I have been canning pretty solid for the last three years, and the only failure I had with a ForJars lid was my error, I creased an edge and it didn't seal, but that was completely on me and how I applied it to the jar. Other than that, it is a jar that is chipped and I didn't catch, again on me for not looking. ForJars has a great product, and I loved your review and comparison to the Ball lids, as I have noticed the same thing. My Ball lids have become my dry storage lids, disposable, not being used to seal things shut, just back ups, because of that button issue. Glad I'm not the only one that has noticed that. Great content!

Just this week alone, I had two Ball lids that stayed down when I broke the seal. Both were fine, but it’s still unnerving. I’m really sold on the ForJars lids.

Sounds like the guys on the floor stop caring. I work as a machinist and I've seen shops go from "stop production till we fix the problems" to "just ship it", due to bad management, and loosing veteran workers who actually quality control that stuff as machines are running. Usually ends up in loosing lots of customers fast, but takes a while for that to settle in.

Its so pretty there, especially in autumn. Sometimes I miss NH. Two decades ago we lived in Hudson briefly, and then Brookline for a couple years. We used to go to Parker's Maple Barn for breakfast as a treat once in awhile (in Mason? I think.), they had the most amazing food. I wouldn't be able to eat most of it these days, but the memories are still delicious. Thanks for sharing about the canning lids. Where we are in Oregon, I haven't been able to even find wide mouth Ball or Kerr canning lids in over two years. And regular mouth usually only with rings, and I definitely dont need any more rings. I'll check out the for jars lids when I run out of what I have.

I need to give them and Superb a try. I honestly haven't had the issues that others have had with the B@11 lids. And I also.have had great luck.with Golden Harvest lids. But, I haven't purchased them in a few years as I stocked up early in the pandemic. So, the issues may be with more recent manufacturing.

Thank you. I've been noticing bent edges on the Ball lids and didn't use them. Yesterday 3 of 6 quart jars failed to seal after pressure canning. I used a new box of Ball lids. 😠 This never happened before! Boy, am I mad about this. I have about 40 boxes of Ball lids, but is it worth ruining more jars of expensive meat? The whole point is to empty my freezer, not put pressure-canned meat back into it. I may go to 4jars after your review.

I have heard they are trying to get them produced here but either way, the quality is far better than Ball. Even new ball jars I purchased in 2024 have had defects on the rims that cause failures. Might have been left over from the issues they had during the pandemic but I am looking for better jars now.

I usually use Ball, but the prices are high and they have been hard to get. I went with some off brands. I had problems with some I got from WalMart and I don't seem to have the knack for the reusable lids. During February, Harvest Right had a give away and one of the channels talked about For Jars lids that works well with using them when you seal and re-seal their freeze fried items in jars. I'm interested in your input and hope to try the For Jar lids soon.

Hi Jack. Not trying to stir up anything but if your lid fails for some reason, wouldn't gas build up inside and pop that Ball lid popper up? I don't do full on canning, only pickling, so I'm no expert. Just the quality of the ForJars lids would have me buying them. Cheers!!
@TheMindfulHomestead
@TheMindfulHomestead Год назад
Fair question. If the seal fails, the gas could escape through the faulty seal and not build up enough to pop the lid. It’s more the uncertainty of it that anything else for me. If I can’t trust the popper, I’d be sketched out trusting the seal too.

I actually had a failed seal on a jar of potatoes (that was a Ball lid) and can answer this question as it pertains to that one jar. The button did not pop back up. Literally, it just gave way and was sitting on top of the jar. It wasn't until I was moving them around the 3 month mark, that I almost poured it out on myself. It was rotten, and that would have been a heck of a mess to clean up. I checked my lid to be sure there was nothing wrong with it visually, and it looked just fine. The jar was not chipped, the potatoes had not siphoned, everything was clean, and no obvious reason for the failure. So I guess it was not a gas build up issue? And out of 40 jars, that was the only one that failed, half were Ball lids, the other half were ForJars.

I have never canned and am getting ready to can whole tomatoes for my first project. I don't understand the popping dilemma. Are you saying the 4jars lid don't pop ever? How do you know they are sealed if they don't pop? I didn't know lids popped when you canned and I am going to be using ball...so they are supposed to make a popping sound when I can them or visually the center goes down and they pop when I open?

I had bought several non-ball/kerr lids not long ago, I lost a dozen pints with the lid failing after a week of seemingly being ok. In the comments on a Homestead Heart video, I saw dozens of people swearing by this brand, especially since it's USA made. I just ordered a crapload, trying to get them before they get overwhelmed with orders with more people making videos on them, ha. I'm 100% sure they'll be of higher quality than most lids out there.

They are still made in China, but I’ll take a product that works over a US made product that doesn’t. The folks that own the company live in Florida. They’re good people and support the homesteading community. I didn’t see Ball, Kerr, or Superb at any of the homesteading events I’ve attended this year.
@TheMindfulHomestead
@TheMindfulHomestead Год назад
@@anasazirose Exactly by being at events. Their sponsorship of events let’s us that host them bring in and pay speakers that help teach others how to be more self reliant. They produce a product that works at a price thrift homesteaders can afford and they support educational enterprises within the small farming and homesteading community. It’s an American based company utilizing overseas manufacturing. You’re welcome to use other brands. We aren’t saying they are bad. But these work too and cost less if someone is concerned about that. I’m not about to bully anyone into buying something just because it’s not what I use. Let’s also not kid ourselves that a canning lid manufacturing line isn’t exactly an employee intensive process. Maybe 2 people on a first shift and 2 on a second shift. About the same job impact as a kiosk in a mall.

Many reasons to LOVE Forjars. Quality materials. Made in USA. Bulk purchase options. Ball was once a company dedicated to food preservation. The company merged and sold several times over the decades. Currently Canning supplies are just a sideline product feom a major glass manufacturer. In my opinion they no longer care about the canning supplies since it's such a fraction of their business.
