Why I Choose Slow Living Over Hustle Culture As A Gen Z

A video about why I converted to a slow living lifestyle and rejected hustle culture as a Gen Z.
And how I've been able to find a better balance through minimalism and living simply.
There is no doubt there are many things to celebrate as a generation Z. Technology has helped us to feel more connected and enabled us to combat many everyday hinderances.
However, like with any advancement things get lost in the mix and I've come to find the constant emphasis on speed and efficiency being one of them.
I fell very victim of this and engaged in the lure of the rat race that to get something done quickly was a true indicator of how "successful" it was or I could be deemed as a person.
But I soon came to find I was operating at an unsustainable speed that caused me to feel overwhelmed, burned out and unhappy.
I wanted to find a better balance and enjoy the little things which is where slow living and minimalism came into my life. Since living simply, I have found a better balance and been able to enjoy a life that's more suited to me. I realised speed and time are not true indicators of how efficient something is and that I am operating on my own timeline.
I hope this video is a little helpful for you if you're struggling to find balance or get lost in the midst of the speed of hustle culture.

I used to work at a publisher and I can tell you that every manuscript had to be a book/journal yesterday. So I was always in a hurry and working like a fool, also always taking work home. My workdays used to be around 18 hours a day so I hardly slept. All of this made me sick and I collapsed completely. Since 2005 I haven’t worked a day anymore and even now I still have problems with pressure and productivity. I try to live as slow and simple as possible and I finally learned to listen to myself.

Thank you for sharing this. Unfortunately I don't think that sort of thing is a rarity in this day in age, which is saddening as I feel it causes us to miss out on the little things that make life so rich and meaningful! Even when one target is reached another will soon replace it. I'm glad to hear you feel you have a better balance though now ☺ Wishing you all the best! ✨

We are influenced by others so much, whether we admit it ( or conscious of it) or not, and the degree of social conditioning is measurable by the level of exposure. The answer is less exposure. Easier said than done with all the dopamine levels are off the gauge, and intolerance to uncertainty levels, sky rocketing. The only way ( if you want it that much) is behaviour/lifestyle change, but there is always a 'yes- but'.
@lagomholly
@lagomholly 5 месяцев назад
I strongly agree with this and that it's easier said than done, particularly given the influence and make up of today's society! But I do also agree it takes discipline and a conscious decision to want to step away from it, and although this can be hard the rewards on the other side make it all worth while from my experience 😊 Thank you for your thoughts! ✨

There's a proverb "haste makes waste" that corroborates what you're expressing. Sometimes being too quick to act can be counterproductive, and patience can lead to better results. Even Simon and Garfunkel sing 'Slow down, you move too fast. You’ve got to make the morning last. Just kicking down the cobble stones. Looking for fun and feelin’ groovy.' I'm lucky to have experienced life before mobile phones and public internet. There is a stark difference! Life was simpler and more connected back then. And common sense was more... common, lol
@lagomholly
@lagomholly 5 месяцев назад
Thank you for sharing this, that proverb is very fitting! I do sometimes wish I could go back in time and experience life without all the technology I've been brought up with, just to see how connections, relationships and society as a whole differed. Like with everything though there were many difficulties back then too and you loose and gain with any progress that's made!
@letterbox203

@@lagomhollyvery good point. Actually, technology is a beautiful thing! We just let it get ahead of us and let it out of control. It is a new technology and so we don’t know how to regulate it properly. As with everything else, great things must be handled with great responsibility, or else we will wipe ourselves out of existence! Oh btw, you can see life before internet by watching Little House on the Prairie, Leave It To Beaver, and The Brady Bunch.

Beautiful video, Holly! Well, it's just Superman culture, you know. lol ... But I feel I've never been affected by peer pressure much. Most of my peers are probably already married and have kids, but that's fine with me. I know what I'm doing and what I want in this aspect. I wish I knew what I'm doing in other aspects of my life though. lol ... Retiring? If so, maybe after 50 years! Have a wonderful day! Greetings to the UK, and to Timmy as well!

My coworker grew a Timmy at work using one of those eco environment that included violet, blue, and white led lights, water monitor, and light control. It produced an astonishingly large amount of cherry tomatoes over a good period of time. I would say I picked and ate about 5 a day once it started producing. The key is to prune it regularly. Also, sometime a little growth food helps it a lot :)

Patience is a virtue and nothing that is quickly/ easily attained holds much value or satisfaction. It's just like a fine wine; the ones that are desired the most and produce the most exquisite taste have taken a very long time to get to that stage. It can be difficult to not compare ourselves to others especially when we feel behind in life, but we must remember that we're all individuals on our own unique path in life. 🌌 Your plants are looking good by the way and you're looking rather glowing in this video! 😊 Must be all that healthy eating you do. How's Timmy doing? I'm surprised you didn't call him Tommy the tomato plant 😆 Another great video, they give off such a calming vibe.

There's so much to be said. Our business culture certainly encourages and praises the runaway success concept. This idea of constant growth. The faster-the better. But, in reality is that really how things happen? How many people do things so quickly, that they never take the time to learn anything at all? Hustle culture might make someone so focused that they don't realize they're completely veering off track and not making proper progress. Not to say that quickness and a sense of urgency doesn't have its place, I think it does when you already are good at the skill you have. But, when you're learning a skill you're not good at, I agree with you that going slow, super slow, snail-paced slow, is the way to go. You cannot run, before you walk, or actually, before you crawl. An intense humility is needed to see yourself as student of your intended skill. It's very hard, because we might feel tempted to skip steps and just run out to do big things, but the process of growing is slow. I can't say exactly if there's one formula for everyone, but I can say that it's hard. I hope we can all "figure it out" someday, whatever we're meant to be. Great thoughts, Holly.
@lagomholly
@lagomholly 5 месяцев назад
Thank you for sharing these thoughts, I really enjoyed reading this! It resonated a lot with the book "Ego Is The Enemy" by Ryan Holiday which I'm not sure if you've read but he shares the idea of always being a student. I think this is very true and an approach I have since adopted to aspire to keep learning, growing and evolving all of which can only be done by moving slowly and with patience at the forefront. I agree though there will be moments where 'fast' is more applicable but when it comes longevity and seeing actual progress, slow will always triumph from my experience. I appreciate your wisdom within these comments! 😊

The song in the intro feels like magic to me, it's so beautiful. I started gardening recently and it is such a calming and relaxing activity. Your video proves that no matter the age, everyone craves more peaceful and less chaotic environments. I let society pressure me to do things I didn't enjoy and after many experiences lacking meaning, I decided to take back the control of my life and do more of what brings me joy. I enjoy watching your video and I'm looking forward to seeing more.

I totally agree, I think the craving for simplicity applies to all ages and comes at different stages of people's lives. It's of course subjective, but I've found it to bring me so many benefits and peace and its so nice to connect with like minded people like yourself who feel the same ☺ Thank you for watching! 🫶

One side of it as you said is the lack of patience and rushing. Another aspect is the culture of cramming as much as possible in one’s life, being productive all the time, having a job and 2 side hustle. Just, why?

Well said Holly :-) this is why I love your videos, they are calming and peaceful to watch, not rushed, just going at your own pace, they remind me to slow down. I worked in IT Support for over a decade, and sometimes I would get in trouble with managers for slowing down to help people properly and with care, instead of churning through customers quickly for "numbers" and making my stats look good. I just didn't believe in compromising myself in the name of getting paid. P.S. I watched a couple of your older videos about going through difficult times, and you seemed quite sad, my heart sank. On the other side of that, it's amazing to see how far you've come and it makes me happy that you're alright :-)

When we finally get to the end of our road or destination we realize it was the joy of going through everything to get there that made it all worthwhile…all the memories we collected and smile’s we gave along the way is what creates our own heaven….I remember a time when it was normal to just stop by a friends house to just hang out together there was no texting or setting up a appointment to just stop by and say hello and it wasn’t even that long ago…. I loved every second of this video Holly but my favorite part that I’ll always remember is when you said your plant Timmy …only you would know how to take a regular tomato plant and make it feel like the most special plant in the world by giving the little guy a name …Holly everything and everyone your magic touch’s becomes beautiful and full of joy ✨✨
