Why I chose the Canon EOS 1V when switching from Nikon

I used to shoot 35mm film on a Nikon F100 until October 2020, when I switched to Canon and purchased a Canon EOS 1V. In this video I break down why I made that move, what I regret/miss, and why the EOS 1V was the ideal camera to meet my needs.

Changing focus points in the EOS 1V is super easy with some custom functions. I have 3 1V’s and I have them so that simply spinning the control dial changes my points in a circle and the memory button on the back grabs the centre point. With this set up it’s faster than any other camera I’ve used.

I've settled on the same setup, if I understand you correctly. It isn't quite what I like but it really is faster than the default!

Glad you liked it! I've been using a 24-105 f/4 II, 35 f/1.4 II, and 85 f/1.4 IS lately. It's what I use for digital for work anyway so it's nice to be able to use such high-end glass on film! A very different experience from something like a tiny Olympus mechanical SLR.

Honestly, I wish Canon, or Nikon would come out with a Modern day film camera. Hell, it would be the best of both worlds.. amazing metering and focus capability and the ability to shoot any film. I'd ditch all my digital gear forever.

Both of their flagships pretty-much represented the pinnacle of the technology full-stop - they both got to peak, essentially. The main advantages we all think of, when thinking digital (& now mirrorless) - are advantages which are made possible only by digital sensor-based cameras. So - film reached its zenith already - & you can buy your way into it quite easily now, thankfully.

P.s. It's also like wishing BMW & Mercedes would go back to their heydays - we've had them, it'll never happen again, & their best cars ever were made around 2000.
@Superbustr

@@ArifGhostwriter I would prefer if Canon and Nikon stopped making new camera bodies and instead were to make a base camera body then you swap out the sensors. Every sensor could be a film stock in a sense. Every sensor today has a base ISO so you could have a sensor with a 50 speed base iso, 400 speed base iso, 800 speed base iso, and 6400 base iso. Then you could have specialist sensors such as a monochrome only sensor, a full spectrum sensor with the filters removed and maybe an infrared sensor. But alas camera makers will never do that so you should on film.

Grab a BP-E1 which is a lightweight grip that takes 4xAA's. It's great if you don't fancy lugging around a PB-E2 Power drive booster. I've got all three of the power options for all of the 1N's, 1V's and 3's in my collection and it's nice to have the option if I feel like going lightweight for any reason. Though the PB-E2 is my usual go-to setup. :)

They don't - I owned an E lens and tried out a TS-E lens and there was no aperture control at all. I've never held the 1N but the 1V feels very like an F5.

@@Shaka1277 Thanks for trouble shooting. I changed the Fn. 5 from 0 to 3 and that seems to have fixed the problem. Fortunately, all the manuals and Function cheat sheet came with it. Hi, I photograph wild horses with my F6 and I do agree with you about the E (electronic aperture) lenses. This is a nightmare. I am buying a 1VHS with an L series 100-400 lens. I do think comparing the 1V flagship to the F100 Nikon is not a fair comparison. The F6, which I also own, is a better and more fair comparison to the 1V.
@Shaka1277
@Shaka1277 2 года назад
The 100-400 is a very nice lens. I'm genuinely considering it to pair with my 300 f/2.8 for some types of work, but I want to invest in a teleconverter first. Fair points on the F6. My friend has one and it definitely is the counterpart to the 1V. I only compared them because they're what I had on each "side", and the F100 has a couple of advantages of its own. I'm still salty about the lack of a dpad on the 1V.

Adjusted for inflation the 1V would $3300.00 in 2023 dollars and you can get the camera in a used or like new state for anywhere from $500 to $1000. You're paying less than 30% of the original price of the camera and you call that expensive for the greatest Canon Film Camera ever made... ? Crazy man.

None of the Nikon film bodies allow you to change the aperture with "E" type lenses (not series E AI-S lenses), even with the command dial. I wasn't aware of this when I bought the F100 but it's a known compatibility problem.

you know the f100 would not perform under these conditions? why? it bet, it would do the same. btw. why you compare different classes? i am thinking about a switch cause of the dam electronic aperture but your "argument" is quite...well...strange. what's really great is the option to let the leader stick out...lovely. but to be honest...i just use 2 F100...not that expensive, isn't it?
@vintageaudio7518
@vintageaudio7518 Год назад
Nikon F100 has better balance fill flash/ambient metering than the 1V. The The AA battery is less expensive but weigh more than lithium. I prefer more expensive CR2 over AA battery for the weight saving. The 1V-HS has a grip that takes AA batteries. You should have compared the Nikon 300mm f2.8 vs Canon 300mm f2.8 for a fair analysis. Your decision is based on your priority to use the same lens between the Z7 and the 1V bodies, nothing do with the inadequacies of the F100.
@Superbustr
@Superbustr 10 месяцев назад
The choice between the F100 and 1V solely comes down to what lenses you want to use. If you want to use old lenses from the late 70s up to the year 2000 you go for Nikon. If you want to use more modern lenses released from 1990 up to 2018 then you choose the 1V. And there's a big difference between a 2018 release date EF lens and an 80s / 90s Nikon AF-D autofocus lens.

Prices of used 1V have shot up dramatically. I bought one that was in mint condition but failed with the dreaded BC error mirror locked up. I had an 1N with the same errors. I sent both the 1N and 1V to a camera repair shop on the east coast. They were able to repair the 1N but the 1V was a loss. I also have an EOS 1 that works beautifully until it doesn't. Should a 1V come up for sale that I think is reasonably priced for me I'll buy it. Until then I have two EOS 1N, an EOS 1, Nikon FM2n and a Canon Sure Shot Supreme as well as a Fujifilm GW690 II medium format. I'm good.
