You lost me at "I've not actually seen it" ;-) I'm on the other end of this and I think the Aliens transfer is one of the best ones I've seen. I enjoy movies and was all over DVD when it came out on my widescreen CRT as it looked so much better than the old VHS. Then HD TVs came out with Blu-ray and I was disappointed with the amount of film grain. The higher pixel count enhanced the grain and I hated it as the picture could look so much better. Then 4k arrived and the film grain remained for the most part with some companies overdoing it with the DNR, Predator springs to mind. This made it look sharper, no to little grain, but skin didn't look right. The new Alien transfer has the latest AI at removing the grain, and adding detail, and I think it looks stunning. A very small amount of grain remains but it's very minimal but the detail is quite defined that I keep seeing new things every time I watch it, and I've watched Aliens a lot over the years. I'm hoping this new AI will be used on a lot more 4k transfers of older films as it is so much better than DNR. I get that some people like to see the film grain as that's how it used to be, but I've always wanted it gone as it spoils a detailed picture on the latest UHD TVs and DNR wasn't the best option.
I just finished aliens on 4k. Before I say what's going to SOUND like I'm talking crap, please read the words, not what you think I'm saying because I'm not throwing shade. This transfer is fine. So many youtubers complaining, I feel, are just justifying their existence. RU-vid is a primary income for many. So examples like this... its people trying WAY TO HARD to make controversy for popularity and clicks. Or make themselves seem very appealing in what they say because they make themselves seem so smart about it. Does this look different, yes. It's clear and so much more detailed znd deep. MAYBE, Some literally wont like the change, but make up your own mind because you have allowed others to CHOOSE for you what you are going to enjoy. I mean. If you spend 28 bucks and it sucks and that's going to break the bank..then yeah be choosy. But I think way too many people are being told how to think and act. Even in their hobbys. Heck you don't own it, and YOUR headline is " why you should cancel"
I just watched it and agree as a purist and as someone who authors/encodes discs for a living (who loathes too much DNR). It is different but also the clearest transfer we've seen while really well considered for the most part.
This poor soul hasn't even screened the new version. Wow! He can't spend a few dollars to form his own opinion? That's pretty sad. I screened this new addition on my 125" 4K projection system and over 3000 watts of audio in my dedicated screening room. The bottom line is fairly simple: Aliens looks FANTASTIC. Detail retention is superb while noise/grain is 90% gone without hurting the film-look. Color is the best of all versions and if you have a big screen, this is pretty amazing. FYI: I'm in the film biz and have shot 16mm, 35,, and all of the digital formats. I know a few things about IQ, color and grain. The most outstanding aspect of Aliens is the screenplay. Cameron was 100% right about the grain and qualities haunting the earlier versions. The grain was horrendous, even for the time. It wasn't distracting because audiences were caught up in a great story. But the IQ was weak with so much grain and that has been remedied. This is Cameron's movie and it's probably his best. He gets to decide on the presentation. There are shots, here and there, where I might have backed off on the NR, but then it's not my movie. I also don't know what type of system the film was finalized on, but we can assume it's better than what most people have at home. Aliens now looks the way Cameron always hoped and it's a spectacular version. If you're sitting in a room obsessing over film grain, you probably need a new hobby. ;-)
This poor soul hasn't even tasted the poo sandwhich. WOW! I can't spend a few dollars to see what a poo sandwhich tastes like? I ate the poo sandwhich myself. Bottom line, Poo tastes FANTASTIC! Lots of little nuts and chewey bits. 90% not even runny! Colour is great too, nice and brown. FYI i'm a chef and have made a lof of sandwhiches. Baguette. Normal. Ciabatta. All the formats. I know a few things about sandwhiches. The most outstanding aspect is the bread... ... IF you are sitting in a room obsessing over sandwhich smell, you probably need a new hobby! ;) -you.
@@mikerude5073 There are indeed a few shots where I would have pulled back on the AI NR process, but for most of the film, the level of additional detail extraction easily eclipses this and the presentation is still superior. This release has overwhelmingly positive reviews for the IQ, but as usual there's a small group of "fans" who would have crapped on this release no matter what. The proof? Here we are listening to clueless egg sack review something he hasn't seen. Oh boy. He's agreeing with a negative review rather than a majority of positive reviews. Oh boy again. He must be a Trump supporter! LOL!
I just watched it, it's fine (and for the most part actually well considered) despite the internet of perpetually outraged (for more shameless content most of the time). There's still grain in it where it's also the best looking copy/transfer we've seen, the upscaling to 4k was necessary considering the age and time the film was made......If you're concerned, just keep your Blu......or your DVD/VHS with the weird pink colour-cast (which was IN the original film negs). This is not nearly as close to the George Lucas and his never-ending 'special editions' narrative that the perpetually outraged are claiming (for clicks?)
Your loss. The Aliens disc looks fantastic. And yes, I'm someone who cares very much about, and am very sensitive to, how transfers look on home releases.
People are never happy, it is well worth the watch in my opinion. Same as the abyss, i dont mean that the transfers look the same by saying this by any means, BUT those will wipe the floor with previous remasters all day. Also another plus is, if you wait a few months you can probably buy it for 10 bucks if reviews keep adding up or down by the looks of it.
@@frankrourke475 James Cameron with the Terminator 2 30th anniversary 4k remaster. Too much DNR and the color grading has been changed to the mighty Teal and Orange that was an horrible trend in the late 2000s and 2010s. It doesn't feel like a 90's movie anymore. There were some other change but these are the most notable and are horrible, imho.
