Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we’re discussing Harry and Voldemort’s final showdown in the Deathly Hallows part 2; the day that Lord Voldemort’s tyrannical regime finally came to an end. We’re also going to be discussing why every time Harry and Voldemort meet and engage in combat (which happens a fair bit), they resort to using the same spells over and over again- with Voldemort using Avada Kedavra and Harry using Expelliarmus.
We see this in their graveyard duel in the Goblet of Fire, and we also see this in their final fated duel at the Battle of Hogwarts.
My question is this: WHY is it that Harry Potter resorts to Expelliarmus for (seemingly) every circumstance? With the wizarding world at stake, wouldn’t it make sense for Harry to use something like the killing curse? Why would he rely so heavily on a glorified disarming charm? Wouldn’t Harry want to guarantee surety of Voldemort’s demise?
Yes Expelliarmus ended up working for Harry, largely- actually, EXCLUSIVELY due to extraneous circumstances- but I can’t help but wonder why Harry would opt for a common duelling spell.

To the very last minute, Harry was trying to get Voldy to stop being evil, one of the very last things Harry says to him before they cast their final spells at each other was "Try for some remorse". That's not someone who'd use a spell to instantly kill their opponent and that's one of the reasons why he;s the hero of the story.

I guess it being a young adult book it makes since. But I cant stand heroes that think like this. Its such a childish saturday morning cartoon way of thinking. They were at WAR. I do not for one second buy that any grown man would,use a spell that literally only serves to knock someones wand out of their hand, while facing an enemy as powerful as voldemort, who was responsible for the death of his parents, many friends and loved ones, and is threatening the entire world. Not only does it realistically do next to nothing to truly neutralize the threat, it honestly makes the "Hero" character come off as naive and selfish because they are placing their childish ideology, or their fear of taking a life above the safety of literally EVERYONE ELSE. Imagine if Harry had landed expelliarmas and the book didnt deus ex machina voldemort into being dead with harry Having to feel guilty. His wand wouldve been knocked out of his hand and then what. He wouldve worst case scenario just you know PICKED IT BACK UP and his attack perhaps killing more people in the process, or at best restreated and rallied his forces to fight another day in which case many more people would surely die. Sorry for the overly long response this trope is just my pet peeve. Characters that refuse to take a life NO MATTER THE CIRCUMSTANCE are not heroic. They are childish, naive, and selfish as I said before priortizing their moral code above the safety of others and the world at larg. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

@@burnttoastburt1467 Good to see a comment like this. I agree with you I detest the trope of never killing in stories even when its absolutely necessary its utterly nonsensical, childish and honestly the supposed heroes that have this mentality just enable villains or are worse than them. I'm happy to see the avatar in Hogwarts legacy not giving to flying fucks about taking life. Unforgiveable curses confirmed and slottable to.

@@burnttoastburt1467 It's called idealism, and heroes. Even despite the very clear reasons he doesn't choose to use it within the book, he chooses not to because he has such high morality. That's patently wrong, as we see very clearly what did happen when Harry won the duel here, and that was very bad for Voldemort. Even if Harry didn't win with Expelliarmus, and somehow had to keep battling afterwards, what's to say that Harry still couldn't do anything else to stop Voldemort? The book didn't "Deus ex" anything, Tom's spell rebounded back at him because of the way the wands work, which was something shown and explained quite a lot before he actually ended up dying. It's like saying that it's cheesy that Superman gets hurt by Kryptonite. You call it a trope even though in a large sense, it's the basis for the moral nature of the story, and beyond that, it's not even anything like Deus Ex where it would actually be unexplained and just fitted in to fill the plot. Why would they not be? Perhaps it's you who's lost touch with what is good, especially considering how much you've misunderstanded the source material in favor of this position
@burnttoastburt1467
@burnttoastburt1467 Год назад
@Jonathan A.C. I disagree with the idea that adhering to a strict no killing rule no matter the circumstances is heroic, for the simple reason as that is not what a hero does. A hero protects those that can not protect themselves. One of the defining traits of a hero is selflessness, self sacrifice for the betterment of others. When a hero refuses to take a life even though taking that live would potentially spare the lives of innocents they are not being heroic. They are at best naive, and childish and at worst cowardly and selfish. I know that sounds harsh but let me put it to you this way. Batman refuses to kill the joker no matter how many times he escapes, how many times he shows himself incapable of reform, or how many people he kills. Batman had the means and opportunity to end the joker many times but chose not to in service of his ideals. So every person that dies at the jokers hands from then on is just as much on Batman its action by inaction. What is really happening here is batman is weighing the potential loss of innocent life that comes with letting the joker live and the value of upholding his idealistic no kill code and has decided that innocent lives are a fair price to pay for his ideals. That is not heroic. Hell putting personal ideals above innocent lives is what villains do. Now I am not saying that heroes should be bumping off every mook, henchman and lowlife thug they come accross, but sometimes using lethal force is the right thing to do. If a character isnt willing to sacrifice their moral high ground or sense of moral superiority to protect others how could that ever be considered heroic. Its not as I said before at best its naive and misguided, at worst is selfishness or just plain cowardice.

@@LordWyatt Harry didn't want to kill, all he knew was that by holding onto Quirrell's arm that Quirrel could not curse Harry. Harry knew his touch was burning Quirrel. Harry blacked out to Quirrel's screams and Voldermort's yells. He woke up in hospital and Dumbledore told Harry that he had arrived in time to pull Quirrel off Harry. So in the book it implies Dumbledore dealt with Quirrel/Voldermort. I don't think Harry killed Quirrel. In the film Harry grabbed Quirrel's face not letting go and burns it and Voldermort escapes. Harry could have also used Sectumsempra, the curse he learned in the Half Blood Prince. The curse was written in Harry's potions book, previously owned by Professor Snape, who invented the spell. Harry used the spell against Draco Malfoy. At the time, Harry didn't know what the spell did, only that it was to be used on one's enemies. Malfoy survived only because Snape intervened. I think you touched on the reason, but stopped short. Yes, it is because Harry isn’t a killer and he would never stoop to Voldemort’s level. Now to dig deeper: When Harry was in the Basilisk’s chamber and he was bitten while killing it, who came to his rescue and healed him with his tears? I believe Harry’s wand’s core recognized Fawkes. Then, in the graveyard and the two wands met, what happened? The wands formed a protective barrier around the two. I don’t believe the Death Eaters could have interfered even if Voldemort didn’t tell them not to. I also believe Harry gained insight when he was with Dumbledore on “King’s Cross Station,” learning about wonton killing just seeing what “happens” to Voldemort there. Finally, if Harry tried to kill Voldemort, the wands would have stopped protecting them both. Thus allowing the duel on equal ground, and Voldemort would have won. But because Harry was still “pure of heart,” and full of love and forgiveness, the wands reunited to rebound Voldemort’s curse as happened that Halloween night so many years ago.

He can live with himself he can go to sleep and not think why did I do that because death and killing is final there is no coming back from it. It's a hard lesson that I personally have to learn when my brother and my father passed on to the next life and the regrets I feel of not being more kind more understanding more loving and more there because now that they're gone I can hug them and let them know how much I love them even though I hope that they knew still that is final and there is no redemption and there's no do over.

I think Harry might also have had in mind what Dumbledore said (and Slughorn said, in telling Tom Riddle about horcruxes) about how killing damages the soul. He had just gotten his soul back to being wholly his own for the first time he could remember. He didn't want to risk the harm a deliberate murder might do. (Maybe that's part of what was meant by not stooping to Voldemort's level, but you didn't make it explicit.)

I always thought it was due to magical stamina. An Unforgivable Curse requires a lot of magical energy to use and too many uses devoured the stamina to use any other spell. A familiar spell that was easy to use and not intended to kill means a magic user could still go onto other battles. I also believe that the reason for why Expelliarmus was used by Harry was that it could be used in jet form to continue to counter other jet spells or to outlast short spells. Avada Kedvra needs a lot of energy and if it ran out then the only thing that could happen was being disarmed with no traces of killing energy.

Before Harry knew about Peter he was fully prepared to kill Serius, and a few books later when Bellatrix kills Serius. He runs after shouting "She killed Serius, I'll Kill her!". Because Hermione made that decision, and didn't wait around for the Ministry. Although, I don't think the Ministry was really involved in hiding the Dursley's. Most of the people involved with this were members of the Order of the Phoenix. At the beginning of Deathly Hallows, it's mentioned that the Order believed that the Death Eaters had already infiltrated the Ministry, and they mistrusted everything to do with the place.

This type of philosophy only works in books where the author can MAKE what she wants to happen happen. If the Wizarding world was real, it would be ruled by Voldemort based on Harry's actions. And the fact that he couldn't seem to use any other spell in a duel is one of the reasons I believe Harry's magic to be more average than above average.

The protection of his late mother and the twin cores of Harry’s and Voldemort’s wands were the primary reason. After Voldemort acquired the Elder Wand, we learned that it should’ve been passed to Draco (from disarming the previous owner, Dumbledore) and then to Harry (from disarming Draco). The Elder Wand could not kill its owner, and Voldemort’s connection to it was weakened by it not being his on a technicality.

I think Harry should have attempted the Cruciatus or Imperius curse during the final duel. He knows he can cast them. Being Unforgivables, they should be hard to impossible to block magically. Then while Voldemort is fending off the Imperio or distracted by the moderate pain from the crucio, Harry could disarm him. The Killing Curse is a bad Unfogivable to use because it either works perfectly or nothing happens. There are no stories of Moody getting pelted by ineffectual killing curses cast by rookie Death Eaters, but Harry can cast feeble Crucios or Imperios.

I always thought that some spells not created to kill had potential to kill a person if used in certain way. In case of Expeliarmus - I thought this spell was producing a strong kinetic force aimed at small area - in this case weapon being held by other - but if used with enough intensity said force could be used to hit other person in chest or head causing injury or death. My view was reinforced with death of Dumbledore's sister - while it is entirely possible one or more guys there was throwing death curses left and right I always thought the fact they want unsure who killed Arianna meant those were regular offensive spells, possibly even Expeliarmus and one hitting Arianna in unfortunate way could have been cause of girls death. Though main reason Harry used that spell in his duels with Voldemort is because it looks cooler when green ray of light is being fought of by green one as evidenced by Return of the Jedi.

First of all I'd just like to say I very much appreciate your content HPTH. I enjoyed this video and theory/ reasons you gave for Harry never using the killing curse. While I can see why he never used the curse once for his character being the main heroe and your reasons make ssense. I am entirley against his choices /reasoning for never using it even in high stress situations though this was Rowlings choice so I suppose I hate her decision for never making harry take life even when he absolutely should have. You say he had more experience with Expelliarmus than any other spell and its worked for him very well thus far so why bother with any other?, which is very true he does but to me he relies way to heavily on it, his overreliance on the spell itself makes him look like a one trick pony , a wizard without an arsenal of spells at his disposal which costs him hedwig, he does learn spells lots of them but the movies never show case this and make him appear as a one trick pony who has no variation, expelliarmus works well because Rowling forced it to when it had no right to work the way it did. You said that the unforgiveables require incredibly powerful intent to be even able to cast them and yes I suppose they do, lacking anything but the intent gets you no where. However I think the series completly overstates, and overestimates the power needed to cast them. Many people would probably find it quite easy should emotions and the circumstances align. Using say incendio, diffindo or Reducto on an enemy while these 3 are not designed to take life they can be misused to take life so does the person casting one of these have any less conviction/ intent should they hit there mark they still mean to take life. Which is why I find this conviction/fixation against using such a curse completely ridiculous. He could have used crucio on bellatrix but apparently lacked intent due to grief but is tipped over the edge because of carrow? I also find this absurd. He doesn't have the will to bring pain to someone who has literally killed one of his loved ones? but seeing a teacher spat on and the revelations of what carrow and the other DE had doen and what carrow was going to do somehow did? You say he's not a killer and values life even if they are the most dispacable mosnters on the planet. This is one of my problmes with his character endless, endless overly compassionate and completely over the top idealistic morall stupidity His sparing of wormtail to preserve remus and siriouses souls costed cederic diggory his life because of harrys largely misplaced morals ( Im aware that he said they'd take him to the caslte where the dementors could have him) The showdown of tottenham court, Ron was right they should have killed Dolohov and Raul, Dolohov ends up killing remus not sure about tonks. His inability to take life costs others theirs. He spares his absolute worst enemy which is not pure or beautiful, its pure moronic stupidity. You says Harry didnt want to stoop to the level of riddle, thats exactly what he should have done, nothing less than lethal force should have been used. I alos find the fact that he offers/presents such remorse/ a chance for redemption to riddle to be so utterly utterly nonsensical that it defies all reason, and I dont find it beautiful either. This whole idea that killing tares the soul to prevent and preserve Harrys purity/innocence at not killing anyone not even voldemort is completely farcical. Let me be clear, its not that Harry doesnt go out of his way to kill anyone that bothers me, its the fact he never kills period even when his friends and allies are dropping like flies the greatest threat to him and everyone in the wizarding world he dooesnt even kill to preserve his purity? You bring up the last point of why he doesnt use the curse, because it ended his family and left the curse scar on his forehead. While very true and a good point I'd say that would have been the spell he should have used in the war and at the BOH, theres no mess its a mercy if anything especially against genocidal maniacs and a psychopath. Thans for the video HPTH thanks for reading if you did an to all an have a great day :) 👍

I've also talked about not wanting be a potter of the late 1800s and near enough end up with almost the same wand as him, don't get me wrong I love it,I think I'm just very surprised, I think where my first reaction was aimed at Harrys character and his wand, him for being saved constantly and his wand acting as a saviour/plot device. However the phonexies feather core is the most capable of the greatest range of magic and phonexies are extremely picky buggers about who they choose apparently. I just hope the game doesn't see fit( that's if they add this level of detail) to have my type of wand act off its own accord I mean if its out of protection for me? This is the torment a soldier faces in war. It’s never easy to decide to kill. You learn to accept the consequences of either direction. There’s a lot of ways where people fucked up. Hermione was trying all her might to stop Harry from paying attention to Malfoy in hbp. She told Harry he was wrong, and was wasting his time. Long behold, she put the entire school in danger, every student’s life in danger, and the death of Dumbledore at her feet. There’s a hundred examples of the main characters’ decisions coming back to bite them in the ass. But, at the end of the day, they each stayed true to who they truly were. There’s a justice in that. That no matter the enemies depravity, they could never change the good side. They were all themselves, flawed, and all, to the bitter end.

for Harry nomatter how much hatred he had for you and how much pain you had caused he always thought everyone could change for the betterand he knew if he used that curse and killed others then he would be no different from the monster that killed his parents, Harry was always a guy that tried to follow in his mothers footsteps to show everyone that they could be better and that they wernt alone in a way he saw that every enemy he faced was mearly alone in thier own darkness was alone in general yes they had others with them in person but they weren't understood not truely, they were riticuled cast out and so much more plus he knew how corrupted he could become if he used such a spell so he used the 1 spell that was litterally the opposite to a degree death was thrown at him so he used a spell that would potentially turn it back on them show them the fear thier victims felt its alittle similar to Nagato in Naruto he wanted to show everyone the same pain he had felt to in a way help them understand what its truely like to feel such pain feel the emotions he felt losing his loved 1s and friends, harry was effectively doing the same thing, could he have used another spell yes there were countless other spells he could have used but this 1 specificlly was the embodiment of what he was trying to do, he showed forgiveness to show he is not the same as Voldermort he was kind even to those who wronged him yes he was angry at the times but he wouldnt ever kill them his emotions said kill but his heart said no you wont kill them you will become that what you wish to destroy, the fact harry tried to show forgiveness and still tried to help tom even at the end shows how much he truely valued life, he never wanted anyone to die not truely and he knew everything Tom went through he knew he was a outcast in a way he knew he had no1 who truely understood him, harry was basiclly trying to say "i understand Tom i know what happened to you, no1 should have had to go through that someone should have been there for you and no1 was so let me helpp you now let me help the child who had no1 and come into the light" he wanted to help even his greatest and most hated enemy and he was the only other that knew what happened in Voldermorts younger life and in a way Voldermort started off with a ideal and it was a good 1 to a degree its just how he approached it and inplemented it because of what happened with his parents he had no1 and for that what he needed as a child what he needed growing up, the guy was left alone in the darkness he was abandonded effectively and that pain turned into hatred for all he believed no1 would ever try to help him or be there for him so he grew angry at all and started his own regime and look at what happened things changed yes he was a evil bastard but things did change untill all this happened, Harry wanted to help someone who was lost help them find a way back to the path that was lost in the woods for so long, because of this Harrys conviction was way stronger and another thing aswell the small flicker of Tom Riddle was trying to surface it may not have seemed it but look at what happened Voldy came back harry struggled hard in the graveyard then next 1 he held his own roughly and then look at what happened it wasnt a struggle for him really even with the elder wand being used against him and he still pushed it back Voldys resolve was shook alittle and that mixed with Harrys conviction was enough to hold Voldy back and potentially beat him

I have a crazy time travel theory that probably wasn't mentioned by anyone in the world after googling it and finding no results- when you travel back or forward in time, you move to a different dimension.. in movies or stories they usually mention someone who would eventually travel back to the time he left but that would not get him back to the original dimension and here's why..- when you leave the original dimension time keeps moving forward... for example-you traveled back in time at 4:00pm, and stayed in the past for 3 hours. the time in the original dimension is now 7:00pm, i mean it wouldn't make sense the whole time would stop moving once you travel in time to a different dimension right? so you must travel to the hour 7:00pm to get back to the original dimension you lived your life in, if this action isn't made you would find yourself in a different dimension then the original one that looks the exact same, from your perspective it won't matter. but the people who know you will never see you again. the people of the original dimension will lose you forever... i hope my theory will go viral and that scientists will read it once time travel will be possible... anyone who thinks the theory dosent make sense simply dosen't understand my point so please read it as much as you want if you have a hard time understanding complex theories...

I don't think he has ever did which we can presume the very powerful can perform magic non verbally.
