The music starting at 0:30 just makes me feel sooo uneasy. It is in every single one of your videos. The music makes me feel like I have something to do but I have forgotten what it was and it is already too late. It is like looking down from a skyscraper into the yellowish illuminated cyberpunkish city of ghost in the shell and knowing life won't change for the better.

Well... I'm sure there are many people that don't dislike it. I am more interested in the content of the video so music doesn't bother me. Its just like the other RU-vidrs using very popular pop music that I hate. I have gotten used to it so I don't care as much because I know that there are a lot of people who enjoy what I don't. not saying this music is bad. I find nothing wrong with it, it fits the content and doesn't distract you so it is perfect for this.

Richard Vanni irony definition from wiktionary: "A statement that, when taken in context, may actually mean something different from, or the opposite of, what is written literally; [...]" I don't see the problem. High can mean different things in different contexts.

Good samaritan study : Will spend time for someone else if I myself have enough time. Organ donations : People are just lazy to go through the formalities to opt in or opt out. Road Stripes: Its easier to lose focus and not accurately predict upcoming curves, but strong visual guides on road which basically guides your speed helps even the sleepy ones. Tetanus experiment : When giving a map and telling people to pick a route, you are basically giving them no choice, atleast in their subconscious. "How are you going to do it" (you must do it) vs "Its better if you do it or you may go to hell" (choice is evident)

So how about the case where social media for change is combined with the changing the context by offering an easy outlet for people to contribute... Often times we see links to a kickstarter page or a petition to fuel a movement for change.

You're right, that's probably one of the best ways to change people's behaviour. My video was more targeted towards campaigns which merely say something without providing that extra step.

"Make it easier". I think that's exactly the social media is doing. They're making it easier for people to appear virtuous or appear to support a cause with just click of a button. That's it. People who are following a cause by hashtagging, they 1) are about appearance 2) want it easy

i wonder how this could be applied to more social issues, such as the standards which allow black men to be arrested more often for drug offenses and for longer and harsher sentences. one example of the underlying issues of things at least in the states where we might do well to see one thing over the face value but were bombarded by hashtivism

Probably shouldn't use Kony as an example considering all the bullshit that surrounded the guy who started it. I don't think people forgot it, but I think they wish they could because he made millions of people look like idiots.

I do not believe in activism in social media. I do not like strong emotions either. However "changing the context" is easier said than done. The examples you presented had some authority involved, either the state or a college. What happens when you lack the power to change the context? You will need greater power. In most cases (especially when politics are considered) such power is the active support of a large number of people. How can the active support of lots of people be attained? Bite Size Psych might say "change the context". I would insist that, although that we have two distinct contexts, more power is needed to change the context. I consider this as a loophole in his reasoning.

I never see a meaning in kind of activisym. This is just for fun maybe. Why the people post in Facebook, the French flag and labels as, I am Charlie or pray for Paris.This is very popular in Bulgaria at least, but i suppose in the rest of the world too, except the arabics of course. This will not change anything according to me. Just the stupid people want to show the others that they know something about the world. And actually most of them just watched the knews or see from another person that. And pretend they are so competent of the theme.

the purpose of activism is to be influential enough to have a saying on the context that is described in the video. so activists do not really have much choice besides constantly giving strong emotional messages to people, and this is most quickly achieved via social media. the point made in the video is fair but useless

I love all your videos, but this one disappointed me. I've read this study before. While it may show that hearing messages about doing good doesn't always influence whether or not we ourselves make decisions that improve the world, and that a lot more people are likely to do good if the context makes it easier for them, that's not to say hearing messages about doing good has no effect at all. Maybe the 10% of people who helped in the late condition and the 64% who helped in the not-late condition WERE influenced by the message to do good, it's very unlikely that it didn't help at all. It doesn't make much sense to say "Stop posting humanitarian things on facebook and instead change the context" because, as this video shows, most people will be too lazy to go out of their way to make some sort of significant contribution, like "changing the context". It's much easier for people to share things on facebook, and when there is massive social media attention for a humanitarian issue, people's attitudes towards that issue are likely to change, maybe not much, but over time this can have a major effect, and it may influence their decisions.
@dropmelon
@dropmelon 7 лет назад
monkiram The video is not about how we should stop posting humanitarian causes. He is just telling the viewers that it is much more effective to make charity easier for other people.

So you're saying that the media isn't doing enough to make people want to stop Trump and by putting him in power maybe we could see how bad he is for the country? Isn't that too late? As much as social media may not help, sometimes it might be needed.
