Why Green Cardamom Is So Expensive | So Expensive

Green cardamom is the third most expensive spice in the world, after saffron and vanilla. Just 100 grams of the spice can cost about $9. That’s about $90 for a kilogram. But getting that little bit of cardamom requires a lot of work. Harvesters need to collect 6 kilograms of raw pods by hand to produce just 1 kilogram of green cardamom. But just because several pods from the same tree are ripe doesn’t mean they all will be. This is why each pod must be plucked by hand. So why is it so hard to grow green cardamom? And is that what makes it so expensive?

I only meant that, it is not even cheap here in India.. for a common man the cost is high even though it's origin is here and also cultivated here.. in abroad, cost will be higher because it is exported.. if you buy as a kilo, it will cost less.. you may be not buying as 1 kg, but there are people who buy as 1 kg.. I remember one of our Family friend asking for order from his farm as half kg and 1 kg packs.. if many don't buy it as 1 kg, it doesn't mean that it is cheap and is not expensive... As an owner of 1 acre cardamom land producing over 400kg a year I'm surprised how simple yet informative this video is, For the people who are concerned about the labour wage they get paid around Rs.500 to Rs.700 ($7 to $10) for 6.5 hours of working time, Yes they are underpaid but still save more than an average engineer does in a month in India. They all have their house and family nearby the farm itself and atleast 3 person works for the same farm a day from a family so yeah the job is convenient and nothing special compared to other farming practices except for men where things get difficult due to the inclined position of land and rocks it's hard to carry the bags weighing 50kg a person and to mix the sand for both plantation and cleaning process especially in rainy season. It's the peace and aroma that matters to us and keeps ourselves happy all the time despite other factors like low wages etc. I live in the southern part of India (Kerala - Munnar to be specific).

Well everyone in the market chain has to make some profit. Thats first thing that bumps up the price. And second of course is the transport. Depending on how long stuff can last and location its either transported by plain, ship, truck or train (often combination of these). And of course plane transportation isnt exactly cheap. So its logical that the final price is a lot higher than what the farmer gets. The question is how much the transport costs and who makes what ammount of profit. It could be fair or not but its impossible to tell just based on difference of those two prices.

Interesting. I am Swedish. Christmas is the only time of year when we do not have sweet bread with cardamom... During Christmas time sweet bread is spiced with an even more expensive spice - saffron. But for the rest of the year cardamom is the spice to add to the bread (or actually the dough) cinnamon buns always have cardamom in the dough and cinnamon, sugar, and butter in the filling. I have recently experimented with cardamom-spiced vanilla ice cream, which is rather interesting. You add more and more cardamom and it gets better and better. You just want the next batch to have more cardamom, then suddenly it is just too much and you need to decrease the amount because it is close to unconsumable. The amount limit is of course individual, but it is a very fine line between "I want more cardamom" and "this is unedible/awful".

Indians are mostly protein malnutrised due to vegetarian diet. Those farmers are anything but poor ,they must be making atleast 15000- 20000 dollars per year ,which is huge money in India. Some may say most indians eat meat but eating meat once a week/month/year will still make you protein deficient.
@ludvig4752
@ludvig4752 2 года назад
@@akkr3548 Nah bro. Beans contain as much protein as meat. Protein is built out of amino acids and as far as i know there aren't any amino acids found in meat that you can't find in plant based foods. Usually vegans substitute these with different food supplements because certain proteins are extremely rare in plants or those plants arent available.

@@rishabhrai7552 Every food preferences has its own merits and demerits. Depends on what and why people want , I have chosen vegetarian diet for peaceful mind but it's anything but healthy as people claim . But both vegetarian and non vegetarian have demerits, none of them are perfectly healthy . One of them is damaging for heart and other for kidney and liver. Most indians have increased uric acid , diabetes, blood pressure. Reason : Rice rich diet , Mustard oil and lentils. Recently Indians were ranked 100+ in malnutrition, most people were blaming government but the real reason was meat less diet. Most people here are stunted, poor body ratios, deformed bodies. Most indians are just fats and those doing physical hard work loose those fats fastly and thus look diseased, malnutrised and poor. But we all know there are hardly poor in India who can't even get 3 times food as international media claims.

These sellers or agents from Idukki and Kochi are all over the facebook groups if youre looking for cardamom. Also, it's true that cardamom's colour has a lot do with how easily it can be sold to retailers, so it fetches good value. For this, you can sometimes have the sellers / farmers add artificial colour for your batch, which is a common practice not unheard of.
