Why I Chose the Sony RX100V over the RX100VA and RX100VI It was time to upgrade my beloved Sony RX100 Mark I to something a bit more updated. I decided not to go with the latest and greatest for many reasons. #sonyrx100 #rx100 #sonyrx
Nice review with solid rationale. FYI for those considering the V, VA, VI or earlier generations, TriState Camera now has the VA brand new for $718 which is cheaper than their price for both the V and the IV. Not sure why they're selling it for less than the V AND EVEN the IV. Didn't question it; just hit "buy now." :)
How does the low light picture quality of the V compare to the III? I have the III and am afraid it will break soon as it's been through a lot. It seems like it's taking longer to focus and turn on/off and I've had to repair a bunch of chips and scratches on it. If I do need to replace it would the V be an improvement with pictures over the III? I do mainly pictures in restaurants or around town as well as some plants/animals. I also like to do some continuous shooting of sports. Another big use is family trips to Disney.
Exactly the info what I was looking for, thank you so much!!! I agree with the other commentor as well though, it's better if there is silence in my opinion.
Excellent review! I have the Mark1 as well, and tomorrow I may get the 5A. Why, instead of just the 5? I recently bought a great Zhiyun Crane M2 stabilizer which is great for video, but none of my cameras are compatible with the Wi-Fi, and I hate the thought of controlling both (the Zhiyun and RX100 or my Lumix LX100) with an iPhone or whatever. I just want to be able to zoom in and out and take the occasional photo with the Zhiyun, but it mentions a Sony RX100VA in it's list of compatible cameras, and not the V. By the way, if you don't have a gimbal-type device and since you enjoy shooting video, I'd recommend something like the Zhiyun Crane M2, it's great! About $369 here in Toronto, but I'd seen it for $269 at B&H in the U.S.
great share buddy. glad i've watched this video of yours. I want to make some reviews like you do so i've just bought my new sony rx100 mark 5A instead of the mark 6 for the same reason. i'll be testing first it's low light capability since it has f1.8 which is really ideal for low light scenes. i've tried some photos and it delivered great result. so much for this, i've just subbed to you buddy. let's stay connected. thanks.
Yeah, the camera still produces great stills. There is still a strong demand for them in the secondary market. I've seen ones new in box recently sell for around $300! Used one seem to sell around $200. Not bad for a camera that was released in 2012.
Thanks for saving me a bunch of money. I have the Mark 1 and I am very happy with it. I may buy the Canon G7X mark3 if it is ever released.Rumors only!!
Thank you for tour great review. I thought, I Would, at first, but an RX100 mark VI but no ND filter and I prefer having more light and bokeh than zoom. I didn’t buy anything yet, the mark V is at same price (used good condition ) as the mark va (used as well) for 640 € both. The mark I at 330€. Which one should I take for discreet and hip street photo + portraits and food ? Best
So wanted to watch your review but the music is too distracting, I had to stop. Please don't add this in future videos! I just want to hear you; it adds nothing. Thanks anyway. :(
Great review! Helped me so much. I kept looking at the Mark VI for a very special trip I am taking, but the price was too scary. The info about low light and macro meant alot too. I want a great zoom, but if I can get decent zoom I'm okay. I'm an amateur so this is so helpful for me.
I was hyped about the vi and vii 200m zoom, but then watching your video I realize what function I needed the most =) I chose VA over V cuz they are similar priced. Thanks for the video =)
Good information but definitely oriented to your type of indoor, close up photography being the driving factor. For Landscape photographers the Mark vii ( or Mark Vi ) would be a more flexible choice. This assumes you are not concerned about a few hundred bucks to get what you want or prefer. The one stop aperture difference is almost a non factor with the iso range, shutter speed flexibility and sensor quality in the Mark vii or vi. Really at iso 1000 or < the noise is a non factor, unless you are focused only on macro photography. Also 3cm difference in focal distance (1.18”) is mute when you have a zoom. While I appreciate you discussing value Inam more interested in performance and what differences exist between the cameras. Anyone considering video or stacked HDR the Mark vii is a generation forward from the Mark V ( I own a Mark IV ) and worthy of the price difference IMO.
Even now for me there's a big reason to go with the mark V, subsequent version do not support the Playmemories apps, I own several of them and love them, very very underrated and usefull function,, smooth water without an ND filter, the Digital filter is brilliant (if a little complicated) the timelapse is awesome and actually gives the "Holy Grail" adjustments for smooth exposure ramping
You couldn't have put it better how good the rx100v is and how and what you use it for, the mark 6 is good for a further distance if your doing land scape and birds, can you justify buying 2 cameras for two different types of photography, both very portable and usable cameras on the market today. not a bad idea if you think about it, what a good and interesting veiw on why and what camera.
I may have ordered the wrong version - I have ordered the va but I want to do timelapses, how can I do timelapses with the va ? My understanding was the V did it through the play memories app but how would I so it with the va and what external equipment would be required ( which intervalometer would be supported ?) Tia.
Picked up a mark V for 425, replaces my gx8 with 20mm 1.7 quite nicely and includes a useful bounce flash. image/quality and stabilization seem to be on par and it is much more pocketable and has better af and more focal length options to boot. The only downside is no flippy screen and the viewfinder is nowhere near as nice and doesn't tilt up
$425 is a great price for that camera. I don't use the viewfinder much. The flippy screen does flip up for selfies for and angled shots. What do you mean by no flippy screen?
@@Kinsiderations only that it doesn't flip out to the side which helps with low angle portrait shots. but all in all, the pocketability is the most important factor for me.
hello feller chicagoan! help! im looking for my first RX100... i've watched several reviews already... first Im considering mark III but when I saw that mark V has phase detection I was like whoa! currently I have A6000 and HX90V. during my Italy trip, I was using more my HX90v... I guess i like the pocketability... so III vs V? i'm not much of a video person... what say you? O:-)
Hello, I would go with the Mark V for all purpose shooting (non moving subjects and moving subjects), it would probably help you nail focus better, especially with travel photography. If you just take portrait type pictures, or food photographs, then the Mark III would suffice!
Is the Sony rx100 v that great? I’m asking because I’ve never owned a camera before.....I’ve been surfing off my phone camera. I feel smart phone has come a lot my way and Now with pixel 3 almost out should I just opt for that? Anyways I just don’t want to spend 1000 for a tiny bit better image taking
If you post pictures mostly online like on Instagram and Facebook, then a camera phone will be fine. If you're into photo editing, taking pictures in low light, and want manual control, a camera like this will produce better results and at a much higher resolution.
bob johnson if you don’t know if it is worth it for you, it is probably not. Buy used mark 1 for 150dollars or buy smaller sensor with longer range (like 24-720 or 25-500) for even much less, i believe you can get it for 50 dollars. Or even buy both:)
I have bth RX100-i and RX100-V and I do not see any difference in picture quality. I'd like you to compare Mark V with new Mark VII, because I like your reviews
Low light performance will be different when zooming in... though the original RX100 has F1.8, it quickly rolls off the moment you zoom at max aperture 1.8-4.9. M5 has 1.8-2.8, considerable difference.
Probably. Read the description and pixel peep the pictures in the second hand market. Still an amazing camera. I was out yesterday doing some street photography with it.
Kinsiderations would I be missing out on much with the VA which doesn’t have in camera play memories apps? How would one do time lapse without ply memories apps in the VA?
I'm learning to do more video work. The MarkV has slo-mo, 4K, and and flip screen for vlogging. The Mark 1 can still old it's own in terms of picture quality.
@@Kinsiderations It's that f1.8 vs. f2.8 that is a deal breaker. The 200mm lens on zoom is nice, but that's not really in the realm of what this camera excels at - Street Photography! And that difference in aperture is worth it!
Thank very much for your comparison , can you please tell me if the new RX100 VA can still support PlayMemories App , I now that the RX100VI does not support it any more... Maybe that´s another reason for not taking it. I bought some of this Apps , like timelapse , Nd Filter and I would like to continue using them. Thanks in advance. There is another difference between the RX100 V and the RX100 VI in the viewfinder when you use it ,come to its position automatically and the RX100 V you have to do it manually. Do you know how is it in the RX100 VA? Thanks Again
Both Sony RX100 V and VA are selling the same price at B&H Photo and Adorama. Mark V may give your more free items than the VA. If they are about the same price why buy Mark V?
I got a RX100V used, like new, for around $750 with 3 batteries, and external charger. With the money saved, I purchased a stabilizer for it, and saved some cash for another camera lens. Loving the MarkV and very happy with the quality. If I had the money in my budget to purchase new and the MarkV and MarkVA are same price, then yes, MarkVA would be the logical choice. The thing is, the second hand market has lots of MarkV's ranging around $700 and I don't think the MarkVA's upgrades are that substantial. That's one of the reasons I went used and saved some money.

I am watching this a year later, and this might seem like a strange comment since I am mostly a Sony shooter, but your description of your photographic needs suggests to me that you would be most suited to the Panasonic LX100 II. The Panny is far better than the RX100 for macro, and is better in low light as it has a larger sensor. It has a sensationally good f1.7-2.8 24-75mm lens. TheSony shines with SloMo and the flippy screen. I am currently looking at adding a compact to my GoPro kit to add zoom capability and was looking at the RX100 VA because of the lens. In the end, however, I have decided to get two cameras - the RX100 VII for SloMo and extra reach, and the LX100 II for fast aperture, low light, and macro. All of them work well on the little Feiyu Tech G6 Plus gimbal and when I upgrade to the new GoPro Hero 8 I will have a perfect small video package. I have been on Hero 4 for years, and looking at how good small cameras are getting decided to replace a couple of my larger cameras with a more complete small camera package. There was a time when compacts were crap for amateurs, but times have changed and both the RX100 series and LX series are pocket powerhouses with amazing capabilities, and of course GoPro continues to become a more and more capable mainstream camera.
Very poor explanations in this video. You don't state why the VI and up have a higher aperture, it's because they are different lenses and extend to 200mm. It would be impossible to keep a 1.8 aperture on a lens that small for that focal range. Also for macro, the further away you are from the subject the less light you'll be blocking. - macro shooters want distance from their subjects, especially bugs which wont stick around the closer you get. The macro shot from the Mk1 looks like a potato took it compared to the Mk5.
