If you're a critic of religion or if you're someone who champions yourself as a strong believer in the power of rationality, you probably think 'supernatural thinking' is bad.
But according to existential psychologist Clay Routledge, supernatural thinking is actually an important part of being a complete human being. From a scientific point of view, all we know is what we have in this life- but if we're open to supernatural possibilities that allows us to at least explore or have hope that there's something about our existence, something about the human spirit, that transcends the material.
When we are dealing with anxieties about mortality, questions about purpose, and trying to understand our place in a large Universe, our minds naturally drift towards at least curiosities about the supernatural if not outright belief.

When I was heavily influenced by religion I saw the supernatural everywhere. After an accident I awoke and that religious aspect of my mental processes was gone. The supernatural that had surrounded me was also gone. Finally alone with only rational thought processes, life is simpler and more real. The fog of religion is gone. I consider that a good thing.

Organized religion is everywhere. You always end up buying into some idea and living by some code that has no material origin. You never really 'escape' any kind of worldview, supernaturalist or materialist. You just become re-conditioned and re-indoctrinated. There is no "None of the above" option.

"It's when we're making meaning that we're often at our best." Thank you for this presentation on the human experience beyond rational thought. Here is an excerpt from Steps to Knowledge on how beliefs can help us: "You do not understand the world. You only entertain judgments about it and then attempt to understand your judgments. The world will reveal itself to you as you look without these restraints and limitations. In this you will find that your beliefs can become useful in allowing you to take each next step in life. They need not limit your perception of the universe. You cannot be in the world without beliefs or assumptions. Yet your beliefs and assumptions are meant to be tools to serve your mind, to give it a temporary structure and to allow it to engage its natural abilities in a positive manner. You do not understand the world today. Be happy that this is so, for your condemnation is unfounded... This gives you an opportunity to witness the world... Remind yourself that you do not understand the world, so you are free to look again." (Marshall Vian Summers, Steps to Knowledge)

Technically it may be objectively better to live in delusion than to find truth, and I say this as someone who seeks truth. When you live in certain lies in order to be happy or comfortable you gain those "perks" of being happy and comfortable. Seeking truth gives you no benefit unless you feel it will gain you "spiritual points". This would be similar to doing something morally good. You are actively trying to find this meaning or God.

I think that the purpose for us saying “everything happens for a reason” -like let’s say the loss of a child or some other tragic loss- is a way to stay calm and not remain *angry and bitter* for the rest of our lives about something unjust or unfair. I see some comments saying “ it’s an excuse to not attempt to overcome our shortcomings”. This is like comparing apples and oranges. We rarely rest on our laurels and say “oh well everything happens for a reason”. We typically say it when there is something so horrible and unfathomable that if we don’t lean into the idea that there is a greater purpose for it we will forever live an angry life, angry at this world, the universe and the people in. It’s healthy way for us to say “I have to learn to accept this, if I lean on this mindset I can grieve without grieving my entire life, I can be upset but I can still have SOMETHING to look forward to or in some cases something shifty that we DO NOT have to look forward to after a big loss”.

When you know the reason is always to learn from our experiences, that is where our "profit" is. To only go that far may bring some comfort, but to ask for what you need to learn takes you all the way. Peace comes from understanding. Peace can be boring. The ego mind needs excitement in the way of anger, sadness or fear. Those hold onto the idea that the world is acting upon you making you a victim so you can escape the guilt and lay it on others. "Men at sometime are masters of their fate. The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars but in ourselves, that we are underlings." Shakespeare would have been ignored if he had said we are always masters of our fate, so he invited people in to think about what blame they might readily escape from.

Right. Immediately when I hear "Everything happens for a reason" I think of this comment happening at a funeral or memorial service. Oh, so my son shooting himself in the head has a reason that neither of us will ever be able to identify, but it was necessary for that to happen? I say, fuck that, I'd much rather have my son here in front of me than to be looking into the face of the moron smugly mouthing "Everything happens for a reason." I'll live the rest of my life grieving his absence, and your words are less than useless. I do recognize that I will learn to accept his death, but empty phrases such as this are not helpful so keep them to yourself. Say nothing or of offer something honest, like "I'm so sorry."

I see what youre saying and I used to only say it 'that way', in tough situations. Now i knowingly say it in many ways. "oh that definitely happened for a reason, even if it only deepened and strengthened our quantum entanglement". But 'eye kneaux' that whatever 'it' was, there was 'good' reason/s behind it, and more 'good' should/can/will come from it. 🙏

I eventually became an atheist. For a few years I felt this way. Then I had an experience on the 91 freeway one night and I changed my mind. I became agnostic after that. I stayed this way until I finally asked for forgiveness for all the damage I had done to others throughout my life. So then I accepted the gift of Mercy through Jesus Christ. *IT IS a way of overcoming*. Just because it’s not the way you deem fit doesn’t mean it’s not healthy. It often has nothing to do with shortcomings. Let’s say someone loses their 4 year old, instead of remaining bitter and angry for the rest of our lives we lean on the idea that there must be a reason/a silver lining. Otherwise it’s much too unfathomable and horrible, the idea that we live in a world where that happens. And we hope that it’s a once in a lifetime type of pain, rather than something that happens often to anyone. So we say “everything happens for a reason” perhaps a parent thinking deep down the next time they are pregnant they will give birth to a child with the same soul and that it will be the right time and that the last time perhaps wasn’t the right time, etc. a billion explanations. But it’s got nothing to do with coddling. Some things in life have ZERO ways to “overcome” the type of pain associated with the event. But we can hope that even without knowing the reason there must have been something that didn’t align. Otherwise most people will remain pretty broken, angry, and bitter. Even with therapy. It’s a way of letting go of negative emotions and processing. IT IS A WAY OF OVERCOMING.

Most religions do not encourage any creativity in their "supernatural" beliefs. The most creative search for meaning is done by not making simple dogmatic assumptions like religions do. In fact, religions discourage exploration of meaning. When in the clutches of a religion, you substitute creative understanding with the already prepared happy meal. Choosing the supernatural is the least creative search for meaning, it is the god(s) of the gaps shortcut.

Having or creating meaning in life doesn’t require any kind of supernatural thinking. I think supernatural is really just a term used when people don’t want to think things all the way through and realize what we actually know about our existence is far more incredible than any story that’s ever been told. My spiritual/supernatural thinking inclinations went away when I read a bunch of books on development and childhood trauma, childhood abuse, attachment theory, attunement, internal emotional regulation of absence thereof, emotional maturity, magical thinking, emotional incest, coping mechanisms we create as little kids in order to deal with parental abuse or neglect. I wanted to believe in something when I didn't know, now, as I know, that wish to believe in something supernatural just vanished. Its like looking at it from above. Supernatural/magical thinking more often than not is harmful. Sometimes it can be useful for a little abused kid, but in adulthood it's more harmful and limiting than helpful, however mild it could be. I have always been an atheist. Yet that didn't prevent me from wanting something spiritual. Until I got seriously educated about what creates a human personality, and how our earliest relationship with our primacy care giver and our earliest environment makes us who we are, creates our deepest beliefs about ourselves and the world around us and our relation to it. Subconscious doesn't seem to me supernatural anymore. Actually, supernatural thinking for me stood in the way of connecting the dots of my childhood experiences and adult life, choices and decision making processes. Supernatural thinking was something that kept me in the dark in terms of understanding what kind of therapy I needed and why etc. Now, as it's gone, I could chose proper therapeutic approach, find appropriate therapist, becomes assertive and not fall victim to charlatans.

Looks like Big Think has lost it. Why would existential mindfulness require terms like "spiritual" when there's no such thing as spirits, or "supernatural" when all things that happen in nature have a natural cause. (Long comment, might edit or reply after completing video) I paused after :30 Because I vehemently disagree with the assertion that with science, "what we have is all we have." The very nature and definition of science means questioning, testing, searching, learning. Striving to answer & understand the whys & hows feeds my curiosity. The thought of some ever unknowable, unseeable Being tinkering with the universe, with our lives, gives me extreme anxiety; it does not bring solace or relief. I've never understood Magical Thinking, so I spent my teenage & early adult years seeking to understand, believing I was broken somehow for not having this faith in the supernatural existence of a creator. And I tried. I tried so hard, even stepping away from the dominant religion of where I grew up & I searched in most of the other Christian denominations. I've read the Bible & Apocrypha, and I've also read an English translation of the Koran. I took classes in Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, & Sufism, Sikhism & Shintoism. I just couldn't make myself believe. But the science? That made sense. That was concrete, provable. What we don't know, what science is searching for answers to, explanations of, is what I find astounding. And if I might hijack a word, miraculous. I don't need to be constrained by arbitrary rules, to be bribed by a spiritual reward or extorted into acting in my own or societies best interest. But again, I still seek to understand why others do, even if I know I'll likely not ever completely comprehend. So I might be back after watching to add more.

I understand what Clay was saying about how we tend to stick to supernatural thinking even if we aren't religious. I was never religious growing up so I was always atheist and stayed that way after some curious research into major religions but even as an atheist of religion, I would still say I have spiritual thoughts and choose not to deny interest in spiritual thoughts or beliefs because I don't even think we can completely lose those thoughts or beliefs, only deny we have those thoughts or beliefs. I personally like spirituality more than religion because it doesn't interfere with reality, it's just life philosophy. For example, I use meditation as a practice to help increase focus, relieve stress, and find a time to reflect and think about the future, and even though I'm not a Buddhist, just deeply respect the teachings in Buddhism, I still use it because it's been scientifically proven to improve/strengthen the brain and it helps me connect myself to everything around me in a spiritual sense and that's nice. So my spirituality is absorbing great wisdom from spiritual teachings like Buddhism, philosophers like Marcus Aurelius, scientists like Carl Sagan, and intellectual thinkers like Noam Chomsky, to help me become a deep thinker and have a connection to everything around me by accepting knowledge and philosophy regardless of the delivery system. Kinda like a Intellectual and a hippie combined into one I guess 😂

Teleological Thinking (AKA: Assumption of Agency) can be explained by Evolutionary Biology/Psychology. The person who assumes the rustling in the grass is a dangerous predator is more likely to survive than the person who assumes it's just the wind, so the genetic predisposition that favors such psychology is favored by Evolution. (Numerous studies have indicated that Psychological predisposition is actually far more subject to genetic influence that previously addressed in Nature/Nurture discussions.) Anyway, inasmuch as Teleological Thinking helped to protect our ancient ancestors from being eaten, the supernatural extrapolation of such thought helps people to be less afraid of their inevitable demise. Rather than the fear of being killed, it promotes belief in some condition (Heaven, Nirvana, Reincarnation, God(s), etc.) that _protects_ us from dying, even if only in a metaphysical sense. It's a fascinating concept to explore logically, which is ironic because...by nature...supernatural beliefs are innately _illogical._ As mentioned in the video, there's Rational thought, and there's Intuitive thought. Unfortunately, by definition, everything that is not Rational is _NOT RATIONAL!_ Having said that, I definitely understand how the Heart can _drive_ the Head to deeper contemplation...and ideally action...with regard to existential issues. For example, anyone who wants their kids to grow up in a better world than the one they grew up in must _first_ imagine things like _having_ kids who _have_ a future. (That's not necessarily an unscientific thing to contemplate; billions of years of astrophysics and millions of years of biology indicate that the existence of children and the future itself are highly probable.) Moreover, the way we define a _better world_ is often influenced by our _emotional_ response to _this one._ Whatever that response may be, it can be the beginning of a process by which we figure out _why_ we respond how we do and _how_ to adjust conditions to promote a _positive_ (or _more_ positive) response. Such a process can _also_ reveal _whether_ our response to a given situation is appropriate and/or whether our preconceptions _about_ the situation are actually inaccurate. To bring things back around, supernatural beliefs...particularly with regard to the assumption of _intent_ on the part of god(s) who may or may not observe, care, or intercede on behalf of _their_ great, cosmic plans...have unfortunately generated historically _bad_ decisions on the part of individuals, communities, and governments with regard to the well-being of people who exist _now,_ let alone those who will exist in the future. This is largely because they favor their _presumptions,_ often to the explicit _exclusion_ of evidence and logic, in the drafting of _laws_ that have a direct impact on current and _future_ conditions, _believing_ they are doing the right thing in a _supernatural_ view of existence, while willfully disregarding any _demonstrably adverse_ affects on...well...children (and adults...and other beings) who are unquestionably alive _now._ Supernatural beliefs are...well...natural within human psychology, but _natural_ isn't necessarily the same as _good._ (See: Logical Fallacy; Argument from Nature).

I am not religious at present but certainly believe everything has a reason. Every action be it in mind or body leads to some outcome. The biggest mystery that decides your life to a huge extent is where you are born , when you are born and which community you are born. NONE of this are a matter of choice just as first few years of your life where you exercise little control. Now that would be an interesting to figure out the reason for that event! Some swallow dime religious aspects which I found rather manipulative or stunting. After this phase of life which is most critical, the rest of the life is almost driven by prejudices, beliefs that drives how we use what we have been given without our choice. True that some inspirational actions makes you wonder if some invisible forces are in charge. Certainly organised religion imposes too much conditioning and prejudices which is an additional baggage over what has already been fed during first few years. A mind, to fully harness its potentisl, has to attempt to reduce this baggage. It can be liberating experience. Lastly love and compassion needs NO religion.

It's very hard psychologically to live and accept the notion that there is no higher purpose, that we are born, live for a moment then we die and cease to exist forever. It's depressing for most people and they seek comfort in belief systems that promotes platitudes such as "everything happens for a reason" and "there is a higher purpose" mainly as a coping mechanism rather than a literal depiction of a universal or absolute truth (as most if not all religions tend to portray their teachings as). Most people nowadays don't take their beliefs that literally anyways and I reckon most are embarrassed by the very thought of committing themselves to that extent. But the promise of something better to expect is very comforting, I'll admit that. That's why as a non-believer, I don't think a world without religion will be better off or even an orderly place. People put up with a lot and most of them stay in line because of the promise of "a better place", if they behave themselves in this life of course. It may be a very cynical view, but it's the only one that makes sense when justifying why people believe in these things

Love this perspective to our seemingly innate drive in thinking/believeing in the supernatural! It saddens me to see so many others (especially those in academia) flat-out rejecting any benefits we may receive from this form of thought/belief, and of the potential merit they may carry in their underlying truths. I'm currently doing a PhD in comparative & evolutionary psychology, and sorry for being nitpicky and based af here, but me and my damn ego just want add that I disagree with the claims about which aspects of humans are truly unique to us (especially with introspection & mental time travel). While these are internal psychological states that are currently impossible to truly understand, the limited evidence that I'm aware of (along with my own experiences) suggest to me that these are shared either with a few or many other species (I specifically study the evolution of human language from potentially shared systems observed in other great apes, like chimpanzees, which display a range of behaviours that seem to demonstrate these abilities). I'm still open to other perspectives, but currently my thoughts generally align with the idea that our uniquely human abilities lean more heavily to the 'degree' these traits are prevalent within us over our specific evolved ability to their 'kind', but of our potentially unique 'kinds' I think are the most important to our success as a species are our incredible reliance on social learning and our ability of lanaguge. These abilities seem to me to lay at the core to our incredible cumulative culture we benefit from now by allowing us to communicative a seemingly infinite range of information and to flexibly alter our innate biological predispositions/behaviours. Of course I believe these as they're my field of study, but as this is something I think about a lot, I just thought it might be nice to add that the question of what is 'uniquely human' is still widely contested and, IMO, far from being truly understood. Sorry for the rant about such a specific aspect to the video, but I really do love and appreciate this research so much. This perspective seems to be vitally important in our neverending search of truth for ourselves and the larger universe around us, so while it might be frustrating for so many people who are firmly rooted in rejecting these seemingly 'supernatural' claims in favour of a specific view of the scientific process, allowing ourselves to even just entertain these thoughts will inevitably help much of our research. Thanks so much for sharing!

It cant be argued that spirituality, especially religion, seem native to humans, almost like its required. The question thats much more interesting to me is: why? And i have come to the conclusion that there are many reasons, all stemming from one thing: primitive thinking. No one human has all the knowledge, we build this tower of knowledge brick by brick. Some know more than others, many dont contribute at all etc. So of course, individually, not too much will change about it. Not soon anyway. Cleary some of those primitive reasons why religions keep popping into existence and continue being quite popular are things like the fear or being alone, of our existence not mattering outside of the meaning we give it ourselves, fear of death, immense ego cause 'humans have to be a special species in the universe, right?`. Some might be more reasonable than others. None of them should have much weight in today's society, however. Since all these topics are rooted deeply, in the emotions of everyone creating the escape called spirituality questioning, arguing, disagreeing with those made-up answers can have catastrophic outcomes. Such as genocides, separation of people, families, friends, etc. While i agree, innately one can argue humans tend (very heavily) to believe in supernatural things the benefits like a feeling of community with like-minded people, peace because you created your answer to those open-ended questions are 1. not real and/or made up. since your answers have no basis, no way to be tested/proven, they have no substance, no meaning, no worth. If one decides to live a lie so be it. But thats once again extremely primitive thinking. Same goes for the communities around those man-made concepts. There are so many things to connect over, why make up religions and other excuses to feel belonging? 2. they do not outweigh the downsides by any means.

The more time we spent expanding our dream state into our waking state the more we needed a structure to govern this dreamstate that started to take over our lives. Because it isn't governed by the same rules our waking state is governed. A cat doesn't fantasize about food. It gets hungry and it eats. If it does find food it starves and eventually it dies. Humans can day dream about where more food could be found, how to get it, how to treat stuff so that it becomes food, how to keep it edible etc. This consumes massive energy. And much that we come up with could be potentially utterly useless as it does not adhere to the same rules as our physical world. So we daydream rules that we call culture, law and religion so that we limit the dreams and keep them closer to reality. Eventually we figured out how to dream and test the rules that govern reality and developed science and increased the efficiency of our dreams even more. In the next phase we will marry science and religion and then recieve new expansions that we couldn't dream of before.

It would be difficult to make meaningful art and music without breaking rational rules. After removing myself from religion, I tried to fix every problem with my rational mind. Eventually I felt cornered. I knew I could never find solace without giving away to some level of spiritual thinking. Mostly because I struggled to connect with humans around me. It was tough to agree to, but I now go to a less dogmatic church just to be around people who find love and inspiration and something supernatural. I don't think on anything taught there. I told myself that what I put faith in matters very little, it's just the practice of faith that has the benefit.

Sometimes instincts work better than thinking. The “rational thinking” in mind isnt rational but is simply thinking. Which is clogged with ego, bias, trauma, emotions, experience etc. Instincts are work of pure sub concious mind. Idk if it's from another world or simply mathematics going in your brain. I don't negate the teleology of the "supernatural" but I just don't think that it's the way for our species to move forward. We must conquer our limitations by being proactive, slowly, even if it takes time. We must understand how certain phenomena occur or perhaps its historiography, for us to have a grasp of the "actual." I must say that the "supernatural" is often exploited by the lazy, bounded to be the "last man" as I relate it to Nietszche.

The situations that he describes as alternatives to rational thinking, which allow us to imagine, and be creative, aren't. Our actions, and beliefs don't have to strictly conform to specific criteria to be rational. In the same vein, acts that aren't purely in our self-interest don't represent a way of thinking that elevates us beyond rational thought. It is a matter of shades, not black and white.

Psychological comfort. Too afraid to face the truth, that as far as we can tell, there is no fundamental purpose or meaning. That's wy we believe. Cause we are scared. Face it. Grow up. Make your own meaning. It's all up to you.

Imagine if we didn’t try to assign meaning to things! We (and I think this goes for a lot of living things) try to accurately find explanations for everything we encounter - consciously or not - to our best ability. From why the billiard balls went where they did - to why the world exists. It is simply a much better survival strategy to ask “why”, sometimes even when there is zero guarantees for a certain answer. Humans may be the creatures that in general gets the least punishment (and most reward) for seeking explanations for things that may not seem directly relevant for immediate survival (there are those of us that have time to waste, going down rabbit holes), and as a result evolving to be curious about ‘mysterious’ things.

Thank you for that explanation. It's not about santa clause, or magic spells or the way supernatural makes it sound. It's about hope and faith, the human spirit and our capacity for evil AND our capacity for good. We have free will to choose between the two but faith is what sustains us. Pride is an awful thing when it causes us to believe we don't need anyone else. And we judge others when they fall short to avoid facing our own shortcomings.

Ever see the movie ;Sphere.?The premise is that the subconscious mind,s thoughts become your reality is pretty spot on with regards to our incarnations. Indeed in the new series; The Ghost Inside my Child, actual testimonials from children in the west remembering their past lives and beyond, the subconscious minds memories come to the surface in a very real way. As we continue to evole the barrier between the unconscious & superconscious becomes thinner allowing one to enter samadhi more easily.See Ramana Maharshi Be as You Are Chapter 12 Experience and Samadhi.

I hear so many people that are a-religious but still say "everything happens for a reason" or express a belief in ghosts. I don't get why someone that rejects religion would even entertain that there's a design to their lives. Maybe you could say it in a metaphorical way and still have it make some sense, but they're not using it that way. They really believe there's something that shapes their lives and that the spirits of dead people hang around. These are people that have been to university, they have degrees. I can only imagine that they haven't really considered their own ideas and the implications.
