In this video, I explain why I became a traveling Certified Surgical First Assistant, how much money I made before I started traveling and compare it to how much I make now.
I also talk about the travel opportunities for allied health professionals (surgical techs, ultrasound techs, medical assistants, etc).

Hi, I am curious how you were able to become a first assistant without becoming a surgical tech prior to that? I was under the impression that I would need to be certified through the NBSTSA as a tech then work for a year or more before I could even be excepted into a first assistant program ? Wow ! This is so informative

Hello, I attended an accredited program to become a CSA. All I needed was a 4 year degree and meet their prerequisites!

@@SinCityVirgini look into any technical or colleges that offer the program. It’s a two year degree. Then to be certified you have take an exam.

What are their expectations of you as an assist for the most part? How do you assist with out knowing the individual surgeons in depth?

I know my role as a Surgical Assistant. Everything that I learned in school, clinicals and my previous jobs come into play. As you advance further into your role, you know what is expected to a certain extent. Every surgeon does have their preferences but for the most part, the responsibilities of an assistant is universal.

Surgical assistants are like the second surgeon. You’re helping the surgeon with exposure and hemostasis. You can help close the incision with sutures, apply dressings, etc. A surgical tech helps with instrumentation and gives the surgeon the right tools they need to perform surgery.

I didn’t really use textbooks, I used study guides provided by our instructors and also reviewed flash cards on quizlet. The exam had a lot of anatomy from what I remember. I passed it the first time.

Some of the agencies I’ve been with are medical solutions, Aya healthcare, AMN and alliance medical staffing. Sometimes if you go on indeed and type in “certified surgical assistant travel jobs” you can see other agencies as well

Surgical tech keeps the sterile field sterile and passes instruments to the surgical team. A Surgical Assistant is like a second surgeon where we stand across from them and help them with the surgery.

@@purplehero1002 it’s actually going way better than expected. Just finished my first hospital rotation and had a great preceptor who taught me a lot. My favorite specialty rn is ob/gyn and my worst is ortho. Just a lot happening in ortho but everyone helps you out a lot

Yes, that is what I mean which of the companies for travel SA is good I am in Florida and it is very difficult to get a contract for FA travel if you can refer me one Thank you and keep going

@@davidencarnation Aya and American mobile are the companies I have traveled with so far. Host healthcare is also good but I haven’t signed on with them. Look up “American surgical professionals” they have a few contract jobs in Florida

At work even as a pharmacy technician we weren’t aloud to discuss pay with each other. We would get written up if we did. A lot of hospitals do this

You can either choose to do everything yourself ( which is the best option )or they can pay for everything. They are not really ‘ paying ‘ its coming out of your money like your pay stubs . They just set everything up for you . And why did i say it was the best option? Well because maybe you could have your own van with your bed in it for your living style and you dont have to drive back nd fourth from your apartment you can just park your van and leave it there . Its a waste of gas , you have a bathroom/shower, and cafeteria in the hospital. You have everything you need
