Why I bought the Mac Studio...

Apple just released their new desktop computer the Mac Studio. The Mac studio is the first regular Mac destkop we have seen in quite sometime offering a mid to high range option for prosumer and professional users alike who can get really great processing power in a small form factor. However, after owning a 14 inch M1 Max MacBook Pro with its amazing power, why am I planning on switching over to the Mac Studio and am I making a mistake?

Can't wait for you and the other RU-vidrs to put these through their paces and see the results you get out of them. I've been pushing a 2010 Mac Pro, 6 core, for 12 years now and I don't have the will or energy to try and upgrade it anymore. Though I will miss the upgradability it gave me, it's just time to get a new machine and I'm thinking this is it. Best

I think Apple has made a big mistake discontinuing the 27" iMac. Been using the 27" iMac since 2009.
@gskibum
@gskibum 2 года назад
I think it is one of their best moves in a long time. I manage probably 300 Macs, and those iMacs were by far the worst. Unless it was all SSD inside. Those Fusion drives were utter junk. And SATA alone was even worse. Fusion and SATA were embarrassingly slow, and those stupid spin drives broke. Especially the Seagates. It also was lame to lose a whole computer because the display was physically damaged or due to component failure. The displays also aged rather quickly and were usually born with poor uniformity. No, I'm not at all a fan of the all-in-one form factor of the iMac. One can attach any quality, grade, or size of external display without that barely adequate iMac display being in the way. Finally people will have to think about specs before buying, instead of playing that tedious & stupid upgrade the hardware later game. For crying out loud, know your needs when making purchasing decisions. If you're doing video, stick a crowbar in your wallet and get video specs. But the necessary tools of your trade. If you're sending recipes to the old ladies at the bridge club, get those specs. But don't go and be surprised when old lady specs can't handle video pro needs and want to upgrade CPU, RAM, and internal storage later.

These information videos are important to a lot of people it helps us determine what we should get and why we should get it, the technology is getting so complicated that it can be very confusing to a lot of people who are not sure of what to buy, when it comes to computers we just use them to do our work whether it be video, photo or music we're not really on top of things when it comes to technology and we can't know everything nobody can, it's hard enough just trying to figure out our own programs whether it be video or photo or music 3-D modeling or complex rendering.

My big issue with the studio display is the lack of HDR capabilities .. especially for the price. LG has a new 21:9 Ultrawide HDR monitor with Thunderbolt 4 and 5K resolution which seems like it could be a great Ultrawide option for the Mac Studio: LG UltraWide 40WP95C-W 39.7" 21:9 Curved FreeSync 5K2K HDR IPS Monitor

Something I haven’t seen any reviewer cover but would be curious to know, is how your iMac being used as a display for the new Ultra Mac compares with the new Mac display, this can be done via airplay and supports any cable or wireless connection. The reason this interests me is the base iMac is a similar price to macs new display. As the new display is limited to 60 Hertz refresh rate I can’t imagine there being a huge difference regarding latency. PS. When you getting the new Mac Pro lol

You know, my late 2015 27-inch iMac has the ghosting effect that you mentioned with the LG 5K (not sure if other 5k iMac owners are having similar ghosting problem?). Other than that, I am very happy with my iMac. The fan does get a bit loud when the real-time stock quote starts streaming during market opening hours. The ghosting is quite annoying. But replacing the screen panel doesn't seem rationale as I hope to get a quieter Apple Silicon big screen iMac, when it is available. Now, if the 27-inch iMac is killed, my next Mac will probably be a MacBook Pro with an external display.

You know what, I have a late 2015 iMac 27'' and I've recently started to get the Ghosting on my desktop screen. It's not effected any of my design work but It's started to creep in more and more, Icons on the desktop especially. I've just upgraded the RAM to it's max 32GB with 4 x 8GB cards instead of buying the same generation iMac Pro 27'' but it's not really improved things much. It still gets the colour wheel of death now and then. I'm thinking of getting a iMac Pro, but unsure weather its a good idea or not with all the new stuff coming out.

I have a late 2014 bought in 2015 and just before the 3 yr Apple Care expires I had a several ghosting issues too. Got the display replaced and this was fixed. However, the colours on the borders were never good, kind see as yellower. it is not a deal breaker to me but I understand a video and photo professional would be highly impacted by that. Last year, I upgraded the internal SSD to expand useful life time for a few more years and disregarding the issue with border colours it still works very well to me. Saving money apart for a Studio Display and Mac in a few years when the iMac turns 10!

I have the 2015 27” as well, no ghosting so far. I don’t like how slow it is for video rendering even with just iMovie, but it’s great for everything else I do with it.

Do you just keep all the footage on your Mac after you’re done? I doubt you need more than 300GB at MOST per project/session. Once you’re finished why not just send all of the files to a storage server or just an external HDD? Ofc if you use your pc as a database of all your raw footage and projects not even 8TB is going to save you in a year or so.

You go girl! love the version you spec'd out. Ultra is the way to go with all those encoders (that make a massive difference) and saving on the gpu and spending on the ram and storage was smart. I maxed out a 16" back when they dropped and love everything about it. People were recommending skimping on the storage and the ram at the time but my ram usage is consistently over 40gb and that 8tb is oh so sweet. Look forward to seeing a review when you get it in hand.

Congrats on your purchase,Greg! But I was thinking, if you were gonna drop so much money and speck it out so much, you should have went all out on everything and ramp to the max the GPU cores too :v Curious to see you attempt gaming on it :D I am aware it is not a gaming machine, it lacks the dedicated gaming decoders intel and nvidia shiz have,plus gotta run through layers of translation from x86 or even worse from windows emulation,then x86 rosetta translation, but his makes it all the more fun. P.S. if you "did it for me" you should have bought two Thranduil dolls for the same money ,instead :v

I bought the Max with the 1 TB chip. What impressed me the most was the I/0. You get 200 Gb of data interface. 160 from the Thunderbolt, 10 from the Ethernet, 10 from the USB A on the back and 20 from the USB C on the front. That is a-lot of future proof. I don't understand the full implications of the M1 Max yet, but I can see that the architecture is a paradigm shift. I'm replacing a late 2014 Mac Mini. I already have the the Mac mouse and number pad keyboard. I have a really nice Dell 4K multi input HDR10 monitor. The Mac Mini controls my three Windows Computers via Ethernet. I see an OWC Express 4M2 4-Slot M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure w/ Thunderbolt3 Ports in my future. I already have 4 1TB drives to put in it, but over time I plan to put four 4TB drives in it .

I simply can't imagine working only with a MacBook screen. I need that bigger form-factor being a 27 inch external screen. I also waited 7 years with upgrading to a new Mac, previously using 27inch iMac 2012. But finally in October 2021 Apple showed a new MacBook with stuff I needed - ports, speed and performance, gorgeous screen and insane battery life for a 16 inch laptop. Studio Display would be a great addition to my current setup. Thanks for the review of this Mac, I found it really helpful. Take care!

The base model of the Mac Studio will be a replacement for my 2010, mac mini. While, my vintage mac mini has a headphone jack, USB "A" ports, SD card reader, and HDMI 1.0 port; I will miss its built-in DVD super-drive (smile...smile).
@ronkemperful
@ronkemperful 2 года назад
@@transitengineer Agree absolutely, the DVD will be missed. However, I bought a LG DVD burner-player from Microcenter for only 29 dollars which was immediately recognized by my iMac and it works even better than the Apple external drive, which was 3 times more expensive. But, the cost of admission for the Mac Studio is a bit rarified for me, so I will bide my time before any upgrade.
@transitengineer
@transitengineer 2 года назад
@@ronkemperful Well, for myself the cost of the "Mac Studio" is very reasonable. This is because, starting with my first Apple computer an All-in-One 5400 in 1997, all my systems have been around $2,000 dollars (US). What makes me made at Steve Jobs was that he never supported the Blue Ray DVD format or another HD DVD format. You have to buy third party software and a third party Blue Ray DVD player and burner comb.

I agree that this a great prosumer Mac. I had the Mac G4 Cube back in the day and Loved It. I think it was the best Mac design ever and then they flipped to Intel and made it obsolete. I’ve been struggling with the M1 Mac Mini with 16Gbs in music production. The Mini doesn’t quite make it for running Logic Pro. I would get memory errors at around 90+ tracks. The best thing about my M1Mini was it runs soooo cool. Apple silicon is such a Great Leap Forward. Even the base model of Mac Studio should fix all the issues I have now. Like “dongle hell” and memory issues. Thanks Greg for your insights.

I order the Mac Studio with M1 max, 512GB storage, and 64GB RAM. I went low storage because I have a few external drives. When the M1 Mac mini came out, I did the same. Maxed the RAM and went with 512GB storage. All apps go onto the internal storage with files on external drives. Plus I love the HUBs that fit perfectly on top of or under the mini that can fit 2 SSD drives in them. Then with the Studio being the exact same footprint as the M1 mini, I'll be able to just move that HUB onto the Studio and it'll look great. I also don't do any video editing though, so I get why you'd need more internal storage. I'm upgrading to the studio because the M1 mini just lacked the power I needed. Always ran into low RAM issues & even had the mini crash multiple times by just being on for a while (days).

The only 5k options in the 27inch form is the LG Ultrafine 27inch, which also had a built in webcam. There was also the Dell 27 inch 5k which has since been discontinued. The only other option that's close is the 34WK95U from LG, and ultrawide at 5120x2160. Dell does make a 32 inch 8k monitor which would be similar in color performance to the apple monitor.

It's like the other manufactures abandoned that size for the ultra-wides. I need multiple 27" monitors for multi-tasking, full screen 3D CAD on one, business management on the other(s). NOT one giant single ultra widescreen. I now feel justified. Cheers ;)

Additionally I might just wait a year or two for them to really take advantage of everything they can. Give Apple another 3 years on 2nm or 3nm EUV and possibly 8 or more dies faster than an M1 by more than 30-50% and that’s something I would certainly invest in. That would be something far faster than a 3990X w/ 4 RTX 3090s Something to consider though, in that time we will be 2 GPU generations and 3 more CPU generations ahead on mature Pcie 5.0 or even Pcie 6.0. So it will be mostly convenience and form factor that sells these things. So we might have a M2 or M3 Ultra that would be like 4x M1 Ultras but with 30-50% faster per core speeds. But by then we might be facing 32-64 core CPUs from AMD/Intel with double the IPC of current chips with proper Hyper Threading. And 4 way HT/SMT is in the works. Add in that the next two GPUs gens will double performance and on the high end GPU perf will go up 4-5x over and 3TB of RAM will be a thing. And all of that is consumer tier no HEDT.

You should be able to get similar speed with internal storage by using thunderbolt external SSDs, or else might be worth it to get Mac Pro (whenever that is released with ARM based processor) so you can add more internat SSD storage by using PCIe lanes.

Hi Greg I just bought A MacBook Pro 16 inch M1 Max, 64 GB of unified memory And one terabyte of solid-state drive storage my question is since the new station from Apple is out how long will it be until my computer is obsolete?

I have a 2013 base MacBook Pro still being used daily if that gives you any indication how long they last if you’re not worried about not having latest greatest thing

I have really loved my 24" iMac though...suprising because I thought it wouldn't be able to handle the same load as my old iMac Pro. But it crushes RED footage and pretty much anything I throw at it.

I am going to wait a little bit. Need to see it's relatively bug-free before making the move. I may get a refurbished one to save a few bucks.

May i ask why you have such a high usage of RAM? I use 16gm of ram on my m1 pro macbook pro, and I use Premiere pro, After effect, and illustration at the same time. But my 16 ram macbook is still fine with current work flow.

To hear that you keep using you Macbook Pro 14" WITHOUT a monitor was an eye opener. I've been obsessing over getting a 24" monitor for my MBP 14" not really buying into the more expensive options... and not thrilled by the affordable ones (aren't we all? LOL) I just keep browsing and hoping... Sure, the Studio Display sounds nice... I can't at $1.6k plus 16% sales tax (I'm in Mexico). No way!! No way!!... So for now... I 'll just keep using my MBP as is... I'm sure I'd hate to notice a significant downgrade after what I paid for this computer only to have a crappy display... Nice video, good thoughts! Thanks.

Yeah it’s expensive to do both! I The 14” display is so nice i just can’t use something that is far worse. It has spoiled me.

For my last video, I found sidecar very useful. I set up my iPad Pro on a stand and hooked it up with my MBP to play the video. I then had all my other Premiere Pro tools and windows on my computer. It also meant that when someone who needed to see the progress of the video came in, I could keep the laptop on my lap and it was easy for them to watch and critique what I had done so far.

My wife bought an IBM PS/2 when she was writing her graduate thesis in 1986. The salesman told her, “trust me: you will *never* need more than 128k of RAM!” I just ordered the Mac Studio Max Ultra and yeah, it’s way more than I need *now*, but seeing as how it’s replacing my 2008 Mac Pro - which was way more than I needed *then*, I feel pretty confident it will meet my needs for whatever new things come down the pike in the next 10+ years. Now that this capability exists, devs will write applications for it.

quick question; Basic M1 chip not as fast as M1 Max? does single core score come into concern with these M1 chips? How does it effect latency for midi processing?

A reviewer I watched yesterday has suggested that Mac Studio may obsolete the need for Apple to release a new iMac Pro. What if Apple simply bundles base Mac Studio, 1TB SSD upgrade, Studio Display, keyboard and mouse into a single SKU? Bundle cost would be $4096, or about $800 less than iMac Pro when released. Is there be a compelling reason to buy an all-in-one rather than this bundle for professional use? The "studio" brand arguably puts this in the same market space as iMac Pro, space-gray keyboard and mouse option included.

I bought a maxed out iMac Pro in 2017 for around $13K. I've now owned it for just over 4 years. The performance gain/difference of this Mac Studio is amazingly faster and large enough difference that I just had to buy it. Since I already own the new 14" M1 Max MacBook Pro, the only way I could truly justify buying the Mac Studio was to buy it maxed out with the M1 Ultra. I couldn't buy an equivalent desktop chip to my MacBook. It just wouldn't make sense. I was really hoping for a Mini LED 27" Display and for some crazy reason, I thought Apple would release a much cheaper Mini LED than what the current XDR cost, since my maxed out M1 Max MacBook Pro cost under $5K with a 14" Mini LED and includes the computer, storage, etc... it just kinda made sense that maybe Apple would release a 27" Mini LED for around $2K or $2.5K. That didn't happen, but I guess the up side is that we're not having to pay $5K for the new tech display to go with the Mac Studio. I hope the color calibration on this new monitor is close to damn good for post production grading! My delivery date is May 11 - 25. What's yours?
