Nice educational report. But to say that the weight saving of a poly head light unit saves emissions is understatement. All these modern cars nowadays are anchors, they weigh a ton or three. don't even have a spare wheel anymore, which is a real weight saver, unless you need it!! Still, they made headlight covers out of glass instead of poly in the 1940's, so it is just the copy cat society of the manufactures who warms up stuff which has been around since decades. I find those slithered julienne of LED's an abuse to the eye, it is more a battle between different car makers who can produce the meanest, ugliest and aggressive looks on their modern motors. Sorry, sounds like a rant, but just my view to modern automotive world! ;)

We never had these head light lamp laws in europe and glass headlights existed here on cars and they looked a lot different than the standardized US lamps. Still the glass head light shapes were usually simpler than modern headlights. I know lots of euro cars exported to the US had to be fitted with sealed beam alternatives, check out a Saab 900 with euro lamps and one with US lamps for instance. I don't think the US lights look very good on that car. But the earlier model, the Saab 99 with four round sealed beam headlights, that look rocked! Regardless I could wish for some rules and regs to come back on just how lamps ought to designed because things are out of control today! Non serviceable crazy ass looking LED lights that costs several thousands to replace!?? It's just a scam! Even if the head lights last longer (studies show 15 years on average) that's still dozens of times more expensive than older lamps when you see whatg the yearly cost will be. 600 bucks like you mention wold actually be cheaper than what modern headlights or taillights cost nowadays... Right to repair is slowly being taken from people and stuff like this is pricing cars out of peoples hands slowly but surely car ownership will become a thing for the select few. With the exception of those who can keep their museum cars going. New cars, they suck...

Well. I happen to like some of the older styles of round lights. At the moment all cars look the same and that is boring as hell. I have never had a glass headlamp crack or shatter. I liked being able to replace the bulb that was the light and reflector all in one. Super low cost $5 each and the reflector was sealed. Complex light shapes can be strong if the correct type of glass is used. Shatterproof glass has existed for centuries but it is uneconomic to make (better for glass to need replacing). Plastic lights are only the future whilst the current fashion of car styles is in vogue. It will change. Modern plastic lights around £1000->£2500 ($1250 - $3000) each. Most of that is just price gouging. My Father and I drove DS series Citroens (1970s to 80s) which had a fish eye shaped glass (steerable headlamps below) a total of three cars over the years. Never had a headlamp crack or shatter. Never seen a Citroen with a broken headlamp either.
@theheadlightrestorationpro
@theheadlightrestorationpro 9 месяцев назад
True older headlights had basic tensile strength headlights circles squares and rectangles computer what's a rectangle etc.. So they were harder to break but with the shapes they need today even with shatterproof glass would be destroyed very quickly... Polycarbonate is 250 times stronger than glass..... If you Google it... How much stronger is polycarbonate than glass you'll understand why they need it...

*Ford Pinto - Gremlins were not Fords. Good vid. When you do this you should take a moment to back off after doing one side so folks can see the difference between one side and the other. BTW - one of the reasons for the push to plastic was because of aerodynamics. American cars had to start meeting stricter mileage requirements - traditional headlights made that harder. Being able to use plastic allowed for designs with reduced parasitic drag. I recall a friend of mine - car designer - telling me it could add 10% to mileage by itself. Good vid!

The fact that polishing the front surface of the polycarbonate restores the crystal clear clarity proves that the polycarbonate DOES NOT YELLOW. The lens gets cloudy because the front surface weathers. I don't know the resulting chemical changes, but it might be due to UV light that doesn't penetrate very far into the plastic, affecting only the top surface that can be sanded away. The polycarbonate may also have additives in it that keep it from discoloring or becoming less transmissible to visible light. A plastic that's better at resisting sunlight damage is acrylic, but they don't use that because it's much more brittle. Polycarbonate is a plastic with one of the highest toughness, a basic mechanical property, measured in foot pounds, or Newton meters.
@eulinpetit-woodyear6816
@eulinpetit-woodyear6816 5 месяцев назад
Absolute rubbish! The only reason why plastic is used is cost. The manufacturer cost is ruduced but that reduction in cost is not passed on to the consumer. On the contrary cars got more expensive. Let common sence prevail here. Take an old Coca Cola glass bottle and rest it on its side. Essentially you now have a beatiful intricate glass headlight with the bottom of the bottle facing forward. Was it expensive to mold that fancy glass bottle?

Random question after watching some of your other videos: I notice that when you spray the sealant (I saw you use Meg's in another video), do you take any extra precautions to avoid overspray? Yes you can do that if you want if you do not feel comfortable but typically when I tape off an area if you've ever noticed or watch my video on taping off..ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tDuyrgoj6-k.html But I mention it in a couple of videos as well that I tape off about 3 to 5 in all the way around just as a precautionary with any kind of sprayer that you use you should have the proper tip to a gun or a can this can comes equipped with a directional spray fan spray. At holding it 6 in away it puts a coating down about 2 and 1/2 in.. you can literally see it. So long as you control your spray and your emotions you should not be dealing with any overspray more than 3 in.. That's on the McGuire's can the tips are amazing... Thanks for the awesome question..

I noticed that your process includes dry sanding up to 3000P, is there any benefits over wet sanding from the start?
@theheadlightrestorationpro
@theheadlightrestorationpro Год назад
None really... honestly it counteracts what you're trying to do from the start it acts as a buffer or a lubricated why would you want that when you're sending... You're not going overheat the light or anything like that and it cools the sanding flashpoint down which is good for the light. (Heat helps clarity) It's just to aid for smooth final finishes.. A lot of people swear by wet sanding but if you look at the wet Sanders finished product is generally not as good it's hard to know what your depths and how much you have to take off all kind of things check out this video..ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eoPKK-trHdg.html

Well like I said there was many reasons I didn't want to go too far into it just a meeting potatoes.. but yes that could definitely be one.. it's actually much brighter to see through the plastic when it's working correctly in glass.... @@theheadlightrestorationpro I have some working knowledge of light transmission through different materials. Not quite "professional level" knowledge, but close enough. Admittedly it's from years ago, but the basics haven't changed. Lenses for spectacles are virtually all made from composite plastics and polycarbonates now. Safety glasses are polycarbonate due to impact resistance. As you say about stones hitting headlamps at 60mph. Optical clarity, chromatic aberration and light transmissivity of polycarbonates is exceptional and on par with glass. With coatings polycarbonates are superior to glass lenses for spectacles. Price and performance.
