We're often asked why Andy goes to an autism specialist school rather than a mainstream school. To get warmed up for our live autism Q&A on Friday, we thought we'd answer that question for you today!

I’m an autistic person in a mainstream school. It’s hard because it’s scary, the teachers don’t know about autism, fiddle toys are banned and meltdowns are seen as ‘bad behaviour’ My friend Pam has an autistic brother so she knows how to deal with meltdowns. She has to deal with mine. I don’t think it’s fair on one person to do that but she has to do that. However, they are unobservant so I can use a fiddle toy and there are calm rooms I can go in at lunch. I also get a five minute early pas. Sorry it’s long but I thought it was important for you to know how what the mainstream school system is like for autism.

my brother is autistic and was forced by my mom to public school to learn things he will never need in real life. To this day, he's 27 and does not know how to cross the street properly and he is very confused about spending money and wastes his money a lot. He rarely leaves the house and just plays video games. It is great you realize Andy's needs and capabilities and brought him to the proper school. I wish my parents knew this and did the same for my brother.

I live in America. The only exams that are required at least in the state I'm in (TX) are the public school exams however most private schools have something similar but not required by state. Some private schools make accommodations for people with autism, ADD, etc. Your SAT, and ACT are required for college entrance at some colleges however majority of colleges require them so in a way you are required to but in a way you aren't

omg that's horrendous!! Can't believe that happened. Also I have decided to not send my autistic daughter to mainstream for millions of reasons. No mention of a TA as well even though her language is extremely limited and wont sit down being some of the main reasons. I fully understand why you have decided against mainstream !!

Question Kev When you met Anna and realised she cane with Andy did st any point you think, "is this lady ilike worth dealing with an autistic preteen"? I hope this doesnt come across as offensive i mean nothing but the genuine intrigue as to your past selfs thought process

question would art thepery help Andy
@plasticinetears
@plasticinetears 7 лет назад
When I was young I had art therapy because CAMHS had nothing autism specific to offer - I didn't realise I was there to communicate anything through art or whatever most young people do in art therapy.. I was told by the therapist to draw what I liked- so I did.. and she interprited it as if it was some kind of message which was odd.. I drew pictures of guinea pigs, red dwarf characters (showing my age here perhaps) and houses I'd seen- non of it was a message that was too abstract for me.. it got me out of PE for about 4 years and meant I didn't have to endure the other torturous therapies they'd tried which was good for me :) The therapies never worked because there was nothing I could talk about and fix- the problem was with the people and environments around me school, teachers and other kids bullying, in my case also having a family who didn't really understand I wasn't naughty (even after my diagnosis).

Do you get direct payments for Andy's respite care and how did you set it up?
@kevinchapmanvlog
@kevinchapmanvlog 7 лет назад
+June Ingram the overnight one he goes to is directly funded through the council and was set up by his social worker. Direct payments is a nightmare that we’ll probably end up talking about on Friday...

In the videos where Andy talks can you put subtitles because sometimes his high pitched voice makes it hard to understand.

I wouldn't say homeschooling is a waste but if you have a good school that works for your family that's amazing. We don't have schools for kids with special needs. I would have to mainstream my son. He's 5 and at a similar function level to Andy. I wish we had a good school like that here. Trying to figure out the balance of teaching academics vs life skills is hard. Especially since our insurance wants to see academic results in his occupational therapy more than life skills. Apparently here graduating high school is more important than being able to survive in the world after you are out of school. It's quite sad really. We have no one in our lives who is truly educated on autism to help us as we go. There is and autism center an hour from our house but our insurance won't even cover their services. Essentially we are just making it all up as we go. Reading what we can and learning everything we can. We don't get respite services because they don't see us needing them because he can speak (they've deemed him as high-functioning therefore not requiring services). I don't like that everyone assumes it's easier because they are able to speak. There is nothing easy about any of it speech or no speech.

+Faith, Fries & Frappes it’s awful how families can be just left to get on with it like this. If there’s anything we can do to help, let us know.

lollujo Vlogs thanks. I appreciate it. :) at the moment we have a list of goals we've made. Stuff like using the toilet consistently, clearing his own place after meals, pouring drinks, getting dressed and such. It is awful because these kids have so much potential if they can get the right help. Luckily I stay at home so I'm able to give him alot of 1 to 1 time. His older sister has had some trouble coping with stuff like him repeating everything she says. It's hard not to laugh when she gets mad at it haha I love how your vlogs focus on the good and bad of raising a child with autism. Alot I've watched it's all focused on the negative. They are such amazing kids. We enjoy celebrating the small stuff with our kids so much more because of having a child with autism. To me it has been a blessing. It's made me look at parenting from a whole new angle. :)

Good lord if I took my escape artist out of school every time he escaped he would have never gotten through but he did because if he got his way every time he freaked he would never make it later. Why are you not home schooling your child? You giggle at a violent act what if it was a child you have no details but every ones fault but what I see its a big joke for you. You so busy pointing out their faults your not coming up with viable solutions FOR YOUR SON. It is sad that the only one that gets screwed out of this is him. SAD AS F
@kevinchapmanvlog
@kevinchapmanvlog 7 лет назад
+Pj Mcgovern we didn’t take him out of school - he stayed at that school for a couple more years until they decided he needed to go to special school. We explained that in the video. We also explained why we don’t home school him. Maybe try paying attention before you start throwing insults around?
