I must admit, as someone who does photo AND video, I still prefer the mk5, I mostly shoot between 35 and 85mm, so the 24-70 is enough for me, and for video the built in ND filter is absolute king. On top of that: f/1.8 is over one stop brighter than f/2.8! People spend insane amounts of money on prime lenses for an increase from 2.8 to 1.8 and here you get it by actually spending less? In my opinion a no-brainer. Of course, if you need the 200mm reach and better autofocus, the mk7 is the way to go, but in my experience you don't need a9 levels of autofocus performance to get good results. Just my two cents...

If the RX100vii had an f1.8 lens & a built in ND filter, it would be the greatest point & shoot travel vlogging camera. Or i hope Sony releases an update to the VA with an ext mic jack & touch screen.

I'm a street photography. I had RX100 MARK VA and MARK VII. Both are good!

I picked up a RX100VA for $849 on a black Friday sale. I hardly do video, if any, so the faster glass and ND filter worked better for me. I stepped up from the RX100 Mark 2 so I'm happy.

Henry Wojtkiewicz I bought it a week ago, but I am a bit disappointed. I compare it with the Panasonic lumix zs200 which I thought did not have good contrast, and it is much worse. Depth of field is not crispy at all. What is more, I bought it because of the f1.8 lens which I thought that it would perform great under low light conditions, especially night shots. But again, no. The main problem is that night shots are not crisp and are a bit blurred.

I would get the RX100VA because for most photography a 24-70mm are more than enough and you get a much brighter Lens !

I’m not sure if that camera has Clearview in the zoom, but the RX100 has it and actually exceeds the zoom range of the mk7.

Today in 2023 the VA is about half the price of the VII. Makes the VA a tempting choice.

Nice comparison review! I love how you mentioned the smartphone comment towards the end! Smartphone’s cameras are NOWHERE CLOSE to these point and shoot cameras! Sony is pretty smart with the pricing by only giving you a difference of $200! If the RX100 Mark Va is lowered to $800, people will consider the Mark Va not only of the price, but by the aperture speed!

If you have a mirrorless camera, with something like a 10-20 f2.8 you should get the RX100M7. I watched this video. Bought the RX100M5 hated how far away a hawk that I wanted a picture of was. Noticed that the ND Filter does not make a huge difference. Realized if I want faster glass, I should just carry my A6400 with a f2.8 lens in my backpack and pull it out when wanted. (For my work I only need faster glass with closer subjects.) Am now returning my RX100M5 and getting an RX100M7. M7 is the way to go for me. Maybe for you too if you have a mirrorless or full frame with a wide angle lens.

Does the vii have better stabilization than the va? Because on the va I could not get below 1/15s consistently without frequent blurring.

Thanks for these reviews. I watched your RX100 and RX10 reviews about a year and half ago when our child was on the way. Ended up with a RX100 M1 for $140 and RX10 M3 for $800. I really would like to have a newer RX100 as the video quality isn't on par with the RX10 at only 1080p. When will these cameras go 4k 60fps?

The price of the RX100 VA has dropped in the UK and can be had for £699 after £100 cash back from Sony, the VII is £1200. So that makes the VA very tempting.

I read somewhere that the v had a stacked sensor and the va does not . I’m looking at getting a designated pocket camera for the days I don’t feel like having my a7iv on me . I’ve owned the Ricoh gr iii and the x100v . Hoping that the 1 inch sensor will cut it for casual pictures and street photography . It’s the size and the fast lens that attracts me to the camera .

There were a few key features on the vii that you missed. One major feature was vast improvements in autofocus and tracking. The camera may be the best available at quickly focusing and keeping focus on moving people, pets or objects including eyes. Another biggie on the vii is they finally put stabilization on 4k video eliminating the need for a gimbal. And something you may not have thought of, using at 200mm, you can actually get some awesome shallow depth of field shots and video with better blurry background than the VA. Also the vii eliminate the rolling shutter effect and screen blackout. The VA still has many situation it is still better for with the faster lens, as you pointed out. The good news in the viii coming soon, both lens options will be available. But in the meantime, there are very compelling reasons to get the vii especially for any vlogger or parents wanting to shoot their kids sporting event.

Hi, great video. I heard that you take the RX100 for scuba diving. That’s exactly the primary reason I’m planning to buy one. My concerns with the VII (besides housing considerations because of the ports) is that the VA seams to be better in low light conditions (which is a matter to considerate underwater) and has the ND filter the VII does not carry. On the other hand the pros of the VII (for underwater use) seem to be the improved autofocus and the stabilization. Which would be your suggestion if the scope is exclusively for use underwater. I would greatly appreciate your advise. Best,

You underestimate the smartphone. It's taken out mp3 players, heck it's changed the media industry. It's currently taking out action cameras, and Sony's addition of 200mm is a direct response to the fear of smartphones. Good comparison, just what I was looking for. Currently looking at the vii specifically for the zoom.

Give it a couple/few months and maybe we'll get the RXVIIA. The internals of the VII (with mic jack) with the optics (plus ND) of the VA. I think if you check some video, the VII will have superior quality over the VA. The new sensor and processor will give better quality.

@@LostStylus This is why having both the ZV1 and the VII is helpful. Sometimes the extra zoom is useful, and the VII is also better for slow motion due to double the recording times. But then I do like that f1.8 and the Product Showcase mode. I love them both.

Sorry but you neglected to mention the fact that, at its widest aperture setting at the wide end of the zoom, the RX100 VA can open up to a whopping f1.8 which in turn can, when close to the subject, create a BEAUTIFUL soft background bokeh effect - far better than the VII - which ended up being the deal breaker for me. It is obvious you aren't a truly sensitive photographer or you would have mentioned this incredibly important fact.

@zantigar
@zantigar 4 года назад
@@stevenpam You are mistaken. I watched the entire clip again, and he NEVER mentions that RX100 VA allows for shallower depth of field effects at medium to close range than the VII. You must be mistaking this for another review.
@stevenpam
@stevenpam 4 года назад
@@zantigar OK, you made me watch it again, too, now, to make sure I wasn't going mad 🤣 This is far from the worst review ever, but it sure does highlight what a good job folks like Chris and Jordan from TCSTV/DPreview do... organising their thoughts *before* they hit record, rather than just repeating themselves about a whole lot of stuff. Also, a tabletop shot of two cameras had better have something interesting and unique to say! Anyway, to the f/1.8 issue... He mentions "faster glass" quickly around 3:07, but only in the context of low light performance, not depth of field. Then again at around 4:09, 4:41, 6:27, 7:52, 6:58 and 7:52. So for some people the depth of field point may not be obvious. I agree with you that it's a significant difference between the cameras, and for many people this, along with the ND filter, makes the VA a better choice. Speaking of other reviews, Jared Polin's is much more thorough and shows the camera in use. Happy shooting 😊
@jgonzaga23
