This is day 3 of Oliver's harness training. And This is the very first time he pulls weight and feels weight. He is a very smart boy and I am really impressed with how he is doing. He is learning extremally fast!
Oliver is a two year old Clydesdale stallion that we rescued earlier this year with the help of our viewers. He was very sick when we first got him and REALLY Underweight. He has come a long way and made a full recovery from EPM. He is now well and strong enough to start training to pull and eventually ride (Of course with the ok from our vet and chiropractor). Oliver has had quite the journey! Make sure to watch his other videos to catch up on everything! This is where his story begins • Oliver's Auction - Fir...

What a difference from the first time we were introduced to Oliver at the auction. He was so sad, so defeated. His eyes were sunken in his head - he had lost ALL hope. What a transition - He is happy and full of life. He loves working with and pleasing his "Dad". Bless you for saving this wonderful boy!!

You are so right about Oliver’s breeding and history, he is a draft horse, operative word draft. Your training methods work, Oliver learns fast, the combination is wonderful. Oliver will enjoy working with you, rather than just hanging in the paddock.

Wow! Oliver really learns fast! I think you should call the blinders "focus flaps" because they keep the horse focused on where the driver wants him to go. He's protected from distractions. Great training session! Thanks! 🙂

@cassandramyrick6735
@cassandramyrick6735 11 месяцев назад
I think they are also a safety feature as it keeps them from getting spooked by motion around them. Since they are in harness the driver keeps them going in the right direction and avoiding danger. You wouldn't put "focus flaps" on them if they were out in a field and needing to take care of themselves. It's fun to see such a smart horse being trained and making amazing progress!

Your interactions with Oliver have been nothing but kind and filled with love. Since you first brought that poor, sick horse home his welfare has been uppermost in your mind. Could he spend the rest of his days in the pasture with no job? Yes. Should he? I believe not. 1. You have many years of training almost everything but spiders and monkeys. 2. Your interactions with animals are filled with love and respect. 3. It's not as if Oliver will be working 16 hours a day, 7 days per week. Having him help by hauling firewood from time to time will keep him mentally and physically fit. 4. If Oliver seems startled or unsettled by things he encounters, that's normal. He's a young horse with almost no life experience. It's to be expected and doesn't mean the treatment is cruel, painful, or bad for him. Remember, Hunter/Jumpers, Dressage champions, barrel racing quarter horses don't start out as champions or even competent mounts. They must learn which is exactly what Oliver is doing. I believe it will be interesting to see where your and Oliver's journey takes you.
@cathyann1601
@cathyann1601 11 месяцев назад
I agree completely. Oliver picked up on the pulling quickly after being startled by the weight behind him. Once he realized what was expected and that the sled was no threat, he was fine, pulling like he's been doing it a long time. That's what Clydesdales are bread to do - pull. I'll bet he'll be a wonderful mount too. He's loving and sweet. It doesn't get better than this!

I have a lifetime experience with Thoroughbred racehorses. For the doubters out there, blinkers (blinders) are an important piece of equipment for some horses and situations. In harness horses, they keep the individual horses in a hitch looking forward instead of focusing on their hitchmates. In racehorses, they keep a horse's focus looking ahead instead of worrying about other horses coming up from behind or racing alongside. Thoroughbred and Standardbred (harness racing) horses all start training at 2 years old, just as Oliver is being trained at 2. Budweiser starts training their Clydesdales as early as 6 months. So there is absolutely nothing wrong with how Oliver is being trained.

How extraordinary that you would get negative comments about putting a horse bred for working into harness. And I'm sure it is only those people with a lack of knowledge of horse behaviour that would think blinkers are cruel. You deal with all this with great patience and I am sure that many who have been critical will appreciate your explanation and feel comforted to know that Oliver is doing so well in such a supportive environment.

When you stopped brushing him, he kept nudging you like don't stop. I see blinders as a eye guide to stay focused on where there going. JR, Emeri, in a world where many people have lost their connection to God and self, Home, land and animals you and your family are such a gift. Your lives are so purposeful and profound, often in everyday simplicity. Nothing is more obvious than your connection and trust with Oliver. All of us need to walk through life with purpose. We need to discipline ourselves and our children and our animals. Watching you, perhaps because I'm from the generation that appreciates the parents and guardians you are, gives me hope that there are teachers for the next generation. It breaks my heart to see people and children that don't even know where their food comes from and the live in the heartland! You are teaching and challenging the status quo -brilliantly! Be yourselves and that alone changes lives! Oliver and your other animals are blessed to be able to live true to their nature. People have to learn to realize that many animals that are left in shelters and abandoned were victims of humans that don't understand their behaviors and nature and can't afford emotionally or financially to care for them. Keep teaching us!

Oliver was bred to be a work horse. He's a Clydesdale.. The people saying negative comments are definitely non-horse people. Racehorses wear blinders to get them to focus in front. Thank you for explaining it to non-horse people. Oliver did excellent on his first time pulling. Then he had it down pat a few lessons later. He will bulk up as he gets taller. He deserves a lot of horse treats for being such a good boy. You guys lucked out big time with him. Worth whatever you paid for him. He has got a great deposition. 😁

You all have done an excellent job with Oliver. You have spent hours with this horse since you rescued him and you can tell he looks to you for direction. He is fantastic with all the ground work he needs to be a safe, happy and healthy horse. This training is his next step on being a wonderful all around horse. I think sometimes people feel they are doing horses a favor by letting them eat, feeding them treats and leaving them to just hang out. Unfortunately many of those horses end up with preventable illnesses/injuries or injuring someone due to the lack of training. Oliver is going to be a powerhouse when he is all grown up. A well trained powerhouse that will be a joy to work with and be around.

Perhaps you should educate yourself about horses. Especially when you consider a two year old draft horse that is just now recovering from an illness that would take the life of most horses in a similar circumstance. After you have read all you can then come back and make a more educated comment. I know exactly what a draft horse was bred for and I know exactly how they should be trained. For a quick learner, go to "Working Horses With Jim" and start with the first video you see from a year or so ago and go forward from there. You may want to stop when you find a draft horse being born or a collar being fit. A 21 inch collar on a 1700+ pound horse. You'll also see two 3 + year old colts that haven't started to pull yet. You may learn something. Go read a book on when to teach a draft horse to backup or put a 250 pound rider on him.

Giving a horse (or any animal for that matter) the opportunity to learn, with patient leadership, gives it confidence and the realization it has purpose. The result is a happier, healthier animal that looks forward to seeing you walk toward him every day knowing he has a job to do. There are so many examples of this…herding dogs, rodeo animals, ranch horses, police canines, even talking birds. A job breaks up the monotony of doing nothing. Very few animals with a job have behavioral issues such as cribbing, chewing obsessively, whining, swaying or whirling. But…This brings a huge responsibility and commitment to the owner to be certain their working animal has the best nutrition, hygiene and vet care. The negativity comes when people see working animals that have been neglected and abused and are in poor condition. The owners have lost the passion and commitment to their working partners and it puts a negative connotation on anyone who does that type of work. There is a huge difference between nurturing an animal’s spirit to do what it was bred for, and killing that spirit. You, JR, are the nurturing leader that will bring out the best in Oliver and all of the other horses you train. Kudos to you! ❤❤❤

Omgoodness! It's not like Oliver is going out to plow fields every day. Once he's trained to pull something. He can compete if you choose to. And blinders just help keep him focused. It doesn't harm Oliver in any way. People must not know one thing about horses. Seems it doesn't matter what you do, there's always criticism . I love Oliver. And I have a history with horses. Your blessed with Oliver. And he is with you as well. You can see how he trust you 100%. God's speed to you all. ❤

In Australia, we call them BLINKERS. Tho, it doesnt mean the horse is going to blink more.. or less. I feel these folks who are making these comments, know nothing about equines or what it takes to train and operate them. I'm 70 and have a passion for horses since I was 7. Ive ridden, driven, groomed, tacked up and down, jumped, hunted, rode trails... you name it,lol. So, it doesn't matter what tack is called, folks should not take too literally the names of different tack items. It is ALL designed to make the horse's job easier, if the horse is tacked up correctly. I know you've done a terrific job with Oliver, remembering his condition when you acquired him. Best of luck with his ongoing journey, may he bring you many years of happiness. Joh, Bunbury, Western Australia.

He was bred for harness work and the blinders have a purpose, one that helps keep him calm. I love you using sheepdog commands on Oliver 😂

I knew a few & had long conversations with some caretakers of the horses that pull tourist wagons around downtown Baltimore. They told me the horses like to work and they get "vocally" upset if they have to stay in the barn while other horses are tacked up and leave without them! Horses are intelligent creatures and they enjoy having a job. I don't understand why people think Oliver should be just an ornament. His life will be much richer on your farm if he gets to participate. It's obvious you work with him out of love and he knows it. He's such a wonderful guy and so is JR.

Horse's do enjoy having a purpose and routines just like people. I read a story once about an old milk wagon horse that was retired out to pasture, but escaped each day and would walk his old route stopping at each of the houses that he had always stopped at. Don't let anyone make you feel bad about Oliver learning harness work. It's great for their minds and spirit. It also develops his relationship to you. It's way worse for a horse to be bored.

I think some people think the heavy harness is cruel, when it isn't and some viewers just love Oliver and the negative comments come from the heart to protect Oliver. Every one will adjust when they see how well Oliver is doing and maturing and how he will feel useful to have a job.

The people leaving negative comments don't really know what they are talking about, Oliver's breed was actually bred for the purpose of doing a job, by wearing a harness and doing manual farm work, it's what he is designed to do. Also blinders or blinkers as we call them in the UK, are very common on work horses, in fact most horses wear them while working. Personally I would just block the people leaving that kind of comment. To me what you are doing is nothing that isn't done to other heavy horses. His trust in you is obvious.

Those folks giving negative comments dont know much about horses like Oliver. You have taken such great care of him that folks should know you arent going to do anything at all to hurt him. Folks, Clydesdales are BRED and BORN to pull, to carry all that weight. I dont like blinders but I do understand why they are needed. If you look closely the Budweiser Clydesdales have blinders on AND they pull with that big rig.. JR, you and your family are very very awesome. Dont let those negative Nancys worry you.

There are always going to be critical people who don't understand the nature of and breeding of these horses. They don't understand they're not just pets. They're a working horse bred to work and happier if they are fulfilling their duty. But you all are experienced horse people and know what you are doing. The negative comments can be difficult to see, but it provides you an excellent opportunity to educate those who don't know or understand this breed of horse. You are good at explaining and educating people to the way of the horse. Just keep doing what you are doing and the critical voices can choose to learn from you or just leave and go to a different channel of videos. I've grown up around horses and I'm still learning from you and I am old. ❤👏🐎❤️

JR would never do anything to put his animals in danger. He has educated himself as to the proper gear and fit for Oliver of the equipment needed. He is giving Oliver a job to do without abuse. A pet is raised to participate and interact with their people. An intelligent domesticated animal ie horse, pig, goat, etc are happy many times when they have a job to do especially when they have a respectful relationship with their person or caretaker. My sister had a pot belly pig and when the cat rang the bell at the sliding glass door the pig would hop up and go over to open the door (with her nose) for the cat. She loved attention and showed off in parades. This is a beautiful thing that JR is doing with and for Oliver. It is not like being on an Amish farm where it is a daily grind of work.

These horses are meant to work, born and bred to pull loads or wagons. There minds and bodies need to have a purpose. Love watching him progress with his training. This animal is not a pet like a dog. It's a working horse.

Absolutely everything JR said is 100% correct. If you are one of those couch potato experts, just keep it to yourself. We love this family and are full of support for everything they do. JR has been up front and honest that this training is new to him BUT he is doing it with everything that he already knows and he is doing in the manner that works for both him and Oliver. If you cannot fully support them, there are plenty of trainers that you will find more to your liking. I for one, am sick and tired of so called well-meaning 'experts' giving unsolicited criticisms and crappy advice. Watch these videos for enjoyment and shut your mouths so the rest of us can watch for enjoyment. I don't want to take the chance of losing these videos so trust me, I have no problem making sure you don't wreck my fun just because you want to play Mr. Or Ms. Know-it-all

Your love and respect for the animals you have is evident in the way you care for them and educate yourself about them. BLINDERS help with focus! My son with ADHD was given paper blinders in his karate class so he would focus on the instructor. At the time I had no objection to this happening and even now at age 34 he would do much better in life with BLINDERS. Both horses and people do so much better with focus and having a job or purpose in life called WORK. Now that I'm retired with no purpose, I'm only existing. God Bless you and everything you do!!!!
