Why Hacknet Is The Best PC Game You Haven't Played

Another fun thing about how hacknet infiltrates the real world: I just got a new computer, and I realised that if you have a "light" keyboard (don't know how to say that in English) the colour of said keyboard changes depending on the theme you use in hacknet, and even flashes red when you are being traced. As I played late at night and that was all I could see besides the screen, it added a LOT of tension

This game is friggin phenomenal, especially the Labyrinth section. The final mission was the first time I truly panicked over a game since I was a kid. It's absolutely perfect.

Basic Q&A for this game from a fan of it: Q: Do I need to know coding or hacking to play this? A: No, almost every single command is simple and taught, though most of the commands are real Linux commands. Q: Is this a copy of Uplink? A: Not really, it's more of a spiritual successor. It has the same basis but with some differences. Though calling it a straight up copy is like calling Battlefield a straight up copy of Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, and others. Q: How much playtime do you get? A: For the base game you will get anywhere from 6-12 hours per run depending upon how much you've played it, whether or not you use walkthroughs, how much you explore, etc. The expansion, Labyrinths, adds about 3-5 more hours. Q: Can my system run this? A: Unless you use a potato that can't even view this youtube video in 720p you'll be safe. If it runs a bit slow or laggy from the visual effects you can turn down the resolution. Q: But what if I don't like the interface? A: If you go to your bin folder (IN GAME that is), you can delete x-server.sys, which will default you to a simple linux-style terminal with no interface. This may be way more fun and challenging for linux users or others.

You forgot that The Algorithm does the music. Literally the best part of the entire game.

This game was so good. It had a commitment to immersion that not a lot of games these days really have. Definitely a very stand out experience.

I genuinely wish Hacknet Multiplayer came to be. Imagine there being several modes, such as Fight and simply Infiltrate, something like a faction-type thing, where the players form the best defence they can and actively work on solving potential backdoors, and the person which survives the match (I'd imagine they're something like multiple day playthroughs) in Fight, I'd assume there'd be teams or individual, where you find people's computers, hack into them and destroy their files, or do some trolling. It'd be a great thing to also add something like "Defence Mode", where you quick boot the system in a Defence Mode, allowing you to protect yourself by refreshing your proxies, restarting your firewalls and closing your ports, while you work on counter hacking the enemy computer

I love Hacknet! When I first installed it though I had some issues. Apparently my Antivirus thought it was a actual Trojan, Which of course it wasn't but that alone rises it to the level of holy crap this is awesome. But I remember my old days of Dos and this felt just like that.

i got the game a while ago, played through it all in one sitting yesterday with some friends in a call and all i can say is: if you're even slightly intrigued by this video buy the game, it is so incredibly worth it, all the little tidbits of information scattered across seemingly random devices cluing you in to the main story and most of it's twist add to the immersiveness of this game, it truly is one of the best games i have ever played (and it gets really hectic at times in the best way possible, you feel like a hacker in the movies)

After the Labyrinths update the people are capable of adding their own things through the Workshop. I haven't taken the chance to look through yet but the games creator flagged a few as interesting.

I see a lot of people in the comments talking about uplink, that is an amazing game with a lot to offer and tons of story but I think that Hacknet is the natural progression of the genre. I loved uplink for the story, the feel and the freedom, if Hacknet can deliver a similar experience with a new look Im all game for it! Love the old but dont hate the new.... lets try it!

I first heard of this on Good Game Pocket way back when. I recently got Hacknet as a part of a Humble Bundle and went looking for reviews to decide whether to keep for myself or save to give away. This video has convinced me that it's a keeper.

For what it is, hands down the most immersive video game to have ever been made

Just played through Hacknet non stop and i loved it.

The game is an absolute banger, there are so many revelations behind the premise that you won't see coming but understand completely when it comes. Shit is crazy, especially the finale. And you'll get sucked right into it since the game's premise is that you type things into a computer - which you are doing in real life. If you're worried about the prompt/how pro it looks, you're literally just opening folders and running .exes. Even if that is too intimidating, there's the GUI where you can just click to open things. I would say the prompt can be considered mostly aesthetic, but once you become used to the commands it's actually more efficient than clicking (just like real life terminals). If you can search for folders in file explorer, you can play this game. Get it and enjoy yourself. I'd say it's unlike all other games, but the good news is that there's stuff like Uplink and other "hacker games" you can play. So go nuts.

Legit just finished the story today. I'm such a big hacker lover, this small game made me feel big in the hacknet world. There are so many cool details and story aspects that make this game so amazing. Right now the base game is out on steam for $3 (AUS). Had a blast, gonna pick up the dlc soon!

I beat the base game about a week ago (have around 13 or so hours in game, i like to take my time, at least 3 or 4 hours though are probably idle time) anyway, I just started labyrinths today, and that opening is bloody nuts and neat, at first I thought I was being infiltrated lol.

I got it a few weeks ago in a steam giveaway. It's a really fun game!

This game looks pretty deep. Anyone remember Hacker back in the 80's? I completed it on the commodore 64 in 1986 but I doubt its anywhere near as complex as Hacknet.

played it start to finish twice... aw man... such a nice game... a part of me wants more games like this, another part doesn't so I can just worship this little gem.

Definitely late to the party here, I've had the game for a bit and just picked it up. But it is interesting seeing that your console can get deleted - During the Naix questline, I managed to stop the hack attempt before anything was altered and had no idea there was an alternate path there! I pretty much always had a trap shell set up during hacks after that, thinking it'd happen again.

I wonder if that was a lil' funny reference to when Norton's page was actually hacked back in the day.

It is hard to describe how good this game is. Just play it and you'll see.

Something phenomenal about hacknet is how free it is. You can do just about anything with the tools the game gives you and it never felt like it constricted your gameplay to a path. You could go back and do contracts from the small groups or fuck around and delete the logo from a CFC website (no copyright KFC)

Hacknet is the first hacking game I have ever played. I didn't think that such a game exist until it was on sale on Steam. Watched the trailer, I thought it was cool. Put it on my wishlist and later bought it. I played it and is so freaking cool. Best game ever!

I ran into this when I was looking for a hacking sim because I remembered I played this flashgame as a kid that had similar mechanics to this, just more unrefined. Hacknet has probably been my favorite game since then, and I’m even trying to make an extension for it, like... It’s just that good that I wanna do that. Bless Hacknet

I recently bought hackmud (I've played hacknet at least 8 times over), and I prefer hackmud. It allows you to write scripts in JS and its multiplayer. I also feel it's more relistic.

When I got hacked by Naix, after recovering x-server, I actually replied to his email saying: Fuck you!. I was pleasantly surprised with his reply: "Yea, Fuck you too". Gotta love this type of details 🤩

seven hour campaign? is that including Labyrinths? cuz i just did a long play of the game and completed it in 3 hours, with reading, not including the DLC

A game needs win and loss conditions, you can't loose at hacknet even if you're traced you just come back with few reprocusions, this is more an interactive story, uplink is a real hacking game and is much more accessible

your face has this full 3d feel to it. the way most videos do not. really well done

I have played hacknet and I really liked it. Despite it being a text-based game, it was so much fun and gave me a Cypherpunk feel to it all. I though did not buy and install Labyrinths as I was nervous of what that was capable of doing. I didn’t want it fucking my computer up, but I guess it wouldn’t be on the market if it did just that, so it’s just my paranoia keeping me from trying it.
