Here's something fitness influencers don't seem to understand with all the "Progressive overload" talk. Just because your muscles can handle a weight, that doesn't mean your connective tissues & other fibers of your body can. In fact, they take longer to adapt than your muscles do. Calm down, there's no imminent Saiyan threat against the earth, allow your body to adjust to what you're working with.
@hudson.kemnitz
I had this sternum pain about a year ago. I stopped doing dips altogether. I added dips back in a month or so later. I didn't add weight back for maybe 6 months. I have started weighted dips again without any problem. The most I will do now is 2 plates.
@AESTHETIC-PERFORMANCE
I’ve had Sternum pain from DIPS before. Super common Problem. You can work around it by progressing in reps with dips, and then WHEN you feel comfortable. Add weight. And repeat.
@gangstalkingsimulation1319
The pain no joke...just don't over do them and don't add weight
@ezyfitness5158
Bodyweight dips is more effective less injuries
@celestewilson9139
Ripe old age of 30, you’ve over done it. I’m 58, started at 53. Watch 88 and 93 spotting each other every day. Thanks for tips, can’t do planch push ups. I’ll stick to my full push-ups.
@stuartnickolas503
It’s crazy I broke my sternum like 3 years ago & dips is one of the few exercises that irritates the injury I’ll get a horrible shooting pain in my chest
@kuabarra
The older I get (33 here) I've realized I'm better off sticking with middle to higher reps. I tend to have way less injuries doing this, and generally feel better. I also quit doing dips, at least regularly for years. I just added ring dips back into my routine as a staple but I'll stick with body weight with dips, at least for the foreseeable future
@Moxi_SW
I had the sternum pain when I first started doing dips, however one day it just stopped. And the reason I do weighted dips is because I do my arm workout at home so weighted dips is the only exercise I can do, but even when I was going at a gym, I was still doing dips for my triceps. It's just an exercise a love and I want to get stronger at it
@brucehelppie6119
i agree with you, austin. i'm 69 y/o, still training, and try to avoid exercises that are harmful to my joints. i've stayed away from weighted calisthenics for that reason. i also mostly utilize bodyweight squats and the only weighted squats i do are goblet squats with a 35# kettlebell. if you want to train into old age you may have to abandon kamikaze routines that are self destructive and use more sense in choosing the exercises you work on. i still do some dips because i have a goal of being able to do a muscleup, and it's part of that exercise.
@ddesoso
This video was super informative, I wish I had this information when I got my sternum injury which took me out from training for months.
@joebarrettcarratala3046
I continue to do dips because I don't feel that presure in my chest and it actually helps me build my triceps, It's also an exercise I enjoy doing.
@SavingPilotRyan
I'm relatively novice. Been working out solidly for around 2-ish years with plenty stops and starts in between.
@wethecalis7384
I had sternum pain twice and both happened because I didn’t had a proper warm up before doing weighted dips and also poor technique at the time. Being a streetlifter Competitor and doing very weighted dips it’s very important to have a specific technique and good progression for to lift heavier. If done correctly you won’t have problems
@chrisconrad4521
Very insightful video, thanks Austin!
@KevDecorMusic
Great video. I currently do weighted dips, 110lbs added, and I like it because I “feel” like I’m making progress but… this video has made a lot of sense to me and as a 33 year old I’m making more health conscious choices with my fitness because I’m not trying to be Mr. Olympia lol. Just want to continue honing my aesthetics and further develop good all around strength for life. I’m also incorporating calisthenics so all this adds up to me sticking with body weight dips every now and then and instead, substituting with the mentioned calisthenics variables. Thank you bro. 🤝
@BradleyGibbs
I had costochondritis 2 years ago too... I just stopped doing dips and now I've been working them back in and I'm good.
@giovannidominguez8548
This is a great video man, I like how you talk about working smarter to prolong your time in the gym instead of going to snap city to the point where you can’t gym in the next 10-20 years, definitely not worth it, keep yourself in the gym
