So how does the Mark II series hold up in 2020? At the current prices, they still remain very competitive in the market in my opinion. I start with the E-M10 Mark II, then move on to the E-M5 Mark II and talk about all the additional benefits that camera offers over the E-M10. Then moving on to the E-M1 Mark II, and significant upgrades it brings. No matter which camera you choose, you will have one of the best on the market today.

Why hasn’t Olympus picked you up as one of their visionary’s. Your knowledge about their camera systems is phenomenal. Your teaching skills explaining how to use them helps those that don’t read manuals. I personally enjoy your videos and even as along term Olympus user do pick up the odd tip which I find useful. Keep up the good work, and during this difficult time stay safe.

@@RobTrek I agree that you aren't the "Visionary" they want and crave.... but they have Ambassadors and if you don't fit that bill, then they are pretty petty when it comes to having Ambassadors and Visionaries... In answering to Les Reed, Marcos, all of you above, I am in complete agreeance! Rob Trek should be! While watching the very first video of his I knew I was subbing; his knowledge & that unique teaching personality he has. Very engaging. I think it's funny Olympus isn't interested in the genre. This to me is an overlooked niche, actually genre, with more than enough people (active enthusiasts pro & non pro alike!) that they are truly missing out on a customer base & interest they'd do well to pay attention to. And they've got their very first & best rep looking them in the face! Lol things that make you go "hmm." And to Rob, thank you for giving us this video on all three of these models at once. Been wanting to see exactly this. Clear, informing, concise! I have the E-M1 and the older E-PM2.

I love all cameras for what they can produce in the right hands ;) But doing long hikes and all day model shoots my hands where starting to feel the pain. Hi Rob, thanks for the video. I am not a pro and nor do I take or use a camera in work life. For me photography is stickly for fun. I picked up my first Olympus, an OMD EM 10 mk 2 about 4 years after watching your tutorials. I love this little camera, it's lightweight and provides excellent picture quality which has allowed me to hang photos, that I took, on our walls in our home with my wife's blessings. And over the years I bought a few prime lens, just bought the 30mm, and I have been thinking about upgrading to the EM-5 or EM-1 mark 2 with a Pro zoom 12 - 40. I thinks it's going to be the EM-5 because of the small size and weight and I am not a pro or pixel peeper and don't plan on becoming one. This video and all of your tutorials have helped me with understanding my camera of choice (Olympus) and to become a better photographer. Thanks, I look forward to more from your channel. Neil
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 4 года назад
Thanks, Neil. I think it's great that you hang your photos. I'm sure they are a great source of pride and joy. I think the em1-ii will be a better fit for that 300mm. The grip alone is a big plus. I'm not sure, but I think the ibis works better with the 300mm too. Robin or Peter may be able to give you better feedback on that one since I don't own that lens.

I'm a professional photographer, yet I've recently purchased two E-M5 MkII's rather than the E-M1. My decision was based upon performing a MoSCoW Requirements Analysis on the various features, so that I could understand the worth of each feature to myself. MoSCoW breaks down into assigning each feature a value of: • Mo = MUST HAVE, or else I'm not buying. • S = Should Have, where I need most of the Should Have features, but (ultimately) I can accept not having all of them; just most of them. • Co = Could Have, which are nice to have non-essential features. Assign points for these, but they're only "wish list" items. • W = Won't Have, which are features I'm not willing to pay for because I don't need them; such as (in my case) any of the video capabilities. If you assign MoSCoW values to each of the camera's listed feature, your decision on what to spend your money on will be much more logical. This should include features such as ergonomics, ease-of-use (e.g. the menu system), size and weight. For example: the E-M1s are too big for my particular requirements, whereas the E-M10 and E-M5 score highly in these Must Have requirements. For you, size and weight may be only Should Have's. Never forget, even if you buy today's most advanced camera, even before you've mastered all of its features, something else will have come along to supersede it. You'll also be one of the 'early adopters' who are the Guinea pigs who endure all of the pain of early release software and waiting for bug fixes. That's why I liked the well tried and proven Olympus OM-D E-M5 MkII. One last point: once you've made your decision and laid out your money, STOP reading technical reviews and equipment comparisons. You have chosen the best equipment for your needs, now it's time to learn how to master what you have and stop thinking the grass may be greener elsewhere. Practice makes great photography. A technically perfect image of doggy doo-do is still a picture of doggy doo. A less than technically perfect, yet amazing image, will always be of greater artistic and photographic value. Rick Bear

Great comment on the MoSCoW values system! And you're so right about raising a valid point (for me; for most?) about being satisfied with what one has invested in & not continue looking at other product comparisons & if there is greener grass elsewhere. I was doing exactly this & stopped; I told myself I'd already done careful research so I would be satisfied. Which I am. These cameras are great. But i like staying abreast of the latest, like others. Now to just keep that tempered & not develop gear syndrome lol?!

@@RobTrek The book is OK, the only weak section I picked up was Partial Color - they do not really understand the three different modes. The main complaint I have is the size and organisation. It is a solid book, 514 pages and not one I would take on a trek. Information is scattered in a number of places, for instance the index for "Partial Color" lists 5 different locations - all of which need to be referenced to get the whole story. I would prefer a much smaller, but comprehensive guide printed on fine paper similar to a Michelin Guide (or a Lonely Planet) that slides into a back pocket. All the necessary information should be concise and in the one place. I guess I can only dream unless you feel like a challenge!

This was a nice practical video. I started digital ILC photography with an E-M10 Mk.1, then handled an E-M1 Mk.1 a year or so later. Jonesd for it and bought one on a Black Friday sale. I made the mistake of handling the Mk.2 version a couple of years ago and now have one of those as well. The 20MP is a nice improvement but what really floored me were the small changes - higher capacity battery, improved grip profile plus 1>2 lever and AEL/AFL button orientation changes. It's a camera that will last me a long time, probably until the E-M1 Mk.4 shows up! My 'go to' lens for site surveys and lighting assessments is the 7-14mm f2.8. It's very sharp and compact enough to throw in a small sling. BTW I'm finding your WorkSpace videos very helpful at weaning me off OV3.

@@coliningraham7762 Without weather sealing, you risk water getting into the camera during rain and damaging it. You'll also need to purchase weather sealed lenses. The em5-ii with 14-150mm is a good weather sealed kit. The E-M1-ii with the 12-40 pro also a good choice.

The focusing is not any worse than any other contrast detect only AF. The problem is really with the buffer. You only can get a few shots off before the camera crawls to a halt. If you have a Mark II camera, a fast UHS-II card will help. The EM10-ii even has a larger buffer than the E-M5-ii. You next camera should probably be the E-M1-ii. It's great to have a review of these top value bodies . I picked a slightly used Em10-II a few months ago at great price as those Em5-II where both pricier and way more used localy (not overpriced but just not as good a bargain). If i am not mistaken , the 10 has an 'af pad' missing on the 5 . The EZ 14-42mm pancake version that came with it has a bad reputation for IQ but my experience with that kind of lens is to simply leave it at F8 (aperture priority mode) at all time and wow, it delivers ! Adding a tiny 9mm fisheye 'body cap lens' for fun and a 45mm f1.8 for extra IQ and depth control makes it an impressively small, light, cheap, good and capable kit . I sometimes add a 30mm f3.5 macro, 40-150 f4-5.6 and/or a fl600r flash . Dont forget a mini (always) or full size (sometimes) tripod for live composite and other 'slow light' functions...

Works great for most wildlife. It's not so good with fast moving objects so you'll have to develop your skill at tracking by eye.

What does the lens have to do with focus stacking?
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 4 года назад
Not sure why, but stacking is limited to Pro lenses. Doesn't make sense to me either. If focus bracketing works on all lenses, isn't stacking a secondary step?

Hi Rob, they are all excellent cameras. But I do wish they were more competitive on price because Panasonic are.

No question the gx85 and g9 are top notch values and their prices have come down substantially compared to Olympus. If there was a g85 on the shelf when I went to the camera store 3+ years ago, I might be a Panasonic shooter today!

@@RobTrek Hey Rob, at $698 it is a steal, though the 12-60mm lens is a lower end kit and not the faster lens. Still a low price for the combo. The camera bodies and lenses may not have the sex appeal of Olympus, but in all fairness, the Panny style and lenses look and feel great! Some of the lenses are Japan made too. I think all the cameras seem to be made in China. As for build quality the battery door, as example, I think is more sturdy. Looks like the G85 grip is pretty good. The G9 is tops, no doubt, but larger and a larger price of $999 -- still a good mark-down though.

@@RobTrek it is a bit of a shame because there are so many things I like about Olympus cameras, I used to have the PEN years ago and with your videos I like the idea of all the configuration possible. But then value for money and form factor , I am a GX80 user, I bet I will stay with Pany.

Will boosting the dynamic range improve contrast autofocus?

No way to "boost" dynamic range. You can only try to focus on the brightest and contrasty part of the image.

Awesome views! I have an om-d e-m10 Mark ii which I bought along with the 14-42mm ez kit zoom. And the combo worked for me until recently one day a message popped out on the LCD saying "please check the status of a lens"! After fiddling with the system for about an hour I finally realised my biggest mistake! "NEVER BUY A MOTORIZED ZOOM LENS! NEVER, EVER!"
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 4 года назад
That happened to me too! It's not a big enough problem for Olympus to recall the lens, but it's the most common problem I hear with that lens.
@bdfrankmeow

@@RobTrek i always tough that the only advantage of such zooms is a smooth zoom in/out in video (set to slow) . Mine came with my slightly used Em10-II , kind of a bonus and works fine so far. I really like that it is pancake for the little room it takes in the bag when i use another lens, witch is frequent . As long as it works at the wide range i'll be happy since i always carry a 9mm 'cap', a 30mm f3.5 macro and a 45mm f1.8 in the bag with it. It also seems that the other 14-42 has its problems . In any case, it seems a little risky to rely only on a single Olympus kit zoom . At least another lens is not only a complement but also a backup.

@@RobTrek In a rangefinder style, the GX85 kit at $498 with the 12-32mm and 45.150mm lens is a great Panasonic deal. The G85 at $698 is also a great deal. Alas, in Olympus the last of the metal built in the mid to low range cameras is a last opportunity -- the Olympus E-M10 mark III makes no sense at all -- a step down as it goes plastic and takes away features. I bought the Olympus E-M10 II and the PL-8, which, at Adorama sells for the price of the lens -- you get the camera for free -- I paid slightly more however, but today I think they have white PL-8 left at a giveaway price. As for the Panasonic GX85, it is a great little street shooter and at $500 off, a super deal. The camera is made in China. Panasonic has some made in Japan lenses.
