Why I chose the OMD EM5 MKii over the Sony A6000

Hello Harry, great video. I'm also a m43 user and have a gx8 and g80 and I bought my wife an e-m10. I love or better say loved my gx8 until I got the Olympus 40-150mm pro. Now my favorite camera is no longer bearable to me because the ibis is not good enough for that lens. So I use the g80 for that lens because I can easily hand hold shots down 1/20 and slower if I'm very careful. But it's not a camera I like lugging around. Just not my style, I prefer the rangefinder style of the gx8 as it's a good looking camera and feels premium. Anyways I'm thinking of possibly getting an e-m5 Mark ii as my carry around camera and main camera for stills to possibly replace my gx8. I know it's not a rangefinder body but I like the retro look of om-d bodies. What do you think about going from gx8 to em5 mark ii for a carry around stills camera. I don't care about 4k in this case because I'll still use my g80 for 4k video as that's my workhorse for video. I know my way around the Olympus menu system because I occasionally use my wife's em10 so that's not an issue and i love it's styling. I would love if the gx8 would have the ibis from the g80 and I'd be happy. I know that the gx9 will fix this issue for me but I don't feel like waiting another year or 2. I also want to mention that before the Oly 40-150 pro I had the panny 35-100 f/2.8 but I wasnt satisfied with it. I bought the Olympus pro to test out and see which one I liked better and chose the Olympus. I know the Panasonic model would fix the stabilization issue of the gx8 but I just wasn't crazy about that lens. I'd like to hear your perspective since you're familiar with both. Thanks bro.

I have owned/used on a pro basis, A6000, A7, and omd em5, plus various Nikons and Canons. The system I seem to use most is now M43, in particular the EM5 and Panasonic G7. The AF is quicker, and JPEG files straight out of camera are great for the kind of event photography that contributes quite a lot of my work. There's a lot of sensor snobbery about, but in a blind test I conducted a while back Joe client couldn't tell the difference between prints created from full frame or M43. A pixel peeping nerd would obviously be able to tell if they had access to the original raw files, but off a print it's MUCH harder. And, as YOU say in your video, nobody has ever complained about the use of the smaller sensor.

the micro 4/3 is great for bird shoot the lens double like the 400mm is 800mm. The lenses more chooses. I have the a6000 with 55mm 210mm it doesnot have the image quality.

How do you rate the video quality on this camera? I mostly shoot stills but I do need good video (but not 4k)... I hate the lack of a fully articulating screen on the A6000, 6300 is too exp, and Panny G7 seems to have meh stills quality.

You don't get any advantage with shutter speed of 1/8000 over Sony's 1/4000 as your lowest ISO is 200 and Sony's is 100. So if you shoot at f1.8 / ISO 200 / 1/8000 on EM5 mkII it will give you same exposure as A6000 at f1.8 / ISO 100 / 1/4000

why does the EM5mkii produce so much noise and grain even at base iso

Considering a no 2 camera to my DSLRs, I gave up the A6000 a while ago, as I couldn't find desent lenses for it. The few good ones were large and expensive. I would rather go for Olympus OM-D! Chose Canon Eos M due to the size, a bargain price and great lenses.

I seem to remember you used to use a Nikon D750? What happened or am i wrong?

What about the gx7, how does that compete to the em5 mkii

You can pretty much update the title of this video to "Why I chose the OMD EM5 MKii over the Sony A6300" because all the points are still valid, except for possibly auto focus performance.

I have the A6000 and the EM5 (not m2) - I must say the GH4/G7/GX7 and now GX8 are so much more fun to use - full Touch etc - The A6000 has a 24MP sensor and IQ is very nice - and focus speed is not bad - but no match when focusing in low light to the GX7 - So in low light even with a fast lens like the 50mm F1.8 for example it struggles - I would say that if I use the 25mm F1.4 or the 45.5mm F1.2 I get better results out of M43 GX7 vs the 35mm F1.8 or 50mm F1.8 A6000 - the M43 system has so many nice lenses like the Panasonic 35-100mm F2.8 and 12-35mm F2.8 which Sony does not have that low light performance is not an issue overall when comparing the two - yes if using the exact focal length and aperture lens - So I do not find my self pick up my A6000 to get better low light performance - it is more in where I need the higher resolution like in landscape - The A6000 is a decent camera with a good sensor but belongs to a system with no fast zooms and a lack of lenses - it has no Touch LCD or Touch Shutter - lags in low light focusing - not weather sealed - it has a good grip and a very nice high res sensor - but the EM5 MK2 offers lots more - although I would say that the EM1 has a much better grip - I have the older EM5 with the horrible Play back button :) and grip not so good - but IQ is very nice - but due to playback button and so so grip ( just don't want to make larger with an extra grip ) I do not use much - So for anyone more serous the EM5 M2 is a much better choice due to the lens selection and more options - but I think the G7 or GX8 will be of interest due to 4K and fantastic grips and button layout and full Touch LCD

i looked up the price for the OMD EM5 MKii and saw it costs as much as a sony a7! for a micro 4/3 against fullframe. everybody has different taste but i think the a7 could be considered instead of the a6000.

This video would have a bit more meaning if we knew what type of photographer you are. Professional or amateur? What do you shoot? Portraits? Weddings? Landscapes?

The very fact that he is trying to explain why he chose a camera twice as costly to the other, is a bit silly. At this price point, the only real advantage of the Olympus over full frame is size - even the lens tend to be smaller because of the crop factor.

i like the viewfinder of the olympus much and much better then a6000

A6000 is a lot cheaper than EM5 Mk II, so if you have problem with 1/4000, you just buy ND filter.

image quality on the Sony is much better including low light.

All I hear is someone trying to justify their purchase. The Sony glass is nearly dollar for dollar the same as Canon when it comes to G & Zeiss (FE). The E glass is cheaper and designed for Crop which produce great quality images. Cost can't be argued as the A6000 is cheaper and lets be honest is a lesser crop version of the A7II.

you basically just listed a bunch of things that the a6000 does better but dismissed them as advantages for the OMD a camera that is twice as expensive with a smaller sensor and lesser image quality... as for lens cost they are no more expensive than competing brands the only difference is that there are no cheap crappy sony lenses

olympus looks much better but with family of 4 and traveling it won't be easy to take a snap shot. A6000 feels and works like a point and shoot. It works for me.

Ok, so what? if it works for you fine. However, someone else cold argue in favor of the Sony system using the very same opposite arguments.

He's comparing a flagship camera to a intermediate level camera... a fair comparison would be to the a7 in terms of who it is marketed to. Compare the Om-D Em-10 to the a6000 in a more fair comparison.

The em5 mark II is much more expensive.
