Why I Avoid Working With Other Contractors LIKE THE PLAGUE

When I have worked with other contractors there seems to be a higher probability of issues arising and delays occurring on jobs. We do not have problems like this typically when working directly with homeowners. I explain one specific ongoing job in this video and go into detail on what typically happens with bad contractors. NOT ALL CONTRACTORS ARE BAD. I will say though that in my experience it may be as much as or more than 50% of them are not good. Very good contractors are rare and when you find them save their info.

I have never and will never work for any contractors, rental property slumlords. Homeowners only. New customers always pay 50% before ordering materials, 25% at job start and 25% upon completion. Don’t like the terms, get someone else. I learned my lesson with new customers early on who stuck me with a bunch of materials that took forever to use or never got used.

Legally we cannot do this in California. Deposits have stupidly specific laws and the max you can collect is $1000 and no more than 10%. You can collect progress payments but only once you've started work. In a case like this we have not physically started work. I should have included a timeline they had to honor or something and I'll be doing that moving forward on remodels. I'm really not that upset about this job except that we still have not ironed out details since they decided to remove walls. I just thought this was a good example of why GC's tend to be a pain to work with.

Existing customers that I have a good long history with don’t get charged anything until I am finished with the job. Unfortunately, too many around here are always looking for the best price and hopscotch around from contractor to contractor to find it. I’m glad I don’t live in California.

Have a signed contract outlaying every detail of the installation stating any changes from the original plan are their responsibility, Invoice for your time on the job for meetings, and charge a storage fee for holding the equipment. And get a deposit that covers the equipment cost at the signing of the contract. Around here it's the flippers that get you, they start cheaping out on the job as the money gets tight.

Sound advice and what should be obvious standard operating procedure for an experienced business owner which sadly is overlooked leading to disaster which still amazes me today. Legals and finance first and foremost the work is secondary 💯👍👍👍

I'm a remodel contractor. I specialize in mid to high end interiors. I consider myself a craftsman. I am OCD and I take extreme pride in my work. After 25 years I have finally came to the conclusion that I need to find another career. Dealing with sub contractors and employees have taken the joy out of the job. I spend way too much time on design and obsessing about the detials even on my off hours to make it worth wild anymore. Here I am... 46 years old and at the height of my career and I want to close up shop. lol

I feel you man. I have met all of one GC who I would recommend to people in San Diego but it was at a former employer and I cannot find his number. Most guys across all trades seem to do the bare minimum. Sometimes I get it when I have generals and homeowners breathing down my neck cause they are basically assuming that I am scamming them. Contracting/in home services is so scummy it's insane

@@SurfBrosHVAC I think that there is just a shortage of qualified people. I was at Home Depot yesterday and the head cashier was flustered because one of the cashiers (Austin was his name) had a melt down. Apparently he walked off in the middle of a transaction because he needed some alone time to 'reset'. She told me that this was not the first time that this has happened. How is he not fired? It's scary to think that this is the condition of our society and work force right now. Where do we go from here?

I’d cut my losses, get out of there, and use the unit on another job. I have a 6k Hyperheat Mitsubishi with base pan heater. Cools fine no problem, but in the winter the thing is constantly going into defrost. It can run 5-15 min, I always hear the compressor just before it stops, and the indoor unit stops. Units have been in service for two years. I heard there was a firmware update that may fix it, or low refrigerant. There is no ice on the outside unit when it goes into defrost, assuming that’s what it’s doing. Seems to be noticeable below 50 degrees. Thanks. It would be nice to see service call videos on some of these Mitsubishi units, I don’t see too many out there. Love the channel.

Here in the uk I avoid working for builders or Pakistani customers as I've had nothing but trouble with them.. builders want a cheap cheap cheap quote.. Pakistani are the same but they agree the price until the jobs done then haggle with you, then don't bother paying..

Can’t raise price cause the contract is signed and I didn’t specify there would be a price change for delays. The new GC did tell me that he would get back to me on new plans for running the line and that if the work is more they would pay more. Still have not heard anything since I was there in this video. The unit is gonna be non returnable at this point so it’s gotta get installed somewhere😂😂
