Joe bought a Canon EOS 3 back in 2017. He was really excited about it, but it honestly has only been kinda useful in his camera bag. So, as he weighs selling it, he made a review of using this camera. It really is pretty awesome, but just isn't for everyone.

I think this is the best film camera Canon ever made. I've owned it twice, and still would, if I wasn't fully vested into Nikon glass. Eye focusing worked flawlessly for me. Too bad that technology disappeared.

Joe for your info on my Eos 3 I use a [4] AA's pack. You dont need the other battery. Everything runs on the 4 AA's. I use rechargeable batteries. Last a while. But the batteries are rechargeable. Love this camera.

Yea. I've heard a few folks use those (in the extra grip, right)? I don't think I'm going to be keeping my 3, but I'm thinking about getting a grip for the camera I'm replacing it with for just that reason.

I purchased the EOS3 back in 2005 just before I switched over to digital. I had so much high expectations for this camera, but just like you I became dissapointed. Perviously I owned a Canon Elan II and absolutely loved that camera. The EOS3 was supposed to be the semi-pro model of Canon AF film cameras just below the PRO EOS 1v. One of my first serious assignments with this camera was at a local wedding. I figured with 43 focusing points I could not go wrong, but boy did I ! I could not beleive how many shots I missed ? The next day I took the camera and tried taking pictures of a wall in brght sunlight and the camera had all kind of problems trying to focus ? Another one of my MUCH cheaper cameras with less focusing points had no problems at all. Another serious assignment was at a family funeral. The shutter button was so LOUD on the EOS3 that they almost kicked me out of the funeral. I had to stop taking pictures or take pictures from a distance. After a couple of years I decided to purchase the Canon Elan 7e which I heard was much quieter and hopefully did not have the focusing issues not to mention it was much cheaper ! The EOS3 is still sitting in my closet, but after watching this video maybe somebody out there might be happier with this camera than I am ? By the way Ditto on the batteries...
@JTobiason

Yea. That is exactly why I've moved to the ELAN 7e too. I have had absolutely no issues with that camera and am so much happier with it (and probably should make a video...).

Very informative video, thank you Joe. Would you mind telling me which of those other consumer models do just about the same thing but cost considerably less than the EOS 3 ? I'm contemplating buying an EOS 3 but your input there might be a game changer, thank you.
@JTobiason
@JTobiason 3 года назад
The EOS 3 costs what it costs because of it's features. As you go down in price, you'll lose some features. It's just a question of what matters to you. Something like an Elan 7 will have fewer focusing points and run about half the price. Or you could spend about $10 on a Rebel. But that'll be a pretty basic camera (no double exposure, just 1 or 3 focusing points). It's all just a question of what matters to you (though honestly, that Rebel is great and that is a lot of extra money to spend on film).

I used this camera some 15 years ago and loved it. Never had problems with the eye focus or the batteries dying too fast. I did stop shooting film tho because when I moved to germany I took the films to a lab to get them developed and they always messed it up. The blacks and whites in Black and White film were always blown out and colour film was always far too dark and too contrasty. unfortunately where I live there arnt many Labs left that offer that developing service.
@JTobiason
@JTobiason 2 года назад
I'm sorry for your experience. That is a bummer to have such poor experience with the lab. Hopefully you have the negatives because those can always be rescanned if you have important memories you want to bring back.

How is using manual lenses on this camera? Does it have good tools in the viewfinder to check if things are in focus?
@JTobiason
@JTobiason Год назад
It's OK but not great. Manual lenses with this age of cameras can be a little tricky because they expect to have AF. So, they lack the little tricks that really help (like focusing diopters) that were in 70s/80s era SLRs. But, as long as you aren't trying to focus at night or a crazy fast lens, it isn't that bad.

I had eos 300, Eos Elan IIE, Elan 7 (my most pro film eos) and eos 650( which is their first eos, and looks kinda cool), and as long as you are ok with few autofocus points, 30-50 bucks for eos will be enough to make great results, as long as you use good glass (and film), because the EF mount is the biggest advantage of those cameras. Autofocus with native and sigma glass worked on all of them.

I shoot Nikons however, own an Canon EOS 3. I prefer the Canon EOS 1n. I always saw the whole Eye Control Focus thing as more of a fad, than being truly useful. For people who "love" photography (as opposed to professional photographers), I never understood selling a prosumer (and certainly not a lower) grade film camera. I either keep and use them (even if occasionally) or I display them. For the $50 or $100 that I could sell them for, it's worth more to me as a 'conversation piece'.

I just bought a eos 1v. I have had an eos 1n and eos 1. I think the eos 1 does 95% of what the eos 3 does and it feels better made. I have always wavered with these eos professional cameras and nikon. I Have used a ton of nikon pro grade film slr cameras. The F2 is the best camera ever made in my opinion. I loved the nikon F5 but the camera bit the dust after about 20 years of me really abusing it. The reason I chose a 1v over the f5 was the form factor. yes I could have purchased an f6 but they are soooo much more. I also could have purchased a nikon f100 but it feels cheeper (I have owned one of these too) I kinda hate the funky battery. but thats why I am searching for the AA battery grip. I use an adapter on a lot of my nikon lenses because why not? I know we are talking canon but thats my two cents. I love both brands. did I mention I shoot leica too? Great video and thanks for the share.

I"m an OG user of this camera. Not necessarily the first but it was new model when I got it. Roughly July of 1999. I do not own a fancy digital camera, only a 750D, so I cannot speak to Canon's better, modern AF systems. Me personally, I love the eye autofocus and miss it every time I pick up the 750. I'm sure it depends on what you are shooting however. I think I would shut it off for portrait photography but I don't do that style so I wouldn't know for certain. This camera's reason for being is mostly the 45 point eye controlled AF. This where Canon debuted the tech. Bottomline, I spent $2000 on the body in 1999. I felt it was worth it then. For $200-300, if you don't have a film camera and want one with great build and good specs, it's not a bad choice. I never had a single battery issue. Sorry Joe, but I think it's the user in this case. ;) I also cannot speak about newer glass on the body. I just dusted the body off today and noticed I'm missing the eye piece (?) and am wondering where my bottom grip got off to. Lost in a transcontinental move I suspect. 🤔

If you do not use the camera for a long time then one of the electrolytic capacitors is damaged. This is also often the cause of the shutter hanging up. Replacement is a cost of a few dollars and the camera will already be working without complaints.

If you use a heavy and stabilized lens the camera needs more power to make it work, so the battery will drain much faster than with a light and not stabilized prime lens.. With the battery grip you can use rechargeable AA batteries, which will save you a lot of money if you use the camera often.
@JTobiason
@JTobiason 2 года назад
Ah! I'd never thought about how a stabilized lens uses more power (I don't own any). That makes total sense.

@@JTobiason Ok, you just mentioned you were using the 50 mm 1.2 lens, which I very much like. But on the EOS 3 it seems very often to hunt for focus, and as it is a very heavy glass it might also drain the battery a bit more than other lenses. On the EOS 3 I mostly use the 50 mm 1.4, which is much lighter, and on film I cannot see any difference (on my digital camera well). Anyhow, good luck with your Leica! No autofocus problems there ;-)
