because he has 5 A-C grades in school, which was extremely rare for an English player to have in 1980s and Graeme Le Saux used to be called gay because he read broadsheet newspaper instead of tabloid papers like most English players. Coaching in England became more about having jobs for retired players who had no qualifications work in any other industry, so there became an agenda to prevent well educated English outsiders working in English football as the jobs needed to protected for former players. In Germany big money came into German football earlier like Spain, Italy, France and Holland, so you had more class and education diverse people being football players and when players with a good education start becoming football players you raise the intellectual standard of the game. That is why in Germany you have so many former players who become football administrators because they have the level of education to work in the corporate world, while in England this is very rare because English players over 40 rarely had the school qualifications to work in a corporate arena. So because Germany has a tradition of university educated players means when they become coaches they have the education to coach in the complex world of model football and English coaching is 15 years behind due to the culture anti-intellectualism in English football. Things are now changing as the Premier League led to massive increases of wages for English players. Gareth Southgate was the first wave of middle class well educated players, who is now England coach and Lampard at Chelsea and in the Premier League now you have very well educated players like Tyrone Mings, Eric Dier, Jason Bamford and Ward-Prowse who turned down chances to go to Harvard and Oxford to be players. Plus the big money and foreign owners in Premier League teams has led to more university educated English people working inside clubs, which wasn't the case 20 years ago, so maybe in 10 years English coaches will catch up.

Strategy strategy strategy. They played like gods in the World Cup 2010. Tragic they didn't win it. They really deserved it then. I grew up with a coach that taught a similar play but closer to pep guardiola, with a strong emphasis on the triangle passing tactic, but also somewhat, the art of the passback and reset. We won, a lot. The German team in 2010 had an unbelievable sense of when to pass back and reset, but also the essential creativity up front with Özil. With such a keen sense for when to pass back and reset, they were better able to stay energized and also better able to feather the ball forward, the same way you might feather your brakes in a car, until the opportunity to score became inevitable. They masterfully did this as well as use the maximum amount of space the field has. The final third thing they did masterfully well was have a very high passing accuracy, which helped them make the most of their possession strategy. These three things are key strategic factors to playing at such a high level, and is the most enjoyable form of play to watch. Having played soccer at a high level of play and thought, it was incredibly satisfying seeing them play. It made me realize that strategy is more important than tactics. That, statistically if you remain focused on the strategy that they maintained throughout the cup, you win more, and lower the chances of a player being injured. Joachim Löwe must be a real genius to have fostered that type of play from the team.

Favre hasn’t won anything in two season with arguably one of the best teams Dortmund has had since Lewandowski left us. In the game against Bayern which was a tight game we cut to Favre sitting on the bench, shoulders hunched, eyes wide and staring like a deer in headlights... he is NOT a good motivator especially for young players based on the two years I’ve watched or been to every game, pre-season game, press event, etc. games like the ones against Augsburg and Lazio recently show there is a serious issue when it comes to mentality in certain games against certain tactical setups.. we should not be losing 3:1 to a team like lazio in the champions league, immobile or not..

Why german coaches are the best? In my opinion it’s because they are given chances early in their careers. Kloop or Tuchel are not old managers, but vastly experienced already. Flick aswell. And what to say about Nagelsmann, he’s still a boy 😄. Another factor - coaching the coaches in the DFB (german football federation). It’s not a formality like in many countries, you learn the X and O’s or you don’t get your licence. And they evaluate everyone in the process. And so many talented coaches got the chance in 1st and 2nd league after finishing as top-graduates: Tedesco, Kohlfeld, Materazzo etc.
