I have the RP, but now I also own the R7. For me I use both for shooting. As i need a wide angle and dynamic range of RP. But I need the speed and AF from the R7 for bird and aviation photo. For me as an hobbyist photographer, both body was less expensive and give me the best of both world. The other thing that R7 excel is to be able to handheld at more lower shutter speed due to it having IBIS. I've tried both with RF 28mm f2.8 and 50mm f1.8. The R7 give me a lot more keeper than the RP even though the R7 is already 1.6X cropping.

I think there's a place for the EOS RP but it loses virtually every battle with the R7 except for cost and dynamic range (and not by a lot on the DR). Most every comparison outside of those two and the R7 smokes the RP by a large margin. The RP is really only good for when you have a lot of time to make a decision to take a still photo. It's so slow that you can't take any sort of action shots (and by action I mean anything moving). I'm not an action photographer but I have birds outside my office window that land on the vines. To get a shot with them flying I just bump my M6II (or R7 if I had one) up to 14fps, focus and rattle off a second of shots then grab the best one and go back to work. At 5 fps (4 with AF!) the RP will miss getting the wings in the right spot, I know because I have some slower cameras and I spend a lot longer trying to get the shot even at 9fps of my M6I. For video the RP can't compare to other full frame cameras because of the massive crop but the R7 already has a 4K 1.6 crop so the frame of view is pretty comparable however, and this is a big however the RP loses it's DPAF in 4K mode. This means you really have an EOS M3 at that point and anyone who's owned any of those contrast detect AF cameras know the 4K video is mostly unusable so it should be considered a 1080p video camera which maintains DPAF. I don't remember if the RP is pixel/line binned but that would also be important to know. This means the RP's main strength is still photography where dynamic range is important. That's really it's main strength and even then it's not much of one. The R7 is just superior in every way - DPAF II, full non-pixel binned 4K, 3-6 times faster burst mode, IBIS etc. it's just not a comparison. I don't think the RP is a lump of coal but people should know what they're getting. In most cases the R10 probably competes better with the RP than the R7. The RP would still win on dynamic range by a bit (maybe) but lose on most everything else, just by a smaller margin. I haven't compared the RP and the R10 but that may be a more interesting and closer race. Oh, one afterthought that would be an advantage of the RP - wide angle. Trying to get decent wide angle lenses for a crop sensor is always a struggle. But we're talking anything wider than 24 mm (FF). Above 24mm and there's no real difference, you just do the math and buy the right lens (50mm instead of 85mm etc).
@GrantMcWilliams
@GrantMcWilliams 2 года назад
I will add a comment to my own comment. I wasn't sure there was dynamic range information available for the R7 yet but I found some. Here's a comparison of the RP and the R7. Up to 1000 ISO the R7 is better, at the lowest ISO it's double that of the RP (maybe, I suspect the test). At 1000 it's roughly equal. At 51,000 ISO the RP has about a 10-12% advantage. Not significant. It's important to note that if you have an R7 at 12,000 ISO you have exactly the same dynamic range as the RP at 24,000. I don't know of any one that runs their ISO that high but if you want the same dynamic range of the FF sensor just half the ISO and carry on or stay under 1000 ISO. www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm#Canon%20EOS%20R7

If a shallow DOF is an important factor you’ll get way more of it for way cheaper with the RP… Example, a Viltrox 85mm F1.8 is $400 but to match that depth of field and field of view using a crop sensor you’d need a 50mm F1.2 lens, we’re talking $1,300 for EF or $2,200 for RF. Or a $999 EF 135mm F2 on the RP looks roughly like an 85mm F1.2 ($2,000+) would on a crop sensor. Slap the 50 or 85 F1.2, or sigma’s 105mm F1.4 Art on the RP and you’ll get looks that the crop sensor can’t replicate at all. So for something like portraiture the R7 can’t compete.
@GrantMcWilliams
@GrantMcWilliams 2 года назад
@@andrewdoeshair Right, there are some cases where DOF is *harder* to do with a crop sensor mainly because of the lenses that companies choose to make since their target so far with RF mount has been full frame. I don't think that a comparison between a budget Viltrox 85/f1.8 and a Canon 50mm/f1.2 is really fair though. You could put an EF Samyang 85 f/1.4 on the R7 for $600 and it would give you a pretty similar image to the $999 EF 135. It all depends on what is available and in what focal lengths. The real advantage to full frame is that shallow DOF is *easier*. Most anything that can be done on FF can be done on a crop sensor if the lens is available until you get to really wide angle or really fast FF lenses. The reality though is that F/1.2 isn't very practical on a FF sensor as the depth of field is just too narrow. Not many people really want the end of a model's eye lashes in focus when her eye isn't. I find myself going with about f/2 on FF for nice pleasing DOF or f/1.4 on crop sensors. For wide angle and extreme depth of field I'd go FF without hesitation. For the best dynamic range I'd go with (new) FF sensors. The sensor in the RP does not have better dynamic range in a studio setting which is the RPs strength. It does have marginally better dynamic range at higher ISOs though. Most other things the crop sensor is perfectly fine at and for longer focal lengths the crop sensor may have price and size advantages.

@future62
@future62 2 года назад
@@andrewdoeshair with EF glass you can use a speed booster adapter to get most of the DoF back. Not perfect but possible. If you absolutely need every last drop of shallow DoF then yea go FF. But I'd wager you would need to look at photos side by side to see the difference in 1 stop of DoF. I def do. It's not that big of a deal. At least not to sacrifice literally every other aspect of the camera, at least IMO. I currently shoot FF and had an EOS R for 2 years but in the RF lineup the R7 is the only camera I'd consider. If the lens situation improves enough I might switch again.

Umm..have you even tried the R7 before making this video? Because you seem to have read the specs and made a video about it, having almost no clue what you are talking about. RP uses basically the same sensor as a 6D Mark II, which is 5 years old, as for the R7 which uses a similar sensor to 90D which is 2 years newer. RP has a horrible Dynamic Range and I would bet the R7s is better. Better lowlight? I also kinda doubt that. DIGIC 8 vs DIGIC X processors as well. Its also not half the price - 1099eur vs 1499eur with rf-ef adapter. And you also have no clue about cinematography, since you're talking about FullFrame sensors in cinematography, which have been around for maybe 2-3 years, and not even fully incorporated in the movie industry. Get your facts straight and test out the equipment before posting this kinds of videos, please.

Great deals are still possible in 2024… It's so much easier to buy stuff than to go outside at 5 in the morning to take shots of the sunrise :). I think that the R7 is probably a more complete camera in addition to offer dual card slots and a bigger battery, because you can do more with it, but there is no question that the RP is better at some tasks. @VirtualTourPhotographer

I own both. I'd debate some of the points here. I've had consistently better results with the R7 in low light. It's also stuck with a sensor that's exposed when changing lenses compared to the R7's sensor covered up when you change lenses. The R7 is also far faster in focus.. Bokeh can be overrated especially when most of the time, people don't shoot (I don't) at anything less than F4. The blurry background has its place, but both professionally/commercially and for personal, more in focus is often more valuable. Miss focus at a shallow depth of field and you have no room for recovery. And the battery.... it's terrible. I also only shoot with non-crop lenses bar 1 the 24 pancake ef-s (about 12 lenses) - What I do like about the RP is that it's quiet, simple, light, and a darn good backup and very helpful when shooting multicam video as long as have continuous power on it and feeding it direct from the mini hdmi. If you've been a Canon shooter with LPE6 batteries too, then that's just another reason to go R7 - carrying two battery formats around when shooting with multiple bodies is a royal pain.

@babymixswing2269
@babymixswing2269 2 года назад
There is an interesting thing. The IBIS of R5/R5 is not well designed. Because it is the first time. If you don't believe it, go find a video about the 16mmF2.8 lens. You will find that if it is R5/R6 and 16mm, then the picture is ugly and twitching. But RP+16mm, no problem. Although Canon has just upgraded the firmware to 1.6, it is only a little improvement, and the surrounding area of the screen is still twitching. Therefore, I think there is something wrong with the IBIS design of R5/R6.

According to many tests, Canon RP is not better in dynamic range. It comes around 12 stops. Even my 80D has 13+ stops and is significantly older than the R7 Sensor. However, those APS-C sensors drastically lose image quality at higher ISO, while the RP practically does not perform worse until ISO 1600. However, I never really fell in love with those Canon APS-C sensors. I don't know if it is the strong AA filter, but they never seem to be as sharp as they could be. Since I use my lenses with an Adapter on Fuji cameras which don´t have an AA filter, I can really see what they are actually able to perform. However, I recently bought a RP as I still have some Canon lenses. They work on Fuji with an Fringer adapter, but somehow it is not the same. Some really are made for full frame. However, on the RP, I finally got the image quality I was looking for in the APS-C models, even though it is an inferior sensor on paper. It is definitely not for everyone. As you mentioned, sports and wildlife photographers are not the target audience. Also its not designed for pros. Its an camera made for amateurs that want to have fun and want to capture HQ images. For me, it is perfect to give a selection of vintage lenses a second life. A lot of their character comes from unique bokeh and vignetting that is way better pronounced in full frame.

Buddy, A LOT RUBBISH opinions masquerading as facts in this video! It's a shame, because the viewers of your channel like the casual down to earth approach to video and photography subjects you normally present and will take your advice as gospel. I hope that you will revisit the subject once you also own an R7 and redeem yourself by presenting facts as facts rather than opinions as facts. I look forward to your future real life comparison between the 2 models, because this video wasn't it. (Can you point to tests done on R7 dynamic range? No. Is general comparison between full frame and crop sensors still valid as it was a decade ago? No. Due to wide range of manufacturing technologies the only way to say which sensor performs better, is to compare individual sensors. In fact the EOS RP dynamic range in low ISO is poor even when comparing to some APSC sensors. "Poor crop lens choices"? R7 and R10 are the only cameras in Canon's history which natively work with Canon's 4 lens ranges: EF, EF-S (both via native adapter), RF, RF-S. Not even mentioning 3rd party speed boosters. (Credit to Canon for finally sorting out that issue over the previous EF-S and EF-M conundrum). There is nothing wrong with RF lenses performance on Canon EOS R7. In fact the AF works BETTER, because R7 has a higher spec'ed CPU then EOS RP. APSC lens equivalence: you gave an example of EF 40mm lens "becoming alive" on RP. Canon made an equivalent APS-C lens first, it's called EF-S 24mm - it does exactly what it should. And since when having less megapixels is better for landscape photography?? And the majority of Hollywood cameras are APS-C sensors in form of Super35. There are other points which you have not addressed like user interface, weather protection, memory card implementation, which are inferior on RP yet important for general usage.)
@markwiemels
@markwiemels 2 года назад
I will have an R7 tomorrow, I have compared the RP to the M6 Mark II, which appears to be the almost the same sensor, but I will correct any incorrect assumptions. I’m not sure if you missed it, but I said that “every bit of technology, aside from the sensor, is superior in the R7”. A few side notes, the 24mm ef-s lens is unlikely to resolve 32mp, and Hollywood has moved on from super 35, it’s mostly larger format now. I do take your larger point, thanks for the input.

A lot of this is just flat out wrong. R7 has better IQ, AF, IBIS and has IBIS. Crop RF lens selection sucks but adapted EF FF advantages can be brought back with a speed booster. I shoot FF but people put way too much weight on being able to say "I shoot FF". Just because a camera has a bigger sensor doesn't mean it's automatically better and the RP is a clear case of that. It's half the price of the R7 because it's an inferior camera in every way but sensor dimensions.

Or just strictly landscape, portrait stills. But even at that price point, once you add a lens, you're at 1,500 if you use the RF to EF adapter, and a used EF lens or 3rd party. I'd just probably pick up a used m6mk2 that is cheaper, faster, lighter, and has dpaf in 4k with more megapixels for cropping and for landscape, along with the sigma 1.4 trio. If you're doing strictly wildlife.....stay away from the RP

Fair warning. Beware 3rd party RF EF adapters. I bought one to save 50 bucks and after 2 days of shooting and lens changes i took a closer look inside my sensor area. They were using a much softer metal and the lens changes had been shaving off metal flakes into my sensor area. Thankfully i cleaned it out got away without damage, but i recommend spending an extra 50 bucks off the bat for the official adapter to save yourself the headache.

Both RP and R7 uses old sensors. Only that R7 is produced on a new proces. You are comparing using requirements that are valid for landscape and portrait photography. If you are a hybrid shooter then R7 is the way to go. Also you are saying a lot without a proof. When the RP was released DP review said that the video quality was one of the worst of camera in his price. Another point is that the dynamic range of old sensor in RP is the same as the new APS-C sensor of Fuji with at that time was in Fuji x-T4 and now Fuji X-S10. So Canon could design a new APS-C sensor using new technology. Simply they didn’t chose for marketing purposes called the Canon Cripplehamer.

In the early 2000s (2007?) I remembered seeing a photo shot with a Nikon D200 (APS-C, 10 MP) in National Geographic. I thought it was stunning. So stunning that later, I bought a D300, my principal camera, for years. I love the advances cameras have gained; however, good photos are taken by good photographers, not cameras. That said, the right camera for the job makes a photographer's work easier. FF sensors are great at giving you a blurred background, and tiny 1" sensors are fantastic for giving you zoom power in a tiny package. I now have many cameras, including a 6D Mark II. when that camera came out, reviewers complained about its dynamic range. However, it was better than the 5D Mark III, which was praised by the same influencers. When I recently took graduation portraits of my son, I used a FF camera, but when I was in his school's arena for the graduation ceremony, I used an old Sony RX10 with a 1" sensor (due to the size of the camera). I was happy with both sets of images.

RP has lower dynamic range (R7's RAW files are more flexible as well), it's silent mode is barely useable (you have to use a specific "silent" mode), it doesn't have İBİS, it's EVF is inferior, it's AF is good but nowhere as good as R7 (which rivals top cameras). Full frame sensors have a higher absolute number of dedicated lenses that are great than cropped sensors have. There is no technical reason for this - but amateurs tend to buy cheaper cropped sensors/lenses - proffessionals tend to buy expensive full frame sensors/lenses - its just a tradition. Full frame lenses may work fine on cropped sensors but are a considerable waste of glass/weight/money and a suboptimal design for cropped sensors. A f/2 cropped lense can be compared - exactly - to an f/2.8 full frame lense on every parameter: height, lenght, weight, design, depth of field, optical performance, geometry, etc.. The only limit for cropped sensors is sensor area, that is: the number of pixels can be twice as high on full frame sensors, so if more than 50 Mp, low light noise and dynamic range/ highlights are very important your work - then go full frame. Also go full frame if the new or used lense selection is important to you - in the future. But don't buy into the myth that full frame is a superior optical format due to lense design and depth-of-field. Example: an expensive well designed f/1.4 16 mm cropped lense - ought to have similar performance and price to an f/2 24 mm full frame lense; the two lenses should have the same lense design, but one focuses the light on a small sensor - and the other spreads it thin on a big sensor. Full frame systems have much bigger lense line-ups, but the best 10% cropped lenses are better than the worst 60% full frame lenses.

The EOS RP has worse dynamic range at base ISO, but it catches up at higher ISO values. It can even match Sony A7RIV going ISO 1600 or above. On the other hand, at the price point of R7, the competition is quite fierce, all with various trade-offs. Just to name a few: EOS R, Panasonic S5, G9, GH5, Sony A7 III, A7C, Nikon Z5, Olympus EM-1 MK 3, EM-1X. It's really up to the buyer to decide what trade-offs and what features they are looking for.

Would agree, the RP stands out for its value, especially used.

I would recommend the EOS RP for those who are looking in the $1500 to $1800 range as well. You get full-frame, 30MP, and it's a slightly newer camera.

Your Video got me thinking again. Almost pulled trigger on R7. What are your thoughts for R6?

R6 is great for video, but the megapixel count is a little low for photo, in my opinion.

glad you put the R7 in a better light toward the end of your video, I was getting worried that i had ordered the wrong camera, I was told you can have an average camera and get great photos if you practice to be a better photographer

I used the RP before moving to the R3. Never had an issue really. Once you know how to expose your photos you shouldn’t have an issue. I used it for years. Loved it. Jared the battery life and 1 card slot.

I think the rp is even better than the eos r and eos r6 I’m not even kidding ! The photos are literally identical and the video is more than enough for the price…please don’t waste your money to those ones the rp is more than enough even after 5 years
