Ive only noticed 1 channel mention this but Halaena definitely knew Jahaerys would die because she was already sewing his funeral shroud in the scene where Aegon was looking for his son before the council meeting.

@stillseriousone some targaryans are known for being 'dreamers' or clairvoyant. They see prophesies of the future. Helena is one but most don't believe in the powers and usually write off the people who have the dreams as being crazy. Rhaegar from the GoT time was also theorized to be a dreamer and that he knew all the wars that were to come but either couldn't stop it or chose not to stop it as everything would lead to the white walkers being defeated.

I think the reason they simplified this event in the tv show was because they wanted to make Aegon have parallels to his father Viserys, and maybe he will reflect back on his father's life in the coming episodes. His son is dead and all he has left in terms of an heir is his daughter and his brother Aemond.

It’s because she’s already seen it in a dragon dream, it’s drawn in one of her books. She is embroidering his funeral shroud already when Aegon comes to get him to accompany him to the Kings Council meeting and she tells Aegon she’s afraid of the rats.

That's why I am sad it's only the twins because after they do that whichever one I can't remember who said remember that your mom wanted you dead. That just adds even more tragedy and psychological terror. Not to mention mention what the two assassins threatened to do to the princess if they keep having to wait.

It was the youngest. Helæna figured that since he wasn’t alive for as long, it wouldn’t be as painful. But then they killed Jæhærys instead and rubbed it in all of their faces. They made Helæna live with the guilt of her choice, and they laughed in the face of the youngest saying his mother was willing to let him die

Cutting Maelor might be a big change from the book, but from a writing perspective it could make sense. Gender and inheritance are central to the conflict. The only difference between the twins is that one is male and heir to the throne, and that is why the boy dies and the girl lives. While the Maelor scene highlights the cruelty of B&C, the choice between the male and female twin aligns with the broader themes of the story. It also puts Aegon II in the same position as Viserys: no male heir, just a daughter and brother.

Why did she point to her son? Because it was incredibly easy for Blood and Cheese to check if she was being honest, and if she lied, this might have enraged them into killing them all. Saving one child beats losing both children.

This scene is books was written so well that it really makes sense why Haelena got damaged so psychologically later on. They actually put a knife on her throat and asks her who should they kill. She asks to be killed herself to which they disagree with no. Only a son for a son. Then asks which son. After lot of hesitation she chooses the younger so the heir remains safe. Then those two laughs and on purpose kills the heir instead and then whispers to the younger son. "You know your mom actually wanted you dead" And laughs it. This guilt that she actually chooses a son to be dead really broke her. The show scene was really pathetic. The gore and sound effect was not needed but that psychological tension and how blood and cheese were such assholes was so dumbed down here

Reading these comments, it looks like I'm one of the rare book readers who liked the change. IMO, the scene in the book felt like the greens' propaganda against Rhaenyra, so I assumed that what really happened would've been different. It would've also been out of character for anyone to order such a brutal assassination. It would've been uselessly cruel to be shown on tv and too much for the beginning of the season. I also like how they portraited Helaena. It seemed to me that she knew Jaehaerys's faith, and it was as if she was following the steps she had visioned she had to take. I also prefer that they didn't make Helaena practically useless for the rest of the story because of her trauma. She has so much more to offer than to be a tragic character who loses her mind.

Honestly, I think vi0lence against children is too jarring of a concept for most viewers, so it’s probably better that they toned it down for the show. I kinda view the show’s events as more true and fire and blood as the embellished propaganda.

This was actually intentional because now that there is only one heir, a female, Aegon's claim to the throne is in question. If he allows the girl to succeed him then the people will know that the throne was stolen in selfish greed but in common law the only other option as heir would be Aegon's younger brother which means that the realm would be thrusted into the care of a maniac as crazy as Daemon. I think it creates a good conflict for the story later on but I do understand people's dislike for the erasure of their other son.

Jaehaera didn’t just lose a brother, she lost her TWIN. It’s even more sad when one twin dies before the other. I have felt this way since Fred and George from Harry Potter... But Blood and Cheese really could have just, y’know... checked below the belt if they wanted to be sure. Would’ve saved time. Yeah the book does it way better, heleana is also now unable to look at maelor because she condemed him to death and becomes depressed because of it, i will give them tye benefit of the doubt tho, they seem to be leaning into her whole dragon dreamer thing so maybe this is essential to her long term character

She is very aloof in the series. She has no real feelings towards her children the way she said "they killed the boy" was so strange then later she just shrugged like, well he was little, so he could get hurt easily. I really hate that they did that to her character that scene could have been really something.

I think they changed it from the books because how Maelor dies in the book is savage being literally torn limb from limb whilst being a short distance away from safety back in the hightowers hands (I think, not the best reader by a long shot)

I thought the third son- maelor lived? Isn't there a third child that's been away studying or is he a baby in this season in the cradle or not born yet but I thought the 2nd son not the girl twin lives and gets sent away for learning, or I getting this mixed up with a later season?

If there were ever a concept where a theme about that distinction in philosophy about Love would be poignant, it would be Love between women. *I find this to be a tiresome problem because honestly romance as a genre is filled with so many awful implications in so many pieces of it's media, **_I'm not shocked but I am disappointed._*

I feel like this one is wrong. In the book she had three kids, the twins and a lil boy, when she was asked which son to kill, she picked the youngest one, but the killed the oldest boy. So this one is wrong.

It’s interesting how many point out that the book it’s self is told from varying and probably unreliable perspectives yet fight over why the show didn’t do it like the show, there is 3 versions of the truth and only one is what actually happened;) so let’s say the show is the actual truth and the book was propaganda and let it be .

I haven’t read the book but i kinda spoiled a small part of the story to my self so SPOILER ALERT before you read more. I saw in the family tree of house targaryen that helena’s daughter marries rhyneara’s son aegon lll so im guessing she saw in her dreams that her daughter would marry a king and become a queen and also saw her son’s bad destiny and she had to make a choice so she picked the one who would suffer the most to die.
