GM is one of the world's largest automakers. It has a range of models falling under its four brands, Chevy, Buick, Cadillac, and of course, GMC. GM made its name selling gas burning cars but in January 2021, it made a stunning announcement. The company said it “aspires to eliminate tailpipe emissions from new light-duty vehicles by 2035.” - meaning that GM intends to stop selling gas-burning cars.

Right coming vehicles are electric cars with hydrogen batteries instead of chemical batteries. HYDROGEN AS BATTERIES : HYDROGEN BATTERIES. People often think about hydrogen as fuel, but many forget that hydrogen is not only a fuel, but also very good battery, too. Electric cars with hydrogen batteries instead of traditional chemical batteries to avoid all nocomfortable circumstances. TIME IS MONEY TOO. The fundamental science dictates essential truth of chemical batteries : if a chemical energy storage mechanism is charged as quick as producing hydrogen, then this mechanism PRACTICALLY CANNOT HAVE ENERGY CONVERTION RATIO BETTER THAN ELECTROLYSIS PROCESS. Besides, it is possible to adjust electrolysis reaction speed (for example slow down speed) to get energy convertion ratio of electrolysis better than any chemical batteries. The best one of all possible chemical batteries in earth conditions is HYDROGEN BATTERY. All revolutions of chemical batteries, lithium batteries, LFP batteries, LTO batteries, graphene batteries .. are for reaching to the features of hydrogen batteries. The most simple hydrogen battery (simple hydrogen battery = 1 fuel cell + 1gas hydrogen ballon 300bar) easyly beats best lithium batteries by all features : more capacity, more power, less weight, forever lifespand, no degradation, charging in 5 minutes, same or better energy convertion ratio, but just noremarkable bigger volume sized than lithium batteries. Future hydrogen batteries can use more progressive hydrogen storage technology, like hydride material, can get even leap better. But right now simple hydrogen batteries are already better than almost chemical batteries. So just equip cars with hydrogen batteries. And equip hydrogen filling stations with mobile electrolysers to produce compressed hydrogen 300+ bar on site from electrical outlets. Electrolysing hydrogen filling stations (hydrogen battery charging stations) can run electrolysers from electrical outlets to produce liquid hydrogen on site, to avoid suddenly leap change requirements for big number of already existing current liquid hydrogen cars in the markets. But liquid hydrogen has low energy conversion ratio, which is one of current hurdle of hydrogen cars. For now and near future, compressed hydrogen (produced on site) is more versatile variant : for example, nets of electrolysing hydrogen filling stations mean that : you use electricity from electrical outlets to run electrolysers to produce compressed hydrogen 300+bar on site at electrolysing hydrogen filling stations. So you pay only for electricity (and water of course to run electrolysers), NO OTHER FEES, NO COMPLEX CRYOGEN EQUIPMENTS. (Additionally, car owners can buy home mini electrolysers to themselfe recharge their hydrogen batteries at home). Cars come to 'recharge hydrogen batteries' in 5 minitues (load hydrogen). SAME COSTS OR EVENT CHEAPER THAN COST FOR RECHARGING LITHIUM BATTERIES. No waiting rooms. No wasting time in waiting rooms. Available recharging hydrogen batteries all hours of days. For stations owners, available to pick any imtermitten electrical supply schedule from grids in tandom with intermitten clean energy.

@@HungMelow NIO is a chinese wannabe knock off of Tesla. There battery swapping tech isn't smart or time saving. It's prone to break downs, issues, and not to mention they now need more battery packs than they make cars. @HungMelow
@HungMelow 2 года назад
@@CreativeBuilds I disagree. Super charging stations require a huge infrastructure and populated areas can’t afford a lot of space to build out super charging stations as common as gas stations. You can’t stack super charging stations, but you can stack batteries in battery swap stations. Not a lot of apartments will have more than a handful of charging stations. Long term, super charging batteries deteriorate battery life more quickly. You don’t always need to swap batteries as there’s an option to charge at home, work or any charging station. With Tesla, you have no battery swapping option. It’s still newer technology, but NIO only has to worry about one battery design across all their cars.

As an EV owner speed of charging is a lot less of a concern than "will there be a charger available at all?" Honestly, we take charging stops when we'd normally take pee breaks in an ICE anyways. You can't even buy a Toyota Corolla stripped down for $20k as that is the price of many higher end motorcycles. You do know that the world market is close to 80 million vehicles (mostly ICE) and growing right? The supply of batteries (never mind the supply of chips) is at most enough for 4 million BEVs (5%) right now. Tesla is building all these giga factories (which are behind on schedule of course), but they still need batteries. They plan on making their own batteries, but they're not going to leapfrog CATL, LG and Panasonic (those 3 alone have about 70% of the world supply) anytime soon in battery production. Maybe they can reach BYD or SKI levels of production in a few years (or about 500k units combined between the two). SKI is expanding production in the US (mostly for Ford and VW and maybe Hyundai/Kia) but the factories have to be built and then running, assuming that they can get the lithium, nickel, cobalt and rare earths as well. 12% growth in battery production is actually pretty realistic, especially when over 75% of the current battery supply is not meant for the US. CATL, BYD, the European battery companies, and a good portion of LG's production are not for the US, assuming that LG don't go out of business if they suffer another $1+ billion recall with 2 already in less than 1 year. If they go under, that's 1 million BEVs out of the market and any future expansion of their capacity. Countries can ban new ICE sales all they want, but if the industry isn't ready, the law won't be enforced. People still need to drive and will have to buy what is available, tree-huggers be damned. Even if 100% of new car sales were BEVs, 95% of cars on the road are used and 99+% of them are ICE. Exemptions will be made...
@mrhickman53
@mrhickman53 2 года назад
Admittedly I am an EV owner that will never own ICE again. It boggles me that Tesla remains capacity limited yet the media outlets such as CNBC can't find customers wanting EV's. Sure, a large percentage of potential customers cannot charge in their own drive but a large percentage that do not yet own EV's still can. Per the census bureau 65% of Americans own a home. This pool provides ample opportunity for dramatic EV growth before this portion of the market feels saturated. Tesla's supercharger network will have dramatically expanded by the time that this saturation starts to occur, permitting individuals that may need to make us of rapid charging more frequently to consider EV's. My biggest frustration, probably due to CNBC being a financial channel, is that the conversion to EV's is purely a financial and convenience decision. GM may lose if it cannot convert to EV production in a manner that permits it to secure the market share it enjoys today with their ICE production. We all lose if automotive manufacturers delay their entry into the EV market because "the customer is not ready". I find it amusing that GM has to rely on a government infrastructure bill to expand rapid charging while Tesla, the newest kid in the mass production club, expands their network weekly. GM can also solve this problem if they choose to do something other than whine.

There's no way to do this without relying on some form of electrification in either EV or PHEV technology. As a Volt owner, I can say that it had it's faults, but it was practical. I was able to do my commute each day in the 40 miles worth of charge I needed daily. Tesla is losing their edge. The pick-up truck market is huge, yet instead of a full-court-press on getting the Cybertruck out, they’re distracting themselves with developing robots (among many other things). Ford, GM, and Rivian all appear likely to beat Tesla to market in one of the most popular and highest-margin passenger vehicle categories. SpaceX, The Boring Company, their new robotics division, and more are all key distraction for important people at Tesla. Tesla should be focused on the proven and profitable categories of automation, vehicle sales, solar roofs, Powerwalls, and car insurance IMO. And get the Cybertruck out, forget the Roadster, the Semi, the ATV, and the $25k car for the time being. Put almost everyone on the Cybertruck and make it happen. The Hummer and the Rivian might be more boutique, but the Chevy Silverado and the Ford F-150 Lightning are absolutely intended to be mass market vehicles. As for demand, the F-150 is the top selling passenger vehicle in North America, and the shift to electric is inevitable.

I own a Tesla Model 3. It's the best car I've ever owned. I've had it for two and a half years. I haven't needed an oil change, tune-up, valve job, or have had to replace any parts that commonly break down by 30,000 miles in an internal combustion engine. It has been basically maintenance free. I also got it for $28K, because Tesla took a three year old Prius off me and knocked $16K off the price. In the UK, there already are plenty of electrics being sold by Kia and other Asian manufacturers for L25, about $33K in our money. Electric cars are the NOW, not the future. They already are here, and it is a need to get gasoline powered cars off the road and electric ones on them, and have more and more solar and wind power to get them charged up.

I believe the sales of EV's will explode within the next two years. While GM is asleep at the wheel the world will move ahead leaving GM behind. It might just be the final blow to what used to be the world's largest auto makers. Talk about poor management, GM could write a book. As far as GM's innovations, I remember the pollution pump which I think GM came up with back in the 70's. It was an air compressor pumping air into the exhaust system to reduce tailpipe emissions. The problem with it, was it took power to run the pump which made the vehicles pollute even more than without the pump. But when you checked the tailpipe for emissions the ratio was lower. In reality, the auto polluted more but fooled our politicians which is pretty easy to do sense they have no idea what makes an auto run or why they pollute. GM is responsible for making cars pollute more than before and for fooling our government officials. Not the way to do business. Today the Hybrid and plug in hybrids are another joke due to having to haul around TWO sources of power to move one car. The only answer is the battery electric vehicles like Tesla and the Chevy Bolt.

"GM figures out if they don't make EVs they'll be obsolete within the decade' Fixed the headline for you. Also, the article fails to grasp some basic concepts about market and industry disruption. "Customers don't seem to want EVs, as they only comprise 2% of global auto market." Fails to correlate that equates to nearly 100% of available EVS were purchased, meaning that demand exceeds availability. The reason EV sales is 'only' 2% is because there aren't enough EVs for sale to BE more than 2%. Yet. Market share will ramp as production and availability ramps.

And if we are talking Tesla, then every order is a sale while GM may have direct online sales, it still produces vehicles that the dealers must sell. There's a sweet spot for selling them that allows the maximum generation of profit for the dealer before the markdowns due to the new year. Again, a very inefficient model that prevents GM, Ford, Audi, VW etc., from making what is demanded and bough by the customer (online direct sales) to what they think the customer will buy.

But this is GM we’re talking about. Their conventional cars still haven’t achieved even remotely the same reputation of long term reliability that other brands have, and now they’re pouring resources into hiring hundreds upon hundreds of engineers/analysts for EV development in the middle of a pandemic-induced economic crisis, with no real evidence that their EV business is sustainable, and no fallback to their conventional vehicles after 2035… Definitely some vibes that GM is gonna collapse on itself from overreaching.
