This movie didn’t necessarily focus on loss, but the sequel and 3rd definitely are darker and deal with death and loss. The end of the 3rd movie will forever be one of my favorite cinematic moments in animation. I hope Krystal reacts to 2 and 3 because they were just as good as this one.

Toothless’s design I believe came along when someone looked at a screen saver on a monitor and saw a black panther. In the books, Toothless is apparently very small and green.

This is definitely one of my favorite franchises, I've seen all 3 movies and have seen the tv series riders/defenders of Berk and Race to the edge, the series give more interactions and development between characters, and of course introducing and exploring even more dragons like my favorite from the series, The Skrill

If you haven’t already watched the second movie, there are two pretty good TV shows set between the first and second movies. They’re not at all required to understand what’s happening in the rest of the movies, but they do add to the world. The shows are called Riders/Defenders of Berk (title change while the show was airing) and Race to the Edge. Both are excellent

They're not required but they take the world of these movies from an island we see three times into a very fleshed-out, lived-in world. The absolutely bonkers variety in the dragons and the original characters the shows create absolutely should not be ignored when discussing HTTYD. But that's just my opinion lol

9:15 never fails to make me cry ever. Everytime I watch this movie I’m like “nah the scene when toothless warms up to hiccup won’t make me cry THIS time! I’m one step ahead of you!” And then I end up tearing up.

Just wanna throw my hat into the ring regarding the TV series: While many here are recommending to watch Race to the Edge before the second movie, as it takes place before it, it was made and released after it, and I would recommend watching it after the second movie. It's, in my opinion, much easier and better to catch a bunch of specificly made Call-Forwards than always being on the hunt for what could be potential foreshadowing out of an entire series. However, the series Riders of Berk and Defenders of Berk are indeed in all regards between the first and second movie, as are the specials Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon, Book of Dragons, and Gift of the Night Fury. And, to top it all of, there's also the special Dawn of the Dragon Racers, which is in some regards a sequel to Defenders of Berk and a prequel to Race to the Edge, but is in release order also after the second movie. Oh boy... xD

This trilogy is one of the most well executed trilogies I know of. A lot of movies that start out as stand alone films like this one did originally end up suffering from ill-executed sequels, but each one of the HTTYD films are amazing.

If I remember right I think the animation team said they based Toothless's look off of black panthers and his movement and personality on a mix of puppies, kittens and birds.

@@Mothobius He does have some movement specifically based on other animals (the body shaking with the tail wag is unbelievably doggy) a lot of the animations were based on I think the lead animator getting a ball of tape and sticking it to his cat's tail and recording the movement.

You should watch the series too, in timeline they are all before the second movie. We can see many things there like how do they handle having the dragons around as it isn't a Dinsey movie there are still struggles with that or how other people react to the people of Berk befriending dragons and having dragons who are not used to the peace with people yet.

I love this series, though If i am honest, Spoiler for the other movies The third movie completely goes against the themes of the first two in my mind. It just seems like he went from "let's fight for friendship even if it seems impossible" to "let's lock them away forcibly for their own protection." pretty quick. I mean, there are a LOT of dragons that just wouldn't survive down there. How would any non-bolder class dragon survive with the cavern crasher being perfectly adapted to the environment? Its main food was dragon eggs when dragons had a chance to get away, now they are trapped underground with it. Actually, that might be why there are so few dragon types left in the new show.

Just insulting someone and saying they must be 12 because they don't agree with you doesn't exactly make you seem that intelligent either. I had to translate the last comment, but he logically explained his point. This is the translated version of that because he makes a good argument. "Yes, or many other dragons that prefer a diet of other dragons. Now they are all in one place, and it obviously would not end in anything good. Not to mention the dragons, which have completely lost the ability to fly."

Interesting bit of lore. Snotlout and Hiccup are cousins. The tall black haired man seen standing next to Stoic when discussing there plan to invade the nest at the beginning of the movie. He is also the guy who yelled out, "I'm with you Stoic!" Is Snotlout's father and Stoics Brother. His name is Spitelout.

in this universe, dragons are cats basically and yes they are animated after cats! The Animator of Toothless had cats and animated the dragon after their mannerisms
